Title: Duh, I Pulled a Dumb One
Post by: bigugly1 on February 08, 2011, 10:15:00 PM
No damage done but what a dummy. I got to thinking my arrows were to light and decided to put some weight at the front. Well I have some insert and heavier tips ordered as my arrows only weigh in at 357g and Hoyt says with my bow I should be around 410g. So I went on a household mission and came up with 240v wire just crimp the casing and it should stay snug right, wrong! First shot I thought arrow snapped! Well on the floor I find my knock with wire pushed right up inside of it...lol Guess that's not going to work! I tried another arrow and I think it was actually to front heavy as it was all over the place. Oh well guess I'll just keep shooting what I got and wait for points and inserts to arrive.

Don't let failure, or personal property damage, get in the way of tinkering!  Some times it works, and some times it just makes good reading!

Yikes!

I've never used weight tubes, home-made or otherwise. You've got me wondering if an internal weight like that can pop out the nock end before the arrow is away from the face and strike the archer in the eye?

Never had a problem with wood.   :goldtooth:   Safety first.

I use the weight tubes from 3Rivers, work very well with my MFX 500 carbons. Currently using 3gr per inch, going too try some heavier 5gr and 8gr tubes to up my weight. If installed full length, I have not had any problems. If I try to use the shorter pieces, I tend to lose nocks also.

Good Luck

I used weight tubes back in the day and could never get used to them. It seemed as though my arrows never flew properly with tubes in. I've found adding weight to the front much better. I'm sure they work for some guys just not for me.

I just did a couple with rope in them.  Not bad at short ranges so far.  Could work for you until you get some inserts and point.

Years ago out of desperation I put #4 nails in the front of Cabela maverics to make my broadheads behave themselves. Had to reduce the head diameters to glue on the heads, but it worked.

I have used plastic weedeater cord. I crimped it every 3" and it stays in the arrow very well. I have tinkered around with adding weight with this type tube, inserts, various weight points, etc. etc. etc.  I just don't get good arrow flight. At my draw length I am shooting about 53# and I shoot right at 450 gr. total weight, which is right at 8.5 gr/#. If I can't kill it with that set up, then I am a little scared to be hunting it.

I screwed all thread into the back of my insert. And it has worked so far.

Gotta do what ya gotta do.  I'm a fan of the weed eater chord.

Welcome to the club! I have added weight up front on carbons by cutting the head off a 2"or so nail and wrapping electrical tape around it till it fits snug in the arrow, then wrap tape on the other end of the nail till you get the weight you want. then shove it in from the nock end till it hits the insert. Havent had 1 move yet. Whatever works.

Can we say "slide hammer"?  That's what happened when I used weight tubes, pushed the nocks right out! Jason

I took all thread, melted lead around it and used those for a while. Result: I now use brass inserts and heavier b.h.'s

Tinkering is cool but...

I started off with weight tubes full length, and they were fine unless I hit something hard, such as a rock or solid stump.  In that case, the tube would pop out the back and I'd lose a nock, which also means I left a piece of plastic out in the woods.  No bueno.  So now I use 5 to 8 inch tubes up front, crimped and glued when I can, and am having much better results.

Tried the weedwhacker cord, good so far.
