Title: Bear Grizzly (new to me) age?
Post by: Spindrift on February 18, 2011, 09:05:00 PM
Hey there, first post.. i switched over from compound bows to traditional bows recently with the purchase of a cheap longbow.. i was browsing our local classifieds and found a Bear Grizzly for $100.. i knew it was an older bow but am not positive on age.. ive searched and it has what appears to be the aluminum medallion could be pewter but its colored like aluminum on it.. no leather grip "glass powered on it, 6P1288 serial number.. greenish colored laminates.. also what was the standard brace height and where was it measured from. oh yeah its 45lb draw.. i figure ill go up in weight a couple months before hunting season.. this should break me in..

good buy i thought  :)  cheers

Your Grizzly is a 1966. Start at 8" BH and work up and down.

First off, welcome!  Glad you are trying trad.  I made the switch a year ago.  It's a bunch of fun, but give yourself some patience.

To answer your question yes, deepest point of the grip.  Start at 7 1/2 and go up until it's quiet.  The exact height will depend on your draw length, arrows etc...

If it's a 1966 then those are sweet little bows but some of the 58" Grizzly's can be loud.

Post a pic!  You can't go wrong with a Grizzly.  I own 11 of them. My wife bought me one and they just kept showing up ever since  :)   I may shed a few.

Ive been reading Asbells book which has given me quite a bit of insight on HIS methods of tuning a traditional bow, but he seems to be pretty roundabout which i find nice seeing as how hunting traditional bow setups is a mix of proper form and technique under the users own comfort range...

What I found to be a great book for beginning is Brian Sorrell's "A Beginner's Guide to Traditional Archery".  It covered much of the basiscs in a level of detail sufficient for a beginner.  He has a great shooting program for beginners if you have the patience too.

Asbell is also good.  I am reading his stuff now.  I try to read/watch everything I can.  Shooting Forum on this site is also very good.
