We had a warm spell here today, it got up to about 37 degrees. Anyway, it reminded me of that season known as Spring. Spring has come to mean hog hunting for me and it cant come soon enough. I cant wait to put a stalk on a big old nasty boar hog in May and I can just see him now in my mind. How bout some pics to give me something to look forward to.

Matt Schuster killed this one this summer. Don't know what it weighed cause we had to quarter it up to get it out.
This was one nasty boar. He rolled some 40#ers out of his way. Seems like he was close to 200 but I can't really remember for sure
I may have to report Biggies post of Matt's kill. No pics of Rinos are allowed! That is a BIG pig....
:bigsmyl:
Matts pig is always the first one that comes to mind when I think of big hogs. :notworthy:
That's one big SOB (Side of Bacon) :D
speaking of big hogs; where was the opening footage of "The Bowhunters of TradGang" shot? There were a bunch of bigguns' in that clip!
This is the largest bow killed hog I've seen on a scale. The late Jerry Pierce and a boar weighing in at 225 pounds taken in SC. This photo doesn't quite do the boar justice. Mark Viewig and I floated it most of the way out, but needed some help when we beached it. :) This boar was all shoulders, long bristly ruff, head and teeth...a most impressive specimen.

Not big, but a nice 155 pound sow. Her boyfriend was pretty big, but I shot over him while retrieving her. He was pretty upset about the deal and reluctant to leave.

Wow!!!! Them pigs really have to get it on to continue populating with you hog slayers stalking the woods. :notworthy:
Who says Biggie has killed a big hog? :dunno:
Don't start Joebuck..........you'll lose.
you haven't even broke 200 lb club yet? You forgot who took some of your pics!
Marty and I have killed more big hogs in our sleep than you have even seen....If you would come around more often, you'd see how many 200#ers I have. But no, you had to move away to Mississippi so no-one could see what you're up to.
Got you there JoeBuck...and I bet you never hunted deer in your bloomers either..RC
Posting a pic of your friends hogs doesn't count as yours. Your still in the bush league. don't make me tell the story of the one I killed that took your soul?
He can't back it Up RC....just tap,tap ,tap...........now Marty...He's the real hog Cowboy
I`m just funn`n them two . They been my heros for a long time. But I did wear Biggie out at a bow shoot once.Come to think of it I believe he missed the hog target....RC

John at Tusker shot this one about a month ago with his new Huntsman longbow and a Tusker Aztec. It scaled at 376 pounds. Maybe not a fair comparison to these US brutes, he shot it in Oz while hunting a banana plantation.

I weigh 300 lbs in these pics....I know I outweigh both of these by a generous margin.
Nice hogs guys. I try to shoot hogs in the 50-100 lb range, better eating and just as much fun to hunt.

This ones about 225. He is laying on my thighs to keep him upright for the pic. This is the largest in weight i have killed to date.

This one was bigger but smarter, he would not let me close enough.

The dog isn't a yellow lab but a Southern Black Mouth Cur. They are great dogs too, friendly to humans but sure love to hunt hogs. He was a bay dog and not a catch dog and it sure was his hog.
Great boars, lads (and a few immense sows!)!

some great hogs for sure.
Joey, you tell about the one that you think took my soul and I'll tell the one about that kid from 4H,
Besides, can't you kill one unless Marty guides you?
Izzy, Joey can't kill anything but the common black ones. He doesn't realze the trophy quality of the calico hog. Very nice!
I've always said RC can hit the small targets. He's just smart enough to know that they are easy to pack out and they eat better 8-)
I wish Marty would guide me but your always cuddled up with him in the feeder stand named after you. if I was u, I would hang around RC more and learn how to close the deal with some dirt under my feet.
You two fella's are highjacking this thread with your quarrels- I say keep showing pictures cause they are worth a thousand words!!!!
Mint what skin pattern is on the bow in your first pic? Looks nice!
Keep the pictures coming fellas, I am getting amped for April!!!
Someone asked Izzy if he is hog hunting in NY? Probably not unless he goes to a farm, He is going south This spring!
My only big hog. Only 204lbs weighed on the "Dudes" scales. I'm just a rookie pig hunter, but I think that in May, I'll be surronded by a pack of seasoned veterans. Maybe if I sit back and listen, I'll learn alot of valuble information. DB
Nice one, DB!!!!!
I'd also mention that only ONE hog in those photos was treestand hunted- the rest were slipped up on spot and stalk!!
Longbowkid, I'm pretty sure those little hogs on the left of that cooler picture were mine- I am pretty sure you and your brother's hogs were a little bigger than those
Looking forward to your return this year!!! I saw some of your woodcock hunting pics- awesome stuff!
Batman-nice hog, but your make-up is running.
Killing hogs on the ground is fun Ray, my lease down here is not condusive to doing that-talk about thick! Right now there is a carpet of acorns the likes that I haven't seen in years! I've had 2 sets of hunters(friends) down in the last couple weeks and the hogs are so full of acorns that they walk through piles of corn and don't put even their nose to the ground. I had guys wantin to come hunt and told em not to waste their time this year. Maybe they'll dry up in a month, but they were still falling this past weekend! We went to the "go to" the hog method last weekend (four-legged style) and caught some huge ones! One was 380lb with 4 inch teeth! Can't show pic's on this site. 3 weeks ago my son beat the dogs into the palmetto patch and found out a boar hog is nothing to take lightly. He got thrown over the hogs back and it was coming back for more when the dogs turned it. Be careful on a wounded hog fella's! He's got a scar he won't forget on his leg.
Marty, why dont you hunt the acorn stands? Are they too plentiful to capitalize on any one locale? The most hogs I saw at Rays last year were in the big acorns, I think they are chestnut oaks. Not certain. Hope your sons alright.
I've shot some big pigs in the past but the last few years I much prefer shooting them in the 50-150# range myself, big hogs are just too much trouble to deal with and since I like to eat them, the smaller ones are usually better anyway and to me a pig is a pig, so not into the "trophy" aspect of hog hunting, I just like to shoot hogs!
Yep Izzy- First of all-my feeders are all in the oaks-miles of em. But the oaks are also in the palmetto's ,sooooo they don't have to even move. Tried stalking but it's like walking on dry cereal. Got pic's at feeders-but all at nite.Usually I'll get 500 or more pics a week at feeders-gettin maybe 80.Definitely prefer natural food.
Marty's son leg
(http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i150/jmb1221/michael.jpg)
That is a nasty wound for sure! I give hogs a lot of respect and I admit to be a little nervous when the big blue boar walked right up to us crouched on the trail in the brush. Hope the leg wound heals fast and gives him no trouble.
Charlie, that is python skin on a Matlock Predator X.
Yowza that wound is nasty. Looks like a big single bevel broadhead wound...sewing up an anterior leg wound is tough with that much gaping. Plus all the crap on those tusks. Hope he's ok Marty and back to chasin' 'em :)
Wow, what a lucky deal that those dogs caught him!
Wow, what a lucky deal that those dogs caught him!
Wow, that's a nasty wound! Hopefully everything heals well!
Here is my biggest... skinny as a rail from chasing sows and was still 205#.
I know what you mean, Marty. Are those live oaks ...or reds and water oaks? Our reds just stopped dropping in January and I've never seen the numbers we saw this year- but no whites or chestnut oak acorns at all.
Yessir- that's a nasty cut. That's why I don't chase them with dogs...they're a lot more docile when not cornered like they are with the pups.
Wow! Glad your son is going to be ok Marty. Gotta love it when the dogs come to the rescue!
I am looking forward to the day I can put an arrow in a hog. :)
.....Or......Am I???!!!
Hope your son has an uneventful and healthy recovery from a cut like that. Keep em coming!

Ray, I had forgotten about that hog. I think that one caused me to take the longest shower I have ever had.
Until this thread, I had never taken any interest in pursueing hogs. I am inspired. Just like turkeys for me - it would appear that any legal hog would just hrill me.

Somehow I missed that pic Rob posted....
That hog is bigger than it looks...and much bigger than Rob thought when he shot it.
Every time I see a pic of that hog I get two feelings....#1 Pure joy of the hunt, the shot and the recovery for me and Rob both. #2 - I want a nap!!! We got in the bed at 2:30 that morning after taking care of Robs two hogs he shot that evening and were out an hour before daylight the next morning....that afternoon we were zonked!!!
Went hunting last weekend and my buddy shot this Sow. She was well over 200 lbs.

Fattest hog I have ever seen. Had over 1" of fat on her hams!

Id bet my bow this one was 250#s. (http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o244/2crazyboys_photos/IMAG0386.jpg)He was long and deep although the pic unfortunately failed to show it well.

Wow! That biggun has to be 3+ live! Nice hogs grabwad.

Here's a little secret....me thinks your are going to see a few more pics in Feb/March.....
I know some guys that are going hunting ... :readit:
Here's a few more from Australia. Killed these a few years back on my buffalo hunt. Used my buff setup - 75lb Black Widow, 160 gr STOS on a double aluminum shaft (1716 inside of a 2020) for an 1100 grain arrow.
Pig 1 - slipped up on this guy in the tall grass - 10 yard shot, about a 10 ft recovery:
Pig 2 - caught this one sleeping in a pond - 20 ft shot, another 10 ft recovery:
Pig 3 - slipped into my buffalo carcass the next day and there were two boars fighting over it - this guy won....then he lost...10 yard shot, 30 yard recovery.
I'd travel back to Australia just to hunt big pigs - its a blast over there!
Heading to South TX in February, hoping to run across a big pig or three down there....
Ryan
I'm taking my friend a Bowyer, Ron Robinson, after this guy on Saturday night. I don't think the picture does this one any justice.

I can't remember the last big hog I have shot. I have taken a ton of small to medium ones though. I like the 50-75#ers like Charlie Lamb. They eat way better than those big 'ol stink nasties!
Got these two since the first of the year (the bottom one weighed 114# and the top one was a little bigger and both were sows):

Cool thread, fellas!
Wow!!! Terry, that coon eating hog is pretty, looks almost pure Russian.

Terry..... yes i was on a ranch in TN, (wilderness Hunting Lodge) Great time Great people
Im BRAND NEW to traditional archery, like most it pulled me in and I'm never gonna look back javascript:void(0) I have not been able to hunt with a stick bow yet. I shot those two with my wheelie bow.

If your ever out this way send me a PM.
callofthewild ... they are same great pigs ...
Were they bowshot ?
Ben... thanks, theres nothing quite like a rush of a boar hunt :)
To answer your question.. yes they were shot with a bow. Im brand new to traditional archery. I have not been hunting with trad archery tackle yet, still learning and fine tuning. So i thought i would make my first post here on the site of a couple boar i hunted with my wheelie bow.
(Ever since i picked up an old Bear Cub recurve I have never thought to going back to compound...It just feels right to hunt with a wooden bow and arrow... hard to explain) Soon i hope to obtain a Hill longbow
Ross....your pics were removed as we only allow trad bowkill pics here....and also, we don't allow canned hunts.
Yours wasn't the only one removed.
I hope you understand and continue to enjoy the site.
Also, guys...I few more were also removed before today....please try and remember the title of the thread....BIG hogs, not medium hogs, not 'the kind I like to eat' hogs, not 'my 1st kill with a so and so' hogs. Lets keep to the title please.
Thanks........ :campfire:
Thanks Terry. Hurry up and hunt em up folks, we need some fresh boss hog pics or Im gonna be feeling some dreaded hog withdrawal symptoms.

QuoteOriginally posted by Ray Hammond:

Around here the dog hunters will often collect the tails when they catch a pig. Sometimes they take his nuts. Other times they notch an ear. It's their way of marking a pig showing its been caught before. I've also seen the dogs bite the tail off or an ear..reckon it could happen to a tail too.
Here is the pic from my trail cam(the drum in this pic is a 30 gallon drum). Ignore the time signature. I lost my cable and remote for resetting the time.

What do you guys listen for when looking for these pigs? I know the basic sign to look for but do they make much noise? When working a creek bed or area where you have found sign....what else can tell you if they are close? Thanks,
We trapped hogs and made barrows out of the smaller boars. Before releasing we docked their tails so they could be identified as barrows, which eat a great deal better than boars. :)
Darwin Morris with a 185# weighed boar taken with a 45# recurve. Darwin has MS but works hard to continue hunting. I've known and hunted with Darwin for about 25 years. MS or not, Darwin is the one I want with me working a blood trail. He is a really good tracker. This boar was down in sight so my services weren't needed. :)
My LORD fellas, these are not hogs....they're American Rhino's. They're HUGE.
I have been chomping at the bit to get out and try my hand at it. Now I'm in Texas, I should be able to give it a try in the next couple of months. I don't know much about it at all so I have to learn by reading and talking to others.
Since a lease is out of the question for me in the near future, I am going to be using the PUBLIC land system here in the great state of Texas. More than likely Granger or San Houston.
I don't know what I'd do if one of these monsters was coming right at me. I hope I have the courage to loose the string and drop one. I LOVE this thread. Thank you all for posting your pics and stories.
Keep 'em coming.
Nalajr
One other question....
What state do you think has the BIGGEST hogs?
Lastly, what country in the world would you guess has the BIGGEST hogs that ordinary people can hunt? By "ordinary" I am talking about those places that let everyday joe hunt on land that doesn't fence them off for only the wealthy to go and "hunt" them.
Thanks again
Nalajr

Me too. No wild hogs in PA, it's on my short list. I'm thinking a nice sidearm is in order in case you get charged after sticking it with a broadhead.
I would guess Russia has the biggest hogs A lot of unspoiled land there still.

Was this hog shot with a trad bow? Was it shot on a preserve?
Awesome hog and pic Sam. Terry, if I remember correctly Pats hog was killed on his own property with a longbow.
Izzy is right, Terry. I shot that one in my plum thicket. In the background you can see my porch and shed and the hog is hanging from the bucket of my tractor. That's my dog that tracked the hog in the wee hours of the morning. No high fence, just barbed wire perimeter fencing that the hogs can cross going from property to property just like alot of parts of Oklahoma. Wrote about it in a post back in April titled something like 'Before and after. My best yet' because I have pics of the hog on trail camera from before I shot it. I shot it with my big jim thunderchild. Beat my next largest by almost 150 pounds. That one was also shot on my property, but with a MOAB back in December of 2010. Here is a pic of that one.
I can attest to Pat having some nice setups on his property. Pat has a very nice chunk of land in Oklahoma. I just hope that he gets some rain there. Great big hogs here guys keep the pics coming.
Dang! haven't checked this thread in a while and there are some monsters that have been added lately. Sam and Pat, those beasts are awesome!
TTT, gotta bring this one back up. :campfire: :coffee:

Hah, just checked this thread out again. Dave, that jacket is the same camo as the hog.
Here is a nice sow that I shot yesterday morning, spot and stalk hunting on a large ranch in texas. I was the same Big Jim Thunderchild that I shot my 400#er with that I posted earlier. I didn't put her on a scale, but I estimate her to be around 225#. My 4th largest hog and my largest sow to date.

I guess I will add a smaller one that I shot in Australia while I am at it. Probably 150-175#.

Post em up fellas.
mine was much smaller than some of these...but he was very, very, very old with a huge head and is by far the UGLIEST pig I have ever seen in the wild. LOL Maybe 145lbs I guess though he looked larger at first and felt heavier after dragging 150 yds through that tall reed grass and pluff mud.
Cutters nearly 3.5 inches long from gumline....just ate first of the bratwurst made from him on Saturday....head being done in Euro Mount.
He had almost NO FAT on him really...muscle, shield and tough hide....very little fat but they had a hard winter so far in Georgia and he was on the far downhill side of his life I think..not sure would have made many more. He was a tough and mean old coot and tried to bite and slash to the dying end.

These are some impressive animals!
Here are 3 more pretty nice ones, taken last month. Ranging from a lean 180 to probably around 250.

600 lbs of hog right there Pat!!! Yikes.
Maybe we can add a few pics next week. We have decided to make the 9 hour run down to Ft Stewart this coming weekend for another 3 days of spot and stalk pigging.
Pat, you know how to kill em big!
Hey Izzy- Getting warmed up for your Wild Things Hunt in a few weeks?
Just got luck on my side. That, and a hunting bow that almost shoots itself.
Nice looking hogs fellas

Jerry Russell recently killed a monster. I hope he adds it to this thread.
Thanks for the pics Pat, great hog and a classy bow.
Good One Pat! Congrats!
Are you hunting some of these in Ok? I know you hunt in Tx, but isn't there hogs in your state as well?
Yes. The 2 on page 18, and the one I just posted were shot on my my property in Oklahoma.
Good to see some Okie's on here!!!
This one was 260 from last April.

Time for some new additions. Hope to add one in March myself.
Thanks for the reminder Izzy! I will add a post or two here after Kzoo this weekend.
Thom
Here's the hog I took March, 2015. No scale, but we figured him to be 175-200 lb. Not huge, but a pretty good pig. Grizzly Instinct 200 gr broadhead on a Surewood Fir shaft from a 50 lb Toelke Whip. Shield was about 1 1/4" thick. He made it about 60 yards.

Dang pat I might just call you the Baconator!!
Great LA hogs there Corey. I was hoping to run into one like that last weekend, but I wasn't too lucky. I have just been lucky to be in some good situations, but I sure do love chasing them.
Congrats Pat! Good lookin hog! Was that with the new bow?
No, Randy
Those pics are from 2015. I just forgot to list them earlier. Hoping to have some new pics in Feb or March, lol
Oh heck, I thought that was the new bow. I guess I should of looked closer!
Some of them earlier hogs were shot with a thunderchild that was like a twin to my new bow.

nice pics Robert...best of luck on them!
Holy cow, Robert! Those are huge. I think you are gonna need another freezer.
Hard to tell how long and tall they are, but I think your weight estimate might turn out to be low.
Congratulations Mr. Kelly.
Been following this thread and it looks like the Lincoln Ranch has some nice big hogs.
You surely have killed a bunch of giants.
I would like to try Lincoln some day.
Good shooting, sir.
Irv
Thanks Irv. I just have been lucky to have had alot of good opportunities. It comes in waves. Right now, haven't haduch hog activity for the last few months, and I don't have any hog hunts planned in TX. I would expect some activity towards March, as the acorns and pecans dwindle but nothing is ever guaranteed. Alot of big hogs in TX and Southern Oklahoma.
:bigsmyl:
Man those are some nice hogs!!!
I never felt like any of my pigs were big enough to be on this thread until I got this one last month.
A few more weeks and I'll try again
Thom
Nice!!!!!!!!!!!
That is a beast of hog, for sure. Congrats

This one was shot at Irv's Hog Camp in South Florida (formerly True south Adventures)
This is Bill Langers largest hog in over 25 years of bowhunting.
The new properties are holding some nice hogs and we are having fun.
Was well over 300#s.
RIP, Izzy!
I hope we can keep this thread going in his memory forever!!!!!!
Bisch
I feel like I have moved out of the dark ages...
Thanks to some great technical hep from my best friend, Priscilla, I have finally posted my first photo from Photobucket to Tradgang.
Yaaa!
Thom,
Looks like you and Bill will have sausage for a year including all the neighbors.
Congratulations to all of you folks for those nice hogs.
Great Memories!
Jeez. That's a fatty.
Oh, good job everyone else also!
Congrats Irv...maybe you can teach me lol. That's a giant hog for sure. I was with Thom Jorgensen when he got his and that one scaled 338lbs. I wonder what Bill's weighed? it looks a little bigger.
HOLY COW! Literally! I think I've seen cows smaller than that beast!!! I love that blonde hide too! Man that is a great looking pig!!! I hope there is a bit of taxidermy or something special going on with that guy!
Irv, mine brought in 120 pounds of sausage. Drop into camp at the Rendezvous and we'll do up a sausage chili or something special!
John, there is something about being one of they guys trying to lift a really big hog onto a tailgate that will stick with ya! Glad you were there to share in that wonderful adventure!
Looks like it's been a good year for us trad bow guys getting into some bigger hogs!
Thom
I'm not sure what that hog weighed for sure?
Did not scale it.
We layed my 62" Blackwidow next to it, from tip of nose to base of tail was over 4 1/2 feet. From tip of nose to tip of tail was longer than the bow.
I had my friend Tom Gauthier with me. He is 27 years old, works in construction and is in great shape. The two of us really worked hard to drag it 200 yards. I've been lucky to have killed several very big hogs, not one of them was I not able to drag out myself. We are still talking about how hard it was to drag!
Thanks again to Irv's Hog Camp for gaining access to land that holds big pigs!
This thread really puts the term HOGS into perspective.
Yes John,
I would be happy to hunt with you any time, teach you what I can for sure.
I know Bill and his friend Tom, had a hard time dragging that hog.
I was not much good because on Jan 14th, I fell and broke two ribs, but mending nicely now.
Irv
Irv
Glad your ribs are finally on the mend!
We were happy to help old friend!
Besides...
When you volunteered over and over to let Tom and Myself come down and hunt whenever and wherever we wanted...
How could we refuse!!!!
A lot cheeper than paying us
Didn't I just read how generous I was on some other thread??
I need to be more careful, don't want folks to think I save all the good hogs for you.
LOL
Just be honest with them Irv...
OK Bill,
Not that I would fib if anyone did ask...you know me...honesty is the ONLY policy.
Since you mentioned it, this is my chance to tell it like it is.
It shouldn't come as a big surprise that those who scout properly first, then spend the most time on stand, usually reap the best rewards.
And I have seen you do exactly that.
I have seen you give up your morning hunts, scouting thru mid day...hunt according to what you have seen, and then sit the long afternoon and evening hours.
I won't give away any of your techniques. Each hunter has his own.
You've hunted pigs for over 25 years, you should know how you want to do it.
And I must say that even when i say, "Sorry Bill...those spots are promised for the next group," you listen.
Because you like fresh spots and so do all the other guys coming after you.
It's cool to have enough places so hunters can get a change of real estate and what I would expect when I go hunting.
