Title: Bow String....Problem
Post by: no nothing on February 25, 2011, 08:46:00 PM
I am new so I have no idea why my B-50 bow string is unwraping itself . It is unwraping itself at the very ends. The string is 6 weeks old. I just received some wax in the mail today that I ordered from 3 river, how often do i wax the string. Any advise is welcome and needed.

Thank you

I wax mine every couple weeks but know guys who go months if not longer. Do you have any pictures of it. Almost sounds like you don;t have it twisted enough to hold together.

Initially I give my bow string a nice thick wax, but not so much that there is excess wax on the string. Put a little chunk of wax on the string every 2 or 3 inches and then melt it into the string with your fingers, by moving them up and down the string til it 'soaks' in.

A small piece of leather folded over works well for getting the wax into the string.

When you say "very end" is that at the loops or a few inches down where the string is woven together?  A picture would be great.

Eric.

The way it sounds it that you have twisted it the wrong way and it is starting to come apart. More than likely since you are not a string maker you are probably past the point of having a serviceable strings. The loops will start to separate etc. Here is the text I send with all my strings I mail out.

If you twist your string correctly it will never come apart. To shorten your string while on the bow slide the upper loop down the bow limb far enough so you can remove the lower loop. With the loop POINTING TOWARDS THE FLOOR place the twisted part of the string about 2" above the loop between your thumb and index finger. Rotate the string clockwise to shorten it. Restring your bow and let the string settle for a short time. Repeat if necessary. If you point the loop towards the ceiling and rotate it clockwise it will come apart. Be sure to keep the loop pointing towards the floor.

This is how you will see 90% or more of strings made today. If the string is left handed it will be in reverse.

Here is a really cheesy video I put on youtube this summer. I will make a better one soon and put it on my webpage.
