Title: Several new broadheads out. What's your favorite?
Post by: dryfly on February 19, 2011, 10:23:00 PM
Old standby's, Bear Razorheads, HH, Grizzlies, Zwickey Eskimos, Magnas 2 blade, Snuffers, and as of late, the Zepher Tempest and Sasquatch, Stos, and the Wenzel Woodsmans.

I've been hearing about a few new heads that are getting some attention, but don't know the names of them.

What are the best ones out there of the recent entries?    :campfire:

I would only consider myself a possible relevent source if it came to turkeys. The game you are pursueing and your particular set-up could have some significant impact on the BH of choice and then it may only be narrowed down likely to a long list of viable options.

Friend, I am refering to deer and elk hunting, and 125 to 150 gr. heads. I've used most of the ones mentioned, but am always interested in the new stuff. I generally shoot Woodsman or Snuffers, but do shoot the Razor Caps also.

I'm refering to some of the newer 3 blade screw in heads that appeal to Trad. hunters.

Thanks

I use glue-ons and I haven't seen anything that would make me switch away from the Stos and the Magnus II single blades.

There is a nice thread on the "Dark Continent' forum titled 'Back from Magersfontein in RSA' which you may find relevent.

They are using the Big Jim Big 3 (300 gn 1 1/2" 3-blade).

Other than that, there are many other Trad Ganger's with much greater experience.

Best of luck and your search should not be too difficult.

Pretty sure the VPA is what I was looking for. A buddy told me about them, and said it was the best thing he had seen in a lot of years. The 175 with the 50 gr. brass inserts I use will give me 225 on the tip. Should shoot well, and I prefer 200 to 225.

Thanks, I'll probably give em a call.

Have used the 125gr Zwickey Eskimos with 100gr inserts, for years. I use these for deer and elk. Never had them fail me yet. The main thing to remember is keep them sharp, no matter what you use.

I use Magnus II broadheads. But I'm going to give STOS broadheads a try.

This is one that just came out late last summer. I had terrific results with it. It's a 2-blade single bevel.

Terry,
I use to shoot every new BH that came out! I learned that if your getting pass thur shots, and good arrow flight, good blood trails, quick kills....it's hard to improve! I have a box of the HIGH $$$$ BH's, all sitting in  a box, cause I've learned that NOTHING works any better than my 4 blade "Z"!!

This year Ace 160gr tipped heavier arrows for around 750 gr total. Great speed, penetration, & very sharpenable.

I think the Abowyers are the best head on the market and at the fairest price for its type. However I also like the Simmons heads and the VPA (and threeblades they make for others) threeblade heads. There are lots of quality offerings today and its almost safe to say just shoot what looks good.

I'm gonna revisit the single bevel broadheads, esp. the Zwickey No Mercy and the Grizzly.  I have been reading up on how to get'em good and sharp.  (Thanks to ya'll that have posted "how-to" on this subject).  I'm always searching for the broadhead that gives the best balance between penetration and exit wound size.  I don't shoot alot of poundage and most of the time from treestands at deer in thick cover.  That "S" shaped exit wound from the single bevels appears to have the potential to let lots of blood hit the ground.  However, I have a good supply of Zwickey 4-blades Eskimos just in case....
