I am new to archery, and have a newbie question. I have screw in inserts on my traditional only arrows from 3 river. I saw the chart that they have that puts my grain weight for my tip between 125-175 grain. To pick a boardhead do you need to include the weight of the insert for the screw in? does grain change if I were using glue on tip?

Yep, most aluminum screw in adaptors weigh between 23 and 42 grains. Steel screw in adaptors can weigh 75-125 grains. When looking at a glue on it is the weight of the head only, you will then add the above adaptor weights to that depending on which one you use. I like the 42 gr long aluminum personally. So a 125 glue on head with my adaptor weighs around 160 grains after sharpened up. If you buy a screw in from the factory the weight is already totalled for you. If for example you look at a screw in Wensel Woodsman that weighs 150gr it is the same as a 125 glue on just already has the aluminum adaptor in it.
Thanks, so it is a 125 grain srew in broadhead plus the insert....Say 35 grain... gives me 160 grain. How do I know what weight they put on my arrows, under the install insert service it does not say the weight. I guess I will have to call them on Monday.

I wouldn't trust the charts and wouldn't have them cut the shafts or glue the inserts. If you have a dremel you can cut the shafts yourself. Get some sticks of hot melt glue at walmart or a hardware or craft store and you can do your own inserts so they can be removed if you need to cut the arrow shorter. I wouldn't worry about broadhead right now this early in the game either. Get a test kit of different field point weights (125gr., 145gr.,etc. up to 300gr.) By using the field points and tuning you'll figure out what weight of head you need. In my experience it took a while of just shooting and working on my form before I got any real results from tuning.

Especially if one is shooting aluminum arrows. Stu's calculator has been spot on for me. All I do is experiment with the point weight in conjunction with raising or lowering the brace height.
