Putting a few touches on my gear before i head to Martys to chase those Osceolas. Cant begin to describe how much we cut up and laugh and such...Got some new tricks up my sleeve this year..check them out...Cant wait to get my new strutting DSD decoy out in the swamp...this rascal is off the charts. Repainted my bow blind to match my tree skirt....My tree skirt is new. I'm getting away from anything shaggy that could blow in the breeze...just trying to fade into the tree where i lean my chair against. I took 2 pictures showing how important even the slightest bit of camo is..one you see my gloveless hand, the other you dont. Hunting them blindless, you can never overlook every detail...Sometimes I even get lucky. :) ... Nothing like turkey hunting for me always trying to reinvent my gear and approach.....good hunting everyone

that's freakin cool! you're making me wanna try this out now. i just wanna get a turkey under my belt first before doing anything radical :bigsmyl:
did you make the bow blind yourself?
Good luck awsome set up.
Joey your using the feeding hen instead of the upright one?
Joey,
OUTSTANDING SET - UP !! That strutter is :D
All the best with them Osceolas.
Now that's a decoy! Bet he gets flogged around a little by the real ones...lol.
Go get 'em Joe! I have my scratch box from you all tuned and ready for a few IL Easterns in 30 days :)

Now ya did it Joe. There goes 400.00 bucks. Now he is gonna buy the whole flock!
DBird...doesn't miss a trick.....if I have only enough room to tote only one hen, I tote the feeding hen..it's more a relax pose I have come to decide.....I love my Hardcore Gear upright hen but she got put in the coop due to the new DSD feeding hen...check out Zinks decoys also. They are 30 bucks cheaper.

No Doubt... ;)
That DSD is great, as they all are, I know a few fellows who run DSD Canada Geese great decoys. Put the foam muppets I use to shame.
So are you still using those dekes to steer the birds from where you don't want them to go or are they going up right in front of you to set up the shot?
Good luck down there, I know I don't have to tell you to have fun :D
Joey, That's too cool....I think I finally found someone who "tweeks" their gear more than me.
You inspire us all to raise the bar :clapper:
That DSD strutter is wicked!
Good luck!
I think i might get confused and shoot a decoy that looks that real. Great work on the pictures.
Good luck and have fun.
Set-up looks good. What are you wearing behind the bow blind? Is it just camo cloth drapped over or is it some kind of camo suit? I agree on the feeding hen; maybe a tom might think she's playing hard to get and come right in. Good luck!
:help:
Good luck Bud.RC
Nice. That decoy is somethin else!
Awesome set-up! Did you make the bow-blind or buy it?
Good luck.
Looking good Joey! Any self respecting turkey is going to find an arrow headed his way - don't know how they could look at that setup without strutting on in.
This reminds me to get to work. I bought one of those bow blind things last year but haven't gotten around to getting it set up on my bow. We have a little time yet here in the north, but I better get busy!
Do you have a picture of how you ended up attaching your blind to your bow?
Quite impressive and well done!!!
Should not be any surprise that you will have a great chance at success.
Best of luck!
I had talked myself out of dsd's until now. Dang!!
Do you use camo fletchings?
Y'all can keep the bow blinds but the DSD feeding hen may see some game time this season. Good luck Joey.
Hope you get an opportunity down there. Nice tree suit. I like Hogdancer's pic of it better though.
Nice setup and good luck.
Whew....getting some questions which i love...try to answer most....i'm over on the PBS site too all month talking turkey if anyone cares or wants to talk turkey.
Sharptop...i use God's camo for fletching and a Firenock so i can find my arrow.:0) i miss sometimes.....well..thats another life..
Whip , heres my redneck adjustments.. I added a swing connection and made up a knob screw so i can swing the blind left and vertical out of the way when transporting. Last 2 years i just drilled a hole in my antler knobs and jimmyrigged it. This year i added the swing bracket. Blind will swing back to 90 degrees when showtime happens. I added more netting to my shield to hide my draw. it worked!!! I shot my eastern last year at 13 steps but barely could see him through the net..BUT....he didnt spook when i drew. Chair is key to my whole set up..."You got to be still, you got to be real!"....
bow blind in place
(http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i150/jmb1221/bowblindattach.jpg)
bow blind in toting position.. How about that Slim Kanati Quiver.... :) smooth as boiled chitterlings
(http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i150/jmb1221/bowblindsideways.jpg)
JoeBuck Knob creation with blind in 90 degree toting position. Oh yeah , John Dill , i need to buy another black knob....guess where one of my Angle Qiuver knobs went..can you put that on my bill?
Julian...i have cost you some money today! best money your ever spent like the Crossfit advice you gave me....priceless!...working on your call now. :)

Good luck and have fun, heading down to Ocala on the 25th myself and can't wait!

Mississippi War Shield'!!!!! Ho, you have officially named my blind!
It just a bird!! Oh where have I heard that! ML
Whip, We call em Chittlins. I'm taking a bunch of them to cook for my buds on a hunt in may.
I bet most of the 5 never ate them. they are quit tastey if you cook them outside. As the late Jerry Clower use to say. "Creek Washed or Stump Whoopped".
Oh yeh. sorry to get off topic. Joey, I really have been paying attention to this thread and the other on the pbs site. got my calls in the truck and practiceing hard everyday. DB
Go get em Joey

P.S. You guys better move the date up on your hunt.....I think my buddy batmans about to bust! :D
Opening morning in my blind! Gobblers sounding off all thru cypress- Joey is a nervous wreck- he gets here next weekend.
It's only a bird. Maybe a hog will come by!
Quit texting me evry minute on every gobble you hear!!! I can not take it..that's below the belt....then you text me and say they at the drumming log! Drumming log! That's where I hunt!............Al I'm hearing is my wife snoring. She hasn't tooted in an hour.........I am going to the donut shop.......
I've been tootin at em all morning- they won't come closer! Now what?
Time to Bushwack or go to camp and cut a Monkey tail or take a nap or ride around in the swamp buggy and fill feeders.
Well now I know where to drop u off- I'm outta coffee.
It's only a bird. I need a designated caller.
Sounds like Joey might need some chest waders down south. It's getting kinda thick.LOL

Good luck to all of you guys. I hope you all tag out! I know you will enjoy each others company. Cant wait for some pics.
What material did you use for your tree skirt to keep it from moving in the wind?
For those that dont know Marty, heres his pic.....Hes a lot fun maybe the most!.....and alot of trouble sometimes for a serious turkey bow hunter.....but being around him every spring reminds me "its not just a bird, but friendship" and i never leave his lease every year without my limit.....ok Marty thats the nicest thing i say to you this year....gloves back off!
He looks so serious....Great pic.
He looks pretty into that set up.
Way cool Joe! Good luck. Is this Marty Thompson you;re going with?
You guys are crackin' me up!!! Having moved to Yankeeland 6 years ago I fully understand a man's need for a chittlin' supper...good luck Joe. The scratch box you made me is tuned and ready for these yankee birds in 28 days :)

I'm pretty sure Joey's Great Grandfather invented chest waders. :D
My Great Grandfather invented the "wet" suit- wait- that's what happened when he drank.
You guys are to much.
Marty, u told me your grandpappy invented the short draw....or was it the short stroke?
Oh yeah and you better not have pot raost on the menu while i'm there...this redneck anit flying 1500 miles to eat a crockpot blade roast...i would some dang SeaFood!!!!!!!....not SeeFood.......things that got pinchers....we are 1 month in front of crawdad season...i need a fix.....and feed me any dates either and tell me their like candy ? ....how about like E-Lax....
I wondered where both those habits came from? Splains that!
The only thing with pinchers in Florida are crabs- mine are gone- how bout some mullet or cooter? Fried of course.
Joey,
I'm gone cut ya if you visit the donut shop! Huntin turkey's on a empty stomach enhances the hand eye coordination.

Look at the temptation I had to overcome all weekend! Delaney making poundcakes bought and paid for by Biggie and Sunny. I feel 9 foot tall and bullet proof after surviving that for an entire weekend! Bring on Mitten....I could take'eem....I know I could. :D

Don't know about turkeys (a few close encounters I here), but I heard the manager at the all you can eat seafood buffet, paid Joey and Marty to get out.
Sounds like they may close the deal today.
Never- ever tell a Tarheel fan anything- he'll put it on the internet!
Yesterday afternoon, Joey and I went to a big oak hammock and split up. I found a palmetto clump about 10yds round and cut a hole big enough for a stool and to shoot out. I set out a Jake and hen and settled in for the afternoon. Turns out Joey was about 80yds to my right- I saw him get up and down a couple times adjusting his set up. Man, I thought, what's the big deal? I found out.
At 6 pm I heard a thunder of birds running to me- turned out to be 3 big gobblers! They put the brakes on a foot in front of the Jake and circled making this noise Joey told me was an aggressive purr- all I know is they were pissed and so was I! They had stopped just a foot short of my shooting window :( . I had put the Jake too far to the left of that window and could not shoot. My heart was at cardiac level.
They kinda calmed down when my plastic bird didn't react and walked back behind me. I scratched this little call Joey had made me and they milled around and appeared to my right side this time and were walking toward the "master" I just knew it was gonna be a done deal.
Gotta go- in my blind and birds gobbling unless that's Joey. 39 degrees in the swamp and the sun just gettin over the trees.
Gettin' good boys...the action is heating up!!!
I ain't sayin' for who though... :dunno:
Aaaaahhhh, the highs and lows of turkey bow hunting :)
Joey had out his new strutting decoy that looks more like a turkey than a real turkey. These birds were goin right to him when he strums a tune on one his many selections and they stopped dead in their tracks- and not from an arrow. He hit it a few more licks and the next thing I know- they turned around and walked away! He never saw them. Makes ya wonder how often that happens when you're calling? What an eye opener for me.
At dusk, I walked over to him and he says" man where'd you learn to do those aggresive purr calls so purrfectly! Ha! I told and showed him what happened and he just stared at me. Hell I never heard an agressive purr call let alone make one.
He showed me what was wrong with my set up and showed me about a "draw" tree and how I wasn't thinkin blah blah blah. All I know is I needed a bird to go one more foot! Just one foot! I asked if wanted me to show him how to make that call and he just stared again.
But oh what a morning I just had.
Oh boy this getting good.
Jack

The swamp was alive with gobbles this morning. I was in an old wooden hog trap that had been there at least 20 years that is about 100 yds from the edge of the cypress. I heard at least 8 different birds. I yelped for a while and when the birds flew down all I heard were hens. So I mimicked them- you know- made fun of em! Well here comes several dark shapes right to me that turned out to be 6 jakes. We have a 6" minimum beard rule so I took some pics and enjoyed the moment. Pretty neat stuff really. They remind me of my twin sons- pushing each
other around all the time. They finally walked away tired of the plastic reception.
An hour later a couple hens walked by followed by a bird with about an 8" beard! I could not interest him to say the least and he followed them everywhere. Here came the 6 jakes not far behind too. I figured I'd have to shoot my way outta there.
The hens took their followers and moved on and I was thankful for the sighting. I played a little tune on a JB boxcall and the next thing I know- he's walking up to my decoys! And here comes the jakes too! Oh man/ I'm sure they heard my heartbeat but they definitely saw me reach for the bow. Talk about a let down!!!! I don't know how you serious turkey guys can take all this dissapointment! Kinda reminds me of a no touch....... Nevermind. I was as high as a kite- then had a flat tire all in an hour. Now I admit I wasn't 100%ready when he walked in, but I'm learnin.
Here's the sad news- Joey has not seen a gobbler. All the camp goobers- especially me- are seeing birds. Not him.
Batman- who you want to hunt with in Nebraska? The facts speak for themselves. All he wants to do is get back to camp and eat. ( Man- wait til he reads this )
Got a few gobbling over on this side of 70 but haven't had any come onto my little 20 acres. Good luck guys!
Marty,I have not decided if you are making it easier, or harder for me to wait until April 15th.Just keep it coming, anyway. :D
Bill
If they got a hog problem when we get to Nebraska, I'm hunting with Thomas. If not I will have to go with the only guy to take the Royal slam of turkeys with trad epuipment. No osceolas in nebraska. lol
Joey put a couple gobblers to bed last eve- I want more than anything for him to get one. He has been snake bit this trip! They are tuned up already on the roost and I hear them down near him- fingers crossed. We have laughed since Thursday.
So that's what's Marty been doing tapping on his phone all weekend...Heck he is one HERE!
let's back up...Marty had 3longbeards at 10 feet....they spooked walked around him then appeared to be headed for me.......
Rule number789...... Do not try a new striker on your NEW pot call......it sounded like ....well........the gobblers never made it to me nor did I ever see them.....
Oh did Marty mentioned HE CUT ME OFF!
No BS right here.....Marty can run a long box ...Friday morning he had me fooled sometimes..I made this long box years ago and he has got it broke in...I may have to take it back
I can't remember how many years I have been down here...maybe 11 or 12... Swamp birds are tough.. best part of trip is spending time with Marty ,RuthAnne ,Sarah, Daniel and Micheal... We laughed a lot and turkeys taught me another rule... Bedsides the fact I almost starved too death.......I'll come back if he will have me.....
He must have a tapeworm- I have NEVER had a guest complain about food- quality or quantity.
Even if it is just a bird, this is great stuff right here!
You not feed a 260# fried chicken expert ...baked white bean, spinach and turkey sausage casserole .......
Now the Thursday supper was over the top.....lobster,clams shrimp and other stuff I could not pronounce but awesome. ..
My snacks for the weekend was pecans and dates???? WTH?.....would have paid $10 for bag of chilli fritos by Saturday
We need to add Fried chiken to our list of eats for may. DB
Y'all just need to add Fried to that list Batman.
ttt
That tree skirt is AWESOME looking....as is the decoy. Good luck on the toms!
Bisch
This is one of the ones I was thinking about - thanks for finding it Randy
I have read this three times and spit coffee thru my nose each time :D
I can't wait till April now!
