Just checking to see if anyone else is getting fired up for bear hunting!!!!!!
I'm starting to get the itch REALLY bad, if your going on a bear hunting trip or are planning to hunt bears yourself, post up!!! Lets hear your plans for 2011!!!
I'll start, 2011 will be my first year hunting bears or anything for that matter with a bow. I haven't personally hunted in the last 2 years, I was guiding in 09-10. I can't wait to sit in the stand with my bow & see what happens!
I have a few things to get ready before the season starts, get the meat barrells out & build a couple shaker barrells. I won't hang stands until the snow is gone.
Come on April!!!!!
I'm going to Manitoba to hunt with Ryan at Stickflingers. I have never done a bear hunt but I pretty much can't wait...but wait I must until JUNE :banghead:
This will be my sons first bear hunt. We are going to Burntwood lake lodge in Manitoba. He will be shooting a recurve for the first time. My 83 year old uncle will be going also. I am really excited. We will be hunting on the ground with a shotgun backup. This will be a first.
I will be hunting here in Manitoba on my personal baits during the first week of May. After that I will be guiding bears for Stickflingers Manitoba Bowhunts. To say I am excited about this upcoming season is an understatement!

im taking my 17 year old son to Manitoba with Adrenalin Outfitters to do some bear hunting this June. I've taken one bear a few years back and my son has never shot a bear. Can't wait for my trip!!!

My ex (from Chicago originally) called me once (whispering) and asked me if it was bear season one spring (N. Indiana)
I patiently explained that Indiana didnt have a bear season.....and if any bears, dang few maybe down on the far south border but doubted it.
She, just as patiently, explained to ME that she was sorry but there WAS a bear in her back yard!
Scratching my head, I asked her to describe it.
Gathering steam ( :mad: picture weeping and nashing of teeth)she told me that SHE NEW WHAT A *** **** BEAR LOOKED LIKE and there was one in her back yard!!! :scared:
I asked her what it was doing.
She told me it was eating grass around her flowers.
Suddenly, a light bulb appeared above my head.
Ah HAAAAAA!!
"Is it over by that hole near the bottom of the sycamore tree?" I asked?
"YES!!" She sighed :help:
"oh...(giggle)....well hon..........thats a groundhog."

Going to Manitoba toward the end of May. Going with my dad and two cousins. Fishing all morning and hunting in the evenings, should be a great time.
Don't worry Slowbowke I once spent 30 mins putting a stalk on a "bear" in Colorado. I was in a thicket and could see the top of a little aspen being pulled apart, once in a while I would see some dark spot move. Will long story short it ended up being the world record porcupine. :knothead:
Going back to Quebec for third time, Ron Henrys bear camp. My brother-in-law, two nephews are going for first time and my oldest son will be hunting for his first, although he has been there twice fishing . Cant wait. Everyone is excited,come on june.
I can just picture him... rich black fur, big wide paws, yawning and turning over right now.

I look forward to doing the local bear hunting here on Prince of Whales Island. I passed on some nice bears last year, hoping to come across that 8 footer. I've seen one 8 footer, but I did not have my bow at the time. I also have a trail camera picture of him, but he was too wise to come in when I was ready.
It seems like a lot of people are heading into Canada this year. Best of luck and post some pictures of your adventure.

The big guy thats still alive did get grazes by one of my shafts last spring. Don't have to tell me how big he was. looked like king kong at 6 yards!still can't sleep!I'll be with Huny24/7 this spring!

I'm taking my 18 year old son Tyler and 17 year old daughter Jennifer to hunt with Ryan at Manitoba Stickflingers in May. My wife and I will just be videographers. Family vacations just don't get any better than this. This will be their HS graduation present. Jen just gets hers a year early.

Dad and brother both drew tags here in Wisconsin starting in Sept. First thing I did when I found out was contact Stickflinger but he's keeping his trade secrets just that SECRETS! :) Just kidding Ryan, give me a call I've got a boatload of questions!

My buddies and I are headed back to Saskatchewan, in hopes of harvesting a nice bear. I'm also looking forward to the walleye fishing as well
I've set up 4 baits on a new territory last spring and got 3 visited.It was a test drive and I've hunted only 2 days,this spring's gonna be the real thing.
I wasn't planning to hunt bear this spring but I maybe hunting in Idaho this spring. I still can't apply for utah until next year agian because of the 2 year waiting period. My hunting partner's dad supplies a outfitter with truck loads of bait and has been offering a hunt to him and some friends. They told me last saturday I was on the list! This is an opportunity of life time for me,I just have to buy the tag and gas to go there. I will not belive it until I actually there hunting thou.
If not my nephew is close on bonus pionts and may draw a tag this year. I know I would be there to help him bait and for support.
I WISH!!!!! Not going to make it this year though, darnit!!!

I'm heading to Ontario in August with a bunch of friends and my brother. This will be my first bear hunt and first time in Canada. I am really looking forward it. A few of the guys going went last year and had a great hunt.
Looking forward to a couple of four day pack-in trips to my favourite area for some spot and stalk bear hunting this spring. April 1st is the opener, but from the looks of the snow pack up high it will be mid-May when it happens this year...
Hey Daz, do you hunt VI? I went as a spectator with my dad and brother. It was awesome we saw a lot of bears but the big boars were just out of range. If I were to go again I would probably wait until the last week of May into June to take advantage of the rut. Good luck!

I hunt closer to home in Region 8. We have a really healthy population here, but you have to burn the boot leather to make it happen.
A spring bear from VI would interest me, but definitely not a fall bear from there.

LOVE! bear hunting. Been at it since 2000 both at home (NH) and in Maine. We only have a fall season so I'll have to wait awhile yet, but plan to hunt on my own land and single bait site this autumn. Good luck to all! Todd
Yeah but with two rotorcuff operations and torn biceps it'll be crossbow season 2011!!
One of my buds was out on the back 40 the other day & saw some fresh bear tracks is the still 2' deep snow, looks like they might be checking things out a bit.
Myself & Jason built a couple shaker or roller barrels yesterday to add to a couple of our baits, hope they work!!!

Is that braided wire? If so make sure that it is heavy duty or the bears will snap it. Gotta love the shaker barrels!

It's 1/4" cable, once the bears figure out that 1 rotation of the barrel produces a pile of food, they won't try to get into it, they'll just roll it around.
I've talked to quite a few bear hunters that have used these for years with no problems, I also was concerned they would just tear it apart.
Ya, they ripped by 1/4" cable off. Somebody on this site mentioned that I might not have any barrels left when I went back to bait. Well he was right. One barrel was easy to find as it was right under my treestand. The other was submerged in the creek. It took a while to get that thing out :)
If this is your first time using shaker barrels you will love it. The bears stay at the bait a lot longer since it takes more effort to empty. Good luck this spring!

Crazy how strong a bear is eh. I don't really think you can totally bear proof a bait barrel, if they decide they want in, there gonna get in! hahaha!
Yeah, I really liked the idea of a shaker barrel for a few reasons, like you said, keeps them there longer, more shot opportunitys, most bears just lay at the mouth of the barrel & don't move, less trips to the bait barrel for me, thus, less human scent at the bait site.
Should be fun to watch, & yes, this is my first shaker.
Planning on going to SW virginia to hunt Black bear in the fall, Taking my nephew and planning to hunt with Nathan Killen.
Well, had a great weekend, it started off on Friday at 8 in the morning when I got a call from a bear hunting friend that a truck with 35 tones of corn flipped over dumping all the corn in the ditch.
We called a couple farmers for some feed bags & another friend of mine & off we went with 150 bags & a 2000lb tote. We shoveled & bagged corn from 9am until 7pm & ended up with around 7-8 tones of ***FREE*** bear bait between the 3 of us!!!

Headed out bright & early Saturday morning to take my roller barrel out to my new spot & to finalize the bait location in the new area I have been scouting for the past 2 years.
We found 3 sets of bear tracks in the snow, a fresh bite tree & another fresh scent tree with some hair on it. This is all at a new never been baited location. This area has more natural bear sign than any other place I have found, I have high hopes for this bait.
I got the location finalized (I think) & both barrels drug to the site, trimmed a few bushes, put a little bait in the barrel & headed home.
I don't expect any action this early in the season, but it's fun to get out, be back this weekend to thin bore brush & check it out.

Thanks guys I will be shooting one of 2 new to me Bear Take Downs recurves on my hunts.Thanks to a kind Tradgang member , I am going to try and use all vintage stuff on my hunts and film them in black and white might even wear my old Fread Bear hat with a little something in the hat band , just to do it right.
