Has anyone used German pine shafts? Would you recommend them?
There was a thread on here recently about those German Pine Shafts. Try a search.
Ok I figured there was a catch when I saw the price...I want to make some woodies to hunt with. I have used some ramin that my father-in-law graciously gave me to learn on making flu flus and such. I would like to try to make some nice arrows for deer and or hog. what shaft material would you suggest?
While there are alternatives, Surewood shafting is an outstanding choice, either direct or from a dealer like Braveheart.
I used the German Pine recently for practice arrows for my teenage daughter, they worked out fine for that purpose. the weight range within the dozen was a little broad, and they were not the straightest shafts I've ever seen but they straightened out pretty easy with a little compression. the grain run-out was not any worse than most cedar. they would probably work out OK as hunting arrows if you picked through a bunch and used the best for hunting and the rest for stumping.
the best shafts I have gotten in the last few years were sitka spruce from Hildebrand, every shaft was pretty much perfect and the weight only varied about 20 grains over a hundred. they make an arrow a little lighter than I would like for hunting, but now that I've gotten into gasket lacquer I'm just finding out that you can add some weight in a hurry with more coats.
I am still using PO cedars that I made years ago for my hunting arrows, have not tried Surewoods yet but from all the good things that are being said I will be giving them a try
