Title: Who considers themselves a toxophilite?
Post by: Swiftspeed10 on February 07, 2011, 10:41:00 PM
a toxophilite is apparently a lover and expert of bows and archery, I never knew this, I one day hope to be a true toxophilite!!

Yep. Toxophilist, lepidopterist, phelatilist, numismatist & occasional ornithologist.

Google them    ;)

The definitions I've seen don't connotate being an expert as much as a lover of archery.  I think we all would qualify!   :jumper:

I am. But I've never heard of it being tied to being an expert. An expert, I am not! I've got bunches to learn. Doubt I'll ever get there.

But, I'm workin' on it. It just never ends.

"Toxophilus" is an ancient Greek word and means the friend the lover of archery, the man that want to learn all about it and lives with bows and archery in his heart.no need to be an expert just to have great love about it.i personally think that all TradGangers are truly Toxophilus!!

I do love the Bow and everything that comes with it. The tuning, the making of arrows, the shooting, the learning of new ways and techniques,  as well as my favorite the Hunt.

Sounds like something you could get beaten/arrested for declaring around here. Of course, after you explained it was a Greek word you'd be shot...

Just kidding...Kind of...

I think that declaring yourself a taxophilite could put you on the homeland security watch list, the no fly list, and it could damage your credit.  I am a musician, just a harmless musician.  A guitarphilite.

Seriously though, all of our camulitive lifetimes wouldnt be long enough for me to become an expert. But I still dearly love watching an arrow fly.

I always thoght that if I couldnt hunt I wouldnt shoot any more. But, today I shoot and look forward to the hunt. If I couldnt hunt I would probaly still shoot and look back on the hunts and memories.

First time I saw this was in Saxton Pope's "Hunting with the Bow and Arrow." It seems that he was describing Latins, Peruvians and the Irish as being as far from toxophilites as they cold be. (:

I am too fat to be a toxophilite, I am more like a toxophilheavy. Some how my front got bigger and I am not pregnant.
I met a toxophilite once, he said "Your bows and your arrows are simply gorgeous and you must tell me how you coordinated your wool ensemble, it really really works for you."

I don't think there is a true expert because that would mean you know it all and even the experts keep learning new things that they didn't
