With a Walnut Dymondwood handle section? Just looking for opinions :D
Bocote for a complimenting colors, Spalted myrtle for a contrasting color.
Gotta go with Bocote also.
Ya Bocote would be nice. You mean for limb veners?
Dirty Boo would work also.
I used flat cut walnut veneers the 2 times I used it. Would crossgrain cut brown actionwood be a choice? I am terrible at picking combos.
I have a little walnut riser bow with osage veneers--it looks pretty good to me.
Carpathian elm burl
dirty boo for me too :bigsmyl:

Walnut Dymondwood...I'd say maybe red elm stained to match.
I'm with Spectre.......I think osage is the one. At first it will be a "contrast".....but it will become a "compliment". You can kill two birds with one stone.
Winterhawk1960
Texas Ebony and Osage..
I beliving incorporating dymondwood is a great. move.
The walnut dymondwood shades that I am familiar with are from medium to light.
There are many appealing combinations such as:
Stained Tamo Ash
Rose woods
Olive Ash
Tiger Myrtle
Hope you find the most over-all appealing combination.
Waterfall ash........
Good Zebra would be fantastic,. Myrtle wood is another I have uses . Bocate has already been mentioned. lightly stained fiddleback maple is great with it as is quilt maple. If you can get good claro walnut with a lot of lights then it is good. Of course the best would be high grade koa.
God Bless, Steve
I gotta give koa
I think Pacific Yew,Osage or myrtle would look great.
Tiger maple,Curly Maple or quilted maple stained to match would be nice.
Walnut with some cross cut grain. Ken
Cherry would look nice or something reddish.
Opps, I thought you said gray/silvertone dymondwood and I thought cherry would look good. With Walnut I would think curly anegre would look great. Let me know if you need me to send you some. Chad
I have Imbuia veneered Bear limbs from Rose Oak. They are chocolate colored with wavey maple like grain -- very beautiful. Olive Ash on Silvertips is great and bocote is great.
You might be able to see some very nice pictures by checking out "Idahocurt". Schafer just bought some fantastic Myrtle lams from Curt for my upcoming silvertip. They will be so wild I'm going to have to find my psychedelic Nero shirt from the 1960's to wear when I shoot it!
Quilted sappele, or waterfall bubinga! Shawn
Well, everybody here summed it up...but the thought to ponder is that EVERY piece of wood is different. When you just say "bocote"for example ...that leaves the field wide open. If you say HEAVILY figured bocote lightly stained (or not) to match walnut without hiding the grain...you've hit the nail on the head.
All the woods mentioned are KILLER compliments...IF you specify your needs! Quilted sappele is a tough one to beat as mentioned by Shawn, but it may need to be stained and is nicer when very figured. If you don't clarify, you can't complain in the end. The bowyer might have a totally different opinion than you on what looks good. Be specific in your needs!!!!
Can't wait to see pics of the finished bow.
Thanks for the info guys, I was thinking flat grain zebrawood but that stuff scares me, its the only "real" wood I have had check on me and it totally ruined a bow.
Yornoc, I am the bowyer building it :D
My customer said he wants walnut dymondwood matched with whatever veneer I think looks good! Easy enough right? :banghead:
BOCOTE, YEW, SPALTED MYRTLE or BIRDSEYE MAPLE.
Jason,
How bout Quilted Maple?
Jason builds a fantastic bow...." I will own another"....
I'd definitely go with one of the figured maples. Dyed or undyed is really up to you. I'm partial to heavily figured curly maple...Mike
Red Elm
Red Elm :archer: :archer2:
I'm going to have to have a quilted maple or birdseye maple bow some day!
I have to say, although it probably wouldn't work with this walnut dym, my favorite of all woods is cocobolo. Today I signed up for a recurve (hycurve) made in N. Idaho that will be Cocobolo. A 2-year wait!
I've been working with quite a few different veneers lately. You can see pictures on the "Bows in Stock" page of my website.
Until a couple of days ago I would have told you I'm partial to the Curly & Birdseye Maple. I just got a hold of some "Waterfall" Bubinga and I now have a new favorite.
Matching up veneers for anyone is tough business. It's like buying jewelry for your wife - what looks good to you might not look good to her. All the suggestions have created a great number of options. My vote would be curly black cherry.
I wonder if you ought to look at performance characteristics of these different veneers to narrow down your choices. Afterall, performance is an important factor in getting a new bow.
I was under the impression that the veneers were so thin that they didn't really affect performance noticeably enough?
Maybe I'm confusing veneers with laminations.
I really like grenadillo, don't see them much but they are beautiful and redish colored.
Red Elm stained to match or Quilted Maple....
Randy
Jason,
There have been a wide variety of desireable options submitted.
Now would be a great time to consider starting a poll to narrow down the selection to what may appeal most to the general trad gang membership.
The results could prove valueable in the future.
Jason,
Here are some pictures of a Hummingbird longbow I use to own. It had a walnut diamond wood riser with bocote veneers on the back and tiger maple on the belly. Very pretty. God bless, Scott. I think flat grain Red elm would look real nice without being too flashy. Sort of natural camo at the same time. Bet you can't guess my favorite limb wood!! :dunno: Bob
bacote
Check out some of Chads Lost Creeks. He gets real brave mixing the Dymond woods with other woods in a riser. The grey brown combos he comes up with are pretty striking.
I've seem your bows you'll figure it out and have a very happy customer ....
a few.......Not all walnut but maybe some ideas...
