Title: New to me - D/H Ventura
Post by: Mitch-In-NJ on February 05, 2011, 09:04:00 PM
I haven't owned a recurve since I was a kid - been shooting longbows only - but had been thinking about picking one up as a dedicated bowfishing rig.

An old schoolmate I hadn't seen in many, many years is doing some repairs to my house and we got to talking and it turns out he shoots traditional, too.  As it so happened he was going to go to the local shop to put this bow on consignment.

I saved him the trip.  I got the bow and a dozen new woodies for $100.

The bow is in perfect condition and while I am not sure how old it is, I think it's from '87 or '97 based on some info I've gathered on the net.

Anyway, enough background...

Does anyone know the recommended brace height?

Also, any restrictions/preferences on string type or material?

The previous owner hadn't a clue about the bow.

I've searched for threads but came up empty.

Thanks.

I knew a fellow with one quite a while ago. If I remember right, it was 66" and he had it at around 7 1/2".

I just took possesion of a ventura yesterday. Brace is currently just over 7". I ordered a flemish string for it and I will experiment with the brace height a little. I also have a 1972 DH Hunter that I have the brace height set at 7 3/4" and that works really well.

Great bows. That was my first trad bow. I had the brace height between 71/2 - 8". Enjoy your find.

I got one too. I keep mine @ 7 1/2 on the brace height. Nice bows. You got a heck of a deal. I like mine. Gary

I have 3 of them. I love their long riser/short limb design.

They are incredible bows. Good luck with it. Does your bow have white glass or black glass.

Does it have a red riser stripe?

Thanks for the feedback.

The bow has white class that has yellowed a little.  It also has the red stripe, bound by lighter, tan stripes down the riser.  The serial is HV 7213 and "VENTURA" is hand written.

It has AMO info so it's post '68.

It also looks like there were two stickers on it above the hand writtien info as the yellowing is less pronounced.  One was round and the other rectangular.  The rectangular one is about a 1/4" high and nearly the width of the limb.

It doesn't matter a whole lot to me when it was made, but if pics will help identify it I can charge up my camera battery and post some later.

Be nice to know how old it is.
