At least that's the way I feel about. Brian Wessel has shipped a very personal bow that's due through my door tomorrow. It's no ordinary bow and certainly meets my definition of "custom made". My father is very ill these days. It's likely that he and I will never share a fall day afield again.
Brian has put together a bow for me that contains a momento from my Dad's last successful buck bow hunt, a hunt that I shared with him. I cut a cross section of the small buck's antler and carved it into an arrowhead shape which Brian inlaid into the new bow's riser. Dad and I loved to hunt from cedar trees and blinds which happens to be what the bow limb veneers are made of, eastern red cedar. There will more than a few memories attached to this bow.
I will be posting several photos in the next few days.
Can't wait to see the pictures, and it sounds like IT is a very special bow...
sorry to here about your pops, congrats on the bow those some great looking bows Brian builds
He sure does a great job!As far as i'm concerned the best looking, shooting, handling bow out there. He showed me the arrowhead you carved Gary,That will be special forever. Can't wait to see the pic's. of the cedar veneers. He was talking about them a while back. It's nice being his neighbor.Super good guy! He paid me to say that.Haha
Special it is and always will be... cherish your pops and the time you have with him... think I'll drop by my dad's for some quality time tonight.
God bless you and your family Gary.
Look forward to see'n the bow....just love red cedar, and the antler arrow head will make it special!!
That's way beyond special. Sure makes me miss my dad.
Make more memories while you can.
Can't wait to see it Gary. Say hi to your Dad for me.
Ohh boy, I'm excited for this one! The bow and the stories should be passed through generations of your family!
Thats a very special bow indeed. Enjoy the time you have left. Thanks for sharing,
Enjoy the time you have left with your father.
I lost my dad about a year ago. When I was cleaning out his room, I found a cheap old pocket knife that he always carried. I now keep it in my pocket all the time. I have better quality knives, but I always want "his" knife with me.
I know the Tall Tines will be even more special to you as the years go by.
There's nothing better than carrying a bow with true significance behind it. I'm sure it will bring you many special moments... and memories!
Really looking forward to seeing pics of this bow!
Very cool. I lost my dad a few years back. He was 54. It's tough.
Wow, sounds like Brian is doing something really special for ya Gary. Sorry to hear about your Dad being so ill. Look forward to the pics.
This bow is priceless.
How wonderful!
This is one of those threads that reminds me why I love Trad bowhunting! I can't wait to see your bow, and I will pe praying for your dad and family.
Can't wait to see it! What a powerful statement of your love for your father :campfire:
ps Got a peak of this month's cover of TBM. You outdid yourself AGAIN fellow Murray State grad.
Seems every bow that Wessel guy puts out is pretty special. I can't wait to see how the pictures come out when a pro takes them. I am always ashamed my pictures don't do any justice to the bows he has made for me.
Thanks "MSU Mike":^) and to everyone else for your nice comments. The turkey in the the April/May TBM cover was tagged last spring. I have some big plans for the bow, no doubt; hopefully I can take another bird this spring with the new Tall Tines. If the mail man cooperates I will have some bow photos to post tomorrow night!
That certainly does sound special Gary! Sorry to hear the news of your father.... I can't imagine. Great idea with the carving in the bow, I'm sure it'll be a meaningful touch. You`ve got me pumped about these pix...can`t wait!....Ryan
Thanks Ryan, maybe I can carry it in Manitoba one day.
Yea Gary ,really looking forward to seeing this.I want to do the same sort of thing for my dad,hes in a old folks home now and all his hunting is through me.
Very sorry to hear about your father, but, He will always know how much you love him. To have his son request a special bow for both of you says it all.
Gary, sorry to hear about your father,I have just lost mine.Enjoy every moment you can with him.
Still waiting for today's mail delivery. Tic, tic, tic . . .
:campfire: :coffee: Where is that mail person!!
The bow is HERE, has been shot, and I'm getting ready to quickly post some photos. I took the bow out of the box, attached the limbs, set the brace in the middle of the range suggested by Brian, placed a piece of tape at the same nocking point as some of my other bows . . . and got LUCKY!. My 340 Axis arrows tipped with 250 gr. FPs flew on target at 15 yards. My second arrow flew true and smacked the nock of the first arrow so hard that I was sure that it broke it. I've never had a bow shoot this good, this quickly, right out of the box. Photos on the way.
A special bow for sure!
:dunno: Where's the beef? :D
Here ya go. I'll put them in more than one post.

The riser is Brazilian Rosewood with Myrtle accents. Limb veneers are Eastern Red cedar.
That is an awesome bow with some great memories.
Magnificent.
I can't imagine what this bow means, and will mean to you, but I am struck by how fitting a tribute it is to the days afield, and the love, shared by a father and son.
You have my payers and best wishes.
Killdeer
wow very nice
Unreal! Those limbs, with the contrasts and knots, as well as the carving....WOW! That's gotta be a keeper. And to know it shoots as well as it looks. Congrats!
Thanks for the kind words Killie. The bow has stayed in the same room with me ever since it arrived . . . I can't seem to take my eyes off of it.
Gary what a fitting tribute! I get the feeling in the years to come it will mean even more to you than it does today. It is just a stunning piece of art with alot of love tied to it, and I imagine, strong medicine. It's just awesome man :campfire:
wow, that is a great looking bow. It is also a great tribute to you dad!!!
That is a beautiful bow.!
Memories making memories very special indeed.
Thanks for posting Gary. I'm Glad that a special bows seems to fit you so well. Good luck hunting bear with it along with your son. Three generations so-to-speak. Mike
Beautiful woods. Good luck with it.
We're gonna try Mike. Thanks brother.
That is such an amazing bow! I would be afraid to hunt with something that beautiful and has so much meaning, but I imagine you won't let it sit on the rack an collect dust. Thank you for sharing.
It is born to hunt and to share memories, stunning woods.
Very classy Gary. I bet your Dad will look down proudly.
Very good looking bow Gary! I really like the grain of the sight window and the color variations in the red cedar are very nice. The antler arrowhead is a very cool touch.
We lost Dad (6 of us kids)2 months before he was to retire from 45 years on the RR back in 1996. He was only 62 years old. He and I had big plans. A lot of fish got a pass because of his passing.
Dad didn't bowhunt. He thought a deer would have to be "tame" to kill with a bow as killing one with a rifle (when there weren't many deer when he deer hunted)was such a feat. I remember when I was a young bowhunter Dad would always call several kin when I "killed another deer with that bow". Some hunters always think about tracking, skinning, and the taxidermist right before they take a gimmee shot on a nice deer. In those days I would think, "Dad's going to be on the phone". Yep, it was fun being his celebrity from time to time. He was and remains mine always.
Thanks for giving us some insight into your father's life Roy. Special memories indeed. I'm sure that many here can relate to what you said. Many.
My Dad is still here but suffers from vascular dementia, which turned much worse about a year ago. Things became very noticable when he began having trouble with executive functioning, as he always had a brilliant mind. Dad was a technical specialist, a published writer, and community organizer. In the field he was a natural; watching him set up a treestand was like viewing a skilled trapeze artist . . . a "monkey in a tree". Now he has lost virtually all of his memories of our hunts together which spanned 40 years.
When the Tall Tines arrived in the mail yesterday I took a chance that he might remember something and decided to show the bow to him. I described the hunt when he had taken the buck that produced the antler that was now - at least part of it, in the bow's riser. When my mother came by he pointed to the new bow and said "I helped make that bow."
Fantastic......the shelf is on the wrong side, but still fantastic  a great tribute!!
that bow is amazing looking. im real sorry to here about your father, thats a great tribute for sure and you will always be able to look at that bow and think of all the good memories you two had together.

Sorry for the circumstances but what an awesome tribute!
Gary what your Dad said was worth every penny. "I helped make that bow" is just awesome. That bow should be a real shooter for sure with a very special meaning. Thanks for taking us along Gary.
Yep, Gary I'm afraid you might need to get a perm marker and document that quote, "I helped make this bow" Dad
Wow Gary you werent kidding. What a beautiful bow. Very, very special. Best wishes hunt'n with her.

I definitely do that.
Gary, thanks for not only posting pics of a beautiful specail bow but giving us an insight into the good history between you and that most special of hunting partners , your Dad.
Cheers Mate .
Very nice bow and tribute.
Touching tribute to your Dad. I imagine your bow will carry a lot of good medicine.
Have a good bowhunt,
Dusty
Thanks again to everyone for all of your kind words. This thread is yet another example of why I prefer to work in the traditional "industry" rather than for companies and individuals who put profit and pursuit of "celebrity" over passion. I discovered a long time ago that those who seek extreme challenge and have a true sense of history are my "comrades at arms", so to speak. Simply put, you all "get it".
By the way, I just finished tuning my new bow which took perhaps 5 minutes. No kidding, the bow was grouping bare shafts quicker than any bow I've ever set up. It was if it was saying "Let's end this foolishness I'm ready to go hunting!"
I forgot to mention how well the bow matched up with the accessories I had on standby, all made by TG sponsors, the new Kanati angle quiver, Art Vincent armguard and side quiver, plus a new set of custom wraps made by OneStringer (with my "Fred Bear Fletchings". They all look great. Heck, I guess I need to post at least one more photo showing it rigged with all of the TG sponsor stuff:^)!
Unbelievable beauty!
Mine TT is coming up on the list soon, but you're making me anxious. That's a beautiful bow and I know it means a lot to you. Here's to your Dad.
Amen, that bow is Holy !!!
Phenomenal bow.. prayers for you and your family.

WOWZEER! Great combo and pics!
Looks awesome Gary and I love that fletching.
Absolutely stunning!!! He "Brian" is the man.Love that eastern red cedar.Wow!!!
Gary, that is really special. Best wishes to your Dad, I am sure it will bring a smile to his face.
I took the bow next door for Dad to see, assuming that he wouldn't remember our hunt. I described the hunt to him, saying that we were bowhunting together when he took the buck that produced the antler carving now in the riser of my new bow. He didn't remember any specifics of that day, but when my mother walked up to us he pointed and said "I helped make this bow." I think I have a quote that needs to be written on the bow.
Fantastic looking bow, enjoy!
"I helped make this bow", and he did..
