Title: Proper way to throw out a broken bow.
Post by: Todd Diehl on February 13, 2011, 09:16:00 PM
Went stumping with my son today and I broke his upper limb unstringing his bow when we were done. It's a bow that I had made nearly 20 years ago by the late Sonny Iman. How do I give this bow it's proper send off?

Can you fix it up so it can be a wall hanger?

You need a priest a rabbi a minister and a virgin. Then light a fire, sacrifice a goat, throw the bow into the fire and go to a bar with the priest, rabbi, minister, and the virgin. JUST KIDDEN     :goldtooth:    .

I think the boy gets to pick whatever new bow he wants. And he should keep the broken one as a reminder not to let dad shoot his bows.

A friend of mine had a custom knife made, using some of the riser as the handle. It was a great idea.

I had that bow made before I was married with the hopes I would have a child to share it with. I have loaned the bow out many times to friends with sons and finally in '06 I got a son of my own to go stumpin with. It's funny how bows are such a part of us isn't it?

I'd keep it for the memories.

This idea gets my vote. After hearing about all of that background, and after your last post...can you imagine actually "sending it off"? The knife idea is a good one too.

Hang it up some where you can look at it once in a while, and remember what it meant or means to you! Then go find the bar where the priest, rabbi, minister and the virgin went and ............   :nono:

brake up a bunch of cedar shafts to use for kindling to start the fire that you use to burn it.

I'd go with making something from the wood in the bow for you and your son. Matching knifes would be  good. Talk it over with your son and get his feelings also. Sounds like a lot of good memories to be reflected on down the road.

How busted? I ripped the tip off one of my bows. I ripped it 3". A friend of mine, who is a bowyer, was able to fix it. You sure it is beyond repair?

Can you post a picture of the break?  i have done some incredible saves on bows that most guys would feed to the fire. i'd be more than glad to try and save it for you if it's possible...  Kirk

If beyond repair. Cut the limbs off out from the fades sand to a 45 degree angle and make a barn door handle out of the riser.

+1 more for the knife handles. Or like somone else said, make it a 2 piece. Although the knife handles will last a lifetime and be very special to you and your son. Having the only 2 knife's in the world that match each other. jm2c

If it can't be fixed the knife idea sounds good.

Gotta side with Dave on this one.
You should take the bow and lay it in a small wooden boat. Inside the boat should be this bow's arrows, quiver, arm guard, and tab/glove. Don't forget a picture of you and the bow to be included in the stash.  Be sure to leave room in the boat for a virgin maiden from town as well.
The boat should then be doused in lamp oil and cast off upon a lake at sunset.
A arrow set with flame will then be launched out to the craft.
The bow will then be sent to the halls of your fathers and will be waiting for you for all time.

I second the matching knife handles for you and the boy if possible. If not, at least one knife handle?

My friend that had the custom knives made, actually took it one step further. Since it was a Bear recurve, the coin from the bow was added to the knife sheath...unbelieveably impressive.Probably the finest knife/sheath combo I've ever seen.

funny stuff, it's not human - never had great attachment to a bow, just use it for hunting and fun, I'd just get another one.

All great ideas. MAKE something with it!!  The absolute coolest thing I've EVER seen was a "coffee table" made of blown up Bear recurves.  I've also seen bow racks, wine racks, chair legs, etc. all made from "dead" bows.

That is a very disrespectful response to this thread. Sonny Iman was a good man who was very respected in Primitive Archery circles.

If possible, Save by repairing(glue/wood dowels/wrap) wrap other end to match. Especially if not a high poundage bow. Display if nothing else. Recycling wood to make something else is special too!
