Title: Exciting "hunt"?
Post by: stiknstringer on February 26, 2011, 04:28:00 AM
I was awakened just about an hour ago by the sounds of all three of my beagles. When I looked out the window I couldn't see anything, but the dogs were so worked up that I had to investigate. So, I grabbed my flashlite and went to check it out.I new something was wrong when the dogs wouldn't come out of there box but still kept barking. It was then that I noticed the skunks nose sticking out from UNDER the dog's box.Quite a touchy situation.I managed to coax the dogs out of their box and away from their pen, hoping that the skunk would vacate if we gave him some space, but wasn't going anywhere. So,I started rocking the dog box back an forth until he came out and started literally chasing me and the dogs around the yard.Enough! I went inside, grabbed my bow and 2 bheads, went back out and dispatched the little critter. The dogs and I were relieved. My camera battery was dead so it's charging.Pics to follow.

Congratulations!  I try to snuff every skunk, opossum and coon I find around my place.  I know alot of folks think that is wrong, but they all carry a disease that is lethal to horses.  It is commonly refered to as Opossum Disease, but I don't know the techinal name.  It causes horses to loose muscle control.  At first in the hind quarters then totally.  Very bad way to go.
I team rope and dearly love horses, so the little critters either have to stay away from my house or pay the price.

God Bless,
Nathan

We trap a bunch each year.  I used to think that shooting them in the head with a .22 would keep them from spraying.  NOPE.

What does work is to gut shoot them and then come back in 4-5 hours.  They don't spray and the mess is easier to deal with.

LKH, I got lucky and nailed this one in the ear and he never sprayed.I walked right up, picked him up by the tail and put him in a plastic trash bag.I actually missed ny trash pick up last week, so he's still sitting in the can waitin' for this friday and still no odor.
