Title: Newly returned to traditional and got a question
Post by: USAFdad on February 16, 2011, 03:02:00 PM
Hi to all, Last month I purchased a used Martin Savanha longbow 55# to begin my return to traditional archery. Then I joined this site to get some insight from those who have been where I am now. I love shooting this bow so much my wife tells me I'm obsessed. I can live with that and am starting to agree. I believe this is a reflex/deflex or hybrid style or both. My big question is (and I'm sure you have heard it many times before) should I use carbon or cedar arrows or is it simply a matter of personal preference. The bow came with some CX Heritage carbons, of which some have given their lives during my re-learning phase(which is on going). It's time to restock and need to make a decision. Thanks

Welcome! I use carbon arrows as for me they are very durable and I find them easy to tune.

Opinions abound. I prefer wood, but carbons are great arrows; they are either straight or broken, no in between. Wood takes a bit more care, but to me it is a labor of love. Shoot what appeals to you, and you always can change down the road. Do a search and you will find lots of opinions on wood vs. carbon.

You are not alone, I too have been accused of being obsessed. Try em all and shoot the ones you like.

I like carbon, but it is up to you. Use what you feel shoots the best out of your bow.

Welcome to the Gang

IMHO carbon are probably the best for accuracy and durability, followed by aluminum and then wood.  But I only use wood.  For me the wood is part of why I shoot traditional and not modern.

I enjoy making up a batch or three of wood arrows this time of year.  Wood's what I know so it's what I use.  It's part of the whole sport/hobby/pursuit.  Like trying your own flies for fishing or casting your own round lead balls for muzzleloading instead of buying saboted bullets.

So I've gotta say it's personal preference.

Here is a link to some great info covering arrows and a whole lot more for people just starting out or that want to learn.  Plenty of great reading right here that will save you hours and hours and many dollars in experimenting.

Thanks a bunch for the input. Anybody know if the cedars that caabelas sells are any good? I've got a bunch of gift cards I need to use.

I like the carbons for all of the above reason...but it's really a personal preference for most.
