Title: Broadhead Question
Post by: TxAg on February 22, 2011, 09:46:00 PM
Anyone shoot a 4-blade Magnus Stinger (or Buzzcut) out of a light poundage bow?

I've been shooting the solid black Magnus 2-blades, but the 4's seem to fly better. I'm just wondering how much penetration I'll sacrifice.

For what it's worth, I'm shooting a 460 grain arrow, 20% FOC, at about 170 fps....out of a 40# bow.

All replies welcome. Thanks.

What particular quarry are you referring to?

Deer/Turkey/Small Hogs.  Haven't killed a hog with a shield in a long time on our place...so I'm not terribly worried about that at this time.

I tried out the 4 blade stinger last year, was shooting wensels so I wanted a 150 gr. head and at that time all you could get in 150 gr. was the 4 blade.Shot two whitetails both with pass throughs. One was a quartering away and zipped through part of the opposite shoulder blade. Those heads are tuff, little hard to sharpen, but are razors out the pack.

I shoot the 4 blade Buzzcuts out of a 49# bow. I was shooting 600gn arrows so penetration was incredible. My trajectory was bad so I removed weight tubes and fixed that. I'm now shooting about 525gns.

That being said I doubt you will loose much.

Thanks guys.  I couldn't find exactly what I was looking for when I did a search earlier.  From what I've read here (and in the search) and a few other places, I think I'll be fine trying the 4 blades.

The stingers would be a great choice for your setup but don't use the bleeders.  Just shoot the 2-blades.

They are good heads, with or without bleeders the penetrate well and shoot good!!  I don't think you'll have a problem on thin skinned critters, but might would steer towards the 2 blades to play it safe.

Two blades for me... but I have never had any flight issues.

I've shot the two and four blade Stingers. No flight problems with either one, but the two blade is my preference

I have shot the stingers out of 47# longbow and fiberglass shafts for a few years, they are awesome, rarely don't I get a pass through. Shot a hog in FL blew through him and he turned and loked at me like nothing happend, I shoot again and hit him in the heart and he bucks just like a heartshot deer. On inspection I find the 4 blade stinger has passed through and all the way through the opposte legbone! They are awesome!

TxAg, I cussed Zwickeys forever till I improved my spin check. Now, 2-blades are all I;ve used for over 30 years.

I got a good deal on 3 packs of the 100gr. 4 blade Stingers and 2 of those are buzzcuts. I use 55gr adapter on the tip of my woodies made from a 2312 aluminum shaft 2" section plus the insert for 55gr. total plus the 100gr. Stinger for 155grains up front. Total arrow wt. is around 520gr. out of my 48# Grizzly.

You shouldn't see any loss in penetration over 2 blade Magnus heads at all. Just put it in the right place and the Stinger will take care of the rest.

Stinger bleeders are fairly small, and shouldn't cause you any problems...when poked in the right spot. lol

I have shot a bunch of deer, bear, elk with them and had no problems (when I put the arrow in the soft spot) and great blood (ususaly)
