Title: Abowyer BH and adapters
Post by: NBK on February 08, 2011, 01:15:00 AM
What size adapters are you using for Abowyer BH's?  Did a search and read that the Abowyers take 5/16 adapters?  Would this work with my Beman ICS bowhunters?  I love using the 160gr. Snuffers w/ the 42gr.  11/32 aluminum adapters for whiteails making them about 200gr. up front, but I'm getting ready for an elk hunt this fall and am going with the Abowyer Brown bear heads (175gr) and would really like to keep my weight of these around 200gr so that I can switch back and forth as needed.  Thanks.

Abowyer has a titanium insert that might fit your needs.

I bought some of those titanium adapters and I never used them....I wasn't sure what they were for as they seemed way too small for the furrel of the Abowyers...it went way up inside the furrel.

I have mine mounted on 11/32 long aluminum adapters....no problem.

I have mine on the Aluminum adapters also.  They fit nicely on the SS adapters that Kustom King sells also if you need more weight.

Terry,

Did you apply the wax to those heads to help keep the edge while in your quiver? Silly question but do you peel it off before shooting it at an animal or will it just come off on it's own at impact?

I have a bunch of Larry's broadheads and have them mounted on 11/32 aluminum adapters, 11/32 steel adapters, and six are mounted on Larry's titanium adapters.

Terry, you're right - the titanium adapter does go a bit up inside of the ferrel of the broadhead.  The result of that, however, is that the external portion of the insert on the end of the shaft of your carbons snugs up nicely just inside of the ferrel.  Makes for the slickest transition from ferrel to carbon arrow shaft I've ever seen.  Give-em a try!

I use the 75gr steel adapters on brown bears for one of my elk set ups.   They end up 250gr.  A little more weight never hurts on elk.  If you are dead set on sticking to 200 gr.  Eclipse looks like they have a new werewolf single bevel solid one piece that is 200gr for the same price as Abowyers.  I know Terry loves aluminum, but remember bull elk ribs are tough!  I have seen some pretty crazy damage hitting them.

Montana, I use 100gr. brass inserts with the head giving me 300gr up front, 23%FOC and a 620gr arrow. Out of my 57#bow drawing close to 29" I think that might work well on elk. Hopefully I'll get a chance to put it to the test! Thanks for the info.

NBK, thats sounds like exactly the ticket. Now hit em in the lungs broadside and you'll be a happy man.  Where are you thinking of hunting?

My brothers and I are taking my Dad most likely to Colorado.  We don't have preference points anywhere else.  Trying to line up a quality drop-camp.  We don't need huge bulls, we'd just like to be in an area with good numbers so we can start cutting our teeth!  Our bottom line is the four of us around a fire, in the mountains... mission accomplished.

Terry,

What are you using to mount those heads on those adapters?

Looks like it could be JB Weld?

Thanks.

How does the JB weld hold up?

Is it brittle?

JB Weld has NEVER failed me on the HIT inserts and I do a lot of stump shooting with that setup.  I just never thought to use it on the broadhead/adapter joint!

Sometimes it takes a while for things to penetrate this thick skull    :D
