Title: Ideas for sharpening a 160 Snuffer
Post by: frassettor on February 18, 2011, 07:29:00 PM
I got a pack of 160 Snuffers and watched Charlie's video several times in the How To section on sharpening the Wensel Woodsman by laying it on  file. My problem is the the Snuffrer will not all fit on the file. I ordered the biggest file from 3 rivers thinking it would work fine, but it hangs over about 3/16 or so.

How do you suggest I sharpen them?  Will a All-Sharp by Magnus work?

You can send them to me and I'll put them on a belt sander and get the bevels all level....then finish them up with a jewel stick.....and send them back to ya hunt ready.

Sounds like you need a wider file. Best take a broadhead to the hardware store to make sure.

Or you could take Terry up on his offer.

Take Terry's offer, that's exactly how I sharpen my Snuffers, except I use a fine bastard file instead of a jewel stick.

Very generous offer by Terry but for your next pack of 160's buy you a 16" Nicholson mill bastard file from Fastenal. They have 2000+ stores nationwide or hit their website. It is wide enough to drag your 160's on two blades down on the file at a time. Drag them on a piece of heavy leather glued to a wooden block about 4"X 12" or so and you are in business. If you don't have leather use the inside of a cereal box or other fine cardboard. JMHO

I like a big diamond stone-block. Several different brands. I think mine are DMT. Top sharening area is about 2.5" X 5" or so. I have one in coarse and one fine. I use the same method for sharpening my G-5 Montecs. Gets them "shavin" sharp!!

That's a great offer by Terry but I'd be real hesitant to rely on someone else to sharpen my broadheads.  Take him up on in but you owe it to yourself to learn how yourself in the future.

That's an important factor in the heads I use - they're easy to sharpen and resharpen (and one of the reasons I stick with single-blade heads).

I use a 12 inch file for all my three blades, including the 160 Snuffer. There is some overhang, but I make sure to work on those areas after a few passes with the bulk of the head. After this, and some appropriate stone/strop work, they get good and sharp. Never had a Snuffer I couldn't get sharp enough to make hair fly off my arm with each pass.

I use a 14 in file. They have to be special order from my hardware guy.

For those that use a belt sander, what grit sanding belt do you use?  How is your sander set up?

I use the method 3Rivers demonstrates on how to sharpen the WW. For me it works FANTASTIC on the Snuffers also, even the 160's

Have always used the file/jewel stick/leather method and had great results. Just picked up 1200 grit and 6000 grit water stones to see if I can get them that much sharper.
