Title: How does a Bowyer do it ????
Post by: coaster500 on February 16, 2011, 02:20:00 PM
I am without doubt a nut when it comes to bows and beautiful wood...I marvel at some of the creations from some of Tradgang's own bowyers.

I was just looking in the sponsor's classifieds and saw a link to the Journeyman site for stock bows.

My question is How  do you built a bow as beautiful as this and sell it for $350 !!!

This is one of the stock bows...

XS Recurve (Prototype) 52" 52# @ 28" Myrtle w/ Tiger Myrtle veneers.  Black Phenolic and Maple accents  LH $350.00

Having two builds on the works I am soooooo happy this one was Left Handed !!!!

Barry, you're right but I can and will obsess  :)

Just seems to me I've bought some bows that depreciated more in the first year than this one cost new !!!

Thanks guys, the bows shown are some of the prototype bows I built and tested to get to the final design.  They all shoot great...just ended up tweaking a few things here and there. Just trying to cover some of the design and prototyping costs.  I can't keep them all   :)

All a bowyer does is assemble the bow after estimating the draw weight, length, etc, shapes it, sands it and applies the finish.  The beauty came from the wood.  God does all the work there, the bowyer does the easy part.

You're right Mike but you Bowyers assemble God's creations in the right order, I on the other hand end up with extra parts and a mess   :knothead:

I'm sure there is something wrong with that bow. Oh its left handed!!!!! Thats the reason for the price , He cut the window on the wrong side.
God Bless you all and have a great day.

Sometimes it's best to just ignore the grass on other side of the fence.

That certainly looks to be a nice bow for the price.

Generally, I believe one gets what they pay for. Most cheaper bows have quick finish jobs, tips that have uneven string grooves or slap on tip overlays...and poor glue joints.

I am not wishing to offend anyone, it has just been my observation with cheap bows I have seen.

That said...That does NOT seem to be the case with that bow. I have not seen or shot that bow, but from the pictures I can see he certainly has a lot of time invested in it and that bow was put together by someone that appreciated detail...as it certainly appears to be well crafted.

I do understand his reasoning though. It is a lefty prototype and he wants to minimize losses and pay for some testing.

Looks like someone will get a nice bow for a great price.

I know I could have asked much more for the bow, and normally charge about twice that for a new custom.  Please don't think that I found a miracle way to produce a bow like that and sell them for that price...that's just not the case.  Like I said before, these bows were prototypes used for design and testing.  That Myrtle bow in particular was never meant to have the I-beam in the riser showing through the shelf side...oops!  I know it's only a cosmetic issue, just not something I would sell at full price.  Again, it is just not possible to build a bow like, that or even close to that, for $350. I just wanted to recover some of the testing, material and tooling costs...that's all!
I feel like I maybe have offended a few of the other bowyers on this site for selling a bow like that (cheap)and that was never my intent.  All of these guys are extremely talented individuals who work incredibly hard to make a living a being a bowyer...and deserve every penny they get for there effort.  These guys are the best of the best and I have the utmost respect for each and every one of them!

I am going to remove that particular bow from my site and just set it aside for the St. Judes auction.  If it sells for more...it will all be for the kids!

Absolutely not...at least not me. I completely understand. You have a left handed prototype. You haven't offended me at all. I think it is a nice looking bow at a great price.   :clapper:

You sure didn't offend me bud!

To say that cheap bows are built poorly, as was stated earlier in this thread, is not very accurate either.  Guys just starting to sell bows often produce a very fine product, but can't ask what the well known bowyers do.  Once thier name is common, and they have quite a few satisfied customers spreading the good news, they normally can raise prices some.

Jared,

You shouldn't feel that way at all. Almost every bowyer I have spoken to has at some point sold a proto or demo at a lower cost than a customer order. I personally think it's a great way by you to get your product out.

he should feel like he offended anyone. he stated it was a early design and wanted to get something from materials.  my bow i bought wasnt much and shoots awsome. i got it cheap because the bowyer is still tweaking his design. his customs will cost alot more then i paid for one of his early models.  there a few bowyers on here that sell bows cheap because they didnt come out as good or they didnt get a wieght mark the customer wanted.
