Title: Mapping Wyoming?
Post by: Duckbutt on February 27, 2011, 06:05:00 PM
I drew an elk tag for WY and am in new territory both literally and figuratively.  I've elk hunted wilderness areas in other states and just went to mytopo.com and printed the suckers out.  All public land so biggest decision was picking a trail head.  This year, I'll be hunting public via BLM and state land but will be hunting and/or crossing private ground enrolled in the HMA program.  What are the best topo map sources for hunting that give you the boundary info that will be critical in Wyoming?    :help:
Best...Julian

I think you should contact the USGS in Denver.  Google it to find out for sure.  They will send you a map that basically shows you what to buy.

Another source to consider is:  www.mytopo.com. (http://www.mytopo.com.)   Their best feature comes to light when you need to buy a couple of maps.  Instead of having to buy multiple maps you can customize your own map by centering it over muliple areas.  Not sure if this explanation is that clear but when accessing their site it becomes very clear.  You can try and make your own map and there's no cost until you actually buy it.

Doug, mytopo is what I've used in the past.  Love that site but the land ownership issues in WY are kind of a new twist for me.  I don't know if that can be overlayed on a mytopo map or not.  I need to look.

Duckbutt,
What area did you draw? Land ownership may or may not be an issue, depending on where you will be hunting.

Check this site out...

http://www.huntinggpsmaps.com/

They sell maps for your GPS that will show you EXACTLY where you are, with public and private land all mapped out for you. My brother and I found these maps indispensible while antelope hunting BLM land in Wyoming this past fall.

They're a bit pricey up front, but well worth it for the piece of mind they provide, and if you buy the download version you get free updates for life. (They've e-mailed me about a few updates since our September hunt already). Plus they have the units for each species mapped out, so you never have to worry about accidently wandering out of your unit if you're hunting close to the border.

Nothing is marked in Wyoming (which was very strange to an Easterner used to nothing but Posted signs everywhere), so if you want to do it 'by the book' and make sure you never inadvertantly cross onto private land this is the way to go!

I have  http://www.huntinggpsmaps.com/
for Washington State.  I did not get the topos, since my GPS already has them.  I purchased the Public Land Boundaries Transparent GPS Map for $35 dowload.  I also got the google earth overlays so I could do the planning with Google earth.

This has proved invaluable for my accessing a local public parcel which I hunt.  If I didn't have this I would not be able to know whether I was on the public land or in someones back yard.

Highly recommend  http://www.huntinggpsmaps.com/
