Title: Strings
Post by: matts2 on February 15, 2011, 09:28:00 AM
I picked up a string from my longbow and then I noticed that the package was marked "recurve".  I didn't realize there was a difference in strings between recurve and longbows.  What is the difference?  This string I got in a basic 14 stand dacron I ordered from 3 Rivers.  I cant use it for this longbow, but was planning on using it on my next one.  Is there any reason why a string like this can't be used on a longbow?

Thanks
Matt

I'm no expert but I believe the only difference is length. For a recureve you order a string 3" shorter than the AMO length of the bow and for a longbow it is 4" shorter. I don't think strand count has anything to do with recurve or longbow.

Good luck

If the string is made to AMO specs, the length is the same for a longbow or recurve.  Some folks do go 3" shorter for longbows and 4" shorter for recurves though.

Probably the difference is in the loop size--recurves generally need larger loops.  It should be fine for a longbow, unless the loop is so big it won't stay in the grooves.

The only other thing might be the loop sizes. I am new at this string making thing but the guy who taught me mentioned if a bow has thinner limbs (like a LB would) you might make the upper loop smaller....

The difference is the loop size, as LB and Bill say.

If it is a 3 Rivers string, it would be a 15 strand, if dacron, and is measured as string length, not AMO.

It could be used on the longbow, if it is the same length you need. As for the loops, the top might be to large to stay in the nock. If so, you could wrap with serving or floss to close the loop, for a better fit!

Thanks for the info guys.  I will watch the loop size and adjust if needed.
