Title: A different bunny hunt with pics of bighorns
Post by: steadman on February 24, 2011, 02:00:00 PM
So a good friend and fellow Trad ganger Conner Parry said he know's of a place that holds a few cottontails. Being that I have cabin fever so bad right now I can't stand it, we hook up and head to the hills. Now our bunny hunting is in a tad different area than most would think. If you have ever seen the foothills of the Salt Lake/Utah valleys you know our foothills are steep, and not hills at all. In fact they rise staight up from the valley floor. I knew we'd be in for a hike, which was real good as well. I needed to stretch the legs. We hiked up the mountain checking likely spots and stump shooting along the way. We saw a ton of deer with a spike and decent 3 point, why they haven't dropped, I don't know.

We gained a few hundred feet in elevation and flushed a rabbit. It ran by Conner with an arrow flying right behind it, it then lept up the hill. I figured it would stop in cover when it got out of site. I cruised up the hill and got to the top, out of wind. I spotted movement in the thick brush, picked a spot a promptly hit some branches in front of the rabbit.

This is the different part of the hunt. We then spotted some bighorns bedded and decided to get a closer look. We climbed and got to them and took a few photos with out disturbing them. We were a good 200 yards away, so didn't get real great pics. This is a decent ram with some ewes.

I find it interesting how when you guys back east talk rabbits, it's thick brush. Here it's steep mouintains, with bighorns bedded above them    :)

I think your style of rabbit hunting trumps ours Ryan (at least scenery wise)! Thanks for the donation to the Bunny Stomp too!

Fantastic outing, yes sir, the rabbits around here like it thick thicker and thickest, and no big horns to speak of.

Great photos. Where I hunt rabbits, it's brushy undergrowth in pine forests.

Steadman has been working out so I was having a tough time keeping up with him! You guys think the bighorns are cool.... Try seeing Steadman running up the hill in hot pursuit of a cottontail, if not for the brush, that rabbit was in trouble   :)

Looks like a great time.  The last time I hunted in Colorado with the boom stick, it was snowy and cold.  Saw a ton of rabbits out in the sage and all I could think about was how cool it would be to have my longbow and quiver full of blunts.  I ended up getting an elk, but was almost more interested in the bunnies!

Ryan never invites Tracy or me on any of his rabbit hunts. I'm alittle hurt, how about you Tracy?

I would have to agree with you Shane, although not as funny as watching Shane chase down a prarie dog. Ben you are welcome out here any time, you just have to hunt downwind  :)

Rabbit season closed today and I wasn't able to hunt, so bumping this thread up again is as close to rabbit hunting as i'll get for about six months   :(

Pretty cool guys looks like a good way to blow off some cabin fever. I didn't know there was bighorns in the Wasatch range. Cool to see
