I have a Thunderchild on order. I own 3 metal riser bows and am not that familiar with all the different types of wood I have watched the slideshow and have not been able to decide on which woods to get. Do any of you guys have pics of bocote any suggestions would be helpful
Thanks,
Jim
I have a Thunderchild and it has some of the best looking wood I've seen. The riser is Gaboon Ebony and Hawaiian Koa....limbs are Koa. Pictures doesn't do the wood justice. Beautiful! Has a brindle looks to it.
You made an excellent choice in a bow. Fit and finish...none better. The shootability and forgiveness of this bow is amazing for a 56" bow. Shoots like a much longer bow. The only thing I wished mine was about 5-7#s heavier in draw weight. It's 56", 46# @ 28". I'll probley get on the list for another at about 53#.
Mike
You would not be disappointed with bacote.
I have a Shawnee with curly koa - incredable.
Google black and white ebony. Jim called it dalmatian ebony. Ask him if he has a picture of the bow he had at Comptons last year (it was sold waiting for a customer to pick it up). If he does, that's what you'll order.

From what I understand the black and white ebony is hard to find. I have a buffalo bow coming that will have Tiger Myrtle limbs and Zicote riser. 48@28 58"
You might talk to the big guy about ironwood. He's making me one, and he got some more ironwood. I talked to him today, and he is really stoked about the looks of this exotic wood. I believe that my bow will be a real stunner when it is done.
Go on veneer supply, they have pics of it.....that is what im going with for my new one on the limbs that is being built
there are so many woods to pick from and I can barely keep track. Cook woods and veneer supply have good close up pictures of different exotic woods and there are many more.
thanks, bigjim
I could watch that slideshow all day long.
I have to agree with Mike , I have seen that wood combo, and that is the way my TC is being made. Jim said I should have it , in a few weeks. Iam getting a 54" at 50#@28"
Bocote is probably my all around favorite wood, but there is quite a range of colors with bocote. I like the darker end of the range. It is a beautiful choice.
Looking at his slide show can be a little overwhelming, so many nice combinations. I tend to like the darker colors, bocote, cocobolo, I have seen some waterfall bubinga that was fabulous. Good luck choosing!
I have a thunderchild with a Macassar ebony riser and Bocote limbs and overlays, absolutely exquisite !You won't be dissapointed with any of Jims woods.

Me too, and I had to make myself stop watching it because it hurts too much. It was making me crazy. :help: :banghead:
With Big Jim it doesn't seem to matter what wood you have, it will be beautiful. I had him make my Buffalo Bow with Tulipwood, it reminds me of fire.
Jim's 'Magic Woodshed' won't tolerate ugly wood. Whatever you decide will be stunning. I also love Bocote, it's so grainy, but the best looking Bocote I've seen is the Birds-Eye Bocote, but I've only seen it once, in my Ambush bow. I'm not sure how common it is.

That's a real beauty katman!
Thanks to Big Jim the talented artist and bowyer, and she shoots as good as she looks.
Thank you... so many woods hard to decide but thats one of the things about ordering a custom bow that really makes it interesting.
Jim
TJ,
I am in same boat as you. When my number comes up... Big Jim and I are gonna do a little wood picking brain-storming! ;)
After viewing Big Jim's slide show for the 10th time, I can only come up with ~ 20 combinations that I would be totally satisfied with.
I seriously believe that his work is so appealing that once you pain stakingly narrow the selection down to one, it won't be long before another will soon be waning on your mind.
I had to make my wood choice last week when Jim called and it was twice as hard as I have two bows ordered! I went with some old favorites and left the rest up to Big Jim. I know the bows will turn out great :)
hello, about the Big Jim bow , when you recieve one is it a protection sock with ?
Jim's bows come with a nice sock :)

I've been agonizing over this same thing for 4 months now! Hopefully making your decision will be easier for you than it was for me.
I think I'm finally settled...
...for now...
...maybe...
