I had the Monty Browning bowhunting grizzly story in one of my old trad bowhunter mags but i have lost it..prob 3 or 4 years ago...does any one know how i can get a copy of the story or how to find it..thanks Scott it will make the hair stand on end when you read it..
Yea, why would a guy with that much woods savy walk back in on a gut pile in Grizzly country without his 44 mag?
I asked Monte that very question and he looked at me and smiled and said... I just never thought about it till it was too late.
Its a great story
Get the Compton Record book. It has Monty's story as well as others. It is an awesome book, organization, and fine group of folks to boot.

I will look for it tonight and email it to you tomorrow.

Would really love to read the story, where can it be found?

Brothers of the Bow carry The Best of TBM.
What a cool story Monty B. and the Grizzly.I was lucky enough to recieve one of the arrows in Monty's quiver from that Grizzly hunt.Solid fiberglass fish arrow crested with broadhead
intact !
I believe Monty is working on a book ??
His pic of the skulls for size reference is really neat.
The way he wrote the story was trully an awesome piece of literature, but it dosen't even compare to him telling the story to all of us sitting on the edge of our seats at the Kalamazoo Expo a few years back. It brought chills to my neck, and still does thinking about it. He is one hell of a great story teller.
It is a great story, the kind that stick in your mind and a lesson learned to remember.
I believe that access to every article printed by TBM, from the first issue through the current one, is available with their online subscription.
thanks Walt

I can't recall that one. But the best one I ever read was by Len Cardinale. Article was titled "Feel the Heat". Walking a brown bear trail along a salmon stream thru head hi willows. Visibility about 6 ft. Bear tracks the size of turkey platters. Len says "Every time I would stop the barrel of the guides 375 H&H was laid on my shoulder with the muzzle about a foot in front of my nose." Well you get the picture.
Side note;
When Monty got back from his hunt, he called me and we talked about scoring it. He said he wasn't going to enter it in the P&Y record book because he didn't feel worthy enough to knock Fred Bear out of the top spot. I had to tell him that Jack Frost had already done that and that he should enter it.
THAT'S how much attention Monty pays to stuff like that. Heckuva man that Browning.
I wish Monty could read all of this.... Or does he? :)
I heard him tell it at Cloverdale. That was maybe 5 or 6 years ago.A story like that stays with you.
I remember someone asked him what it was like to have hunted so many places, and experienced so much.He started his answer off with "I'm just a tree trimmer".
Absolutely one of THE best stories I've ever read, then heard when he told it at the NYB banquet.
Monty is an awesome guy :notworthy:
Monty is at the top of the list for gentlemen and storytellers. He told that story at a seminar at the UBM several years ago. He is the best. I think he will be our guest speaker for the 25th anniversary of UBM.
Had the pleasure of meeting Mr Browning a few years back when he came to speak in Louisville. He took me up on the invitation to join me and a few others at my house for a great Greek meal my wife prepared. We laughed and were awed by his story telling all thru dinner. A few weeks after his visit my wife and I received a wonderful hand written letter from Monty thaning us for a wonderful night and the hospitality.... I've received Thank You cards and such for hosting dinners before, but never a full page, hand written letter. That is the type of man he is...He left a lasting impression on my family.
I would to read that story.

Joey! Browning? With a computer?
HHAHAHhHAhhahhHh...now that's funny!
Another quick story;
At PBS Banquet in Charlotte he donated one of his solid fiberglass hunting arrows for silent auction. I bid upwards of $600 for it but as I was working the banquet, it closed before I could get back to the bid sheet.
Later that evening, Monty thanked me for running up the bid on his arrow. He thouht it odd that I would bid on one of his arrows because Joey and I have both returned his lost arrows from mmmmmmisses on the 3d course.
I said; "THE arrow that killed the world record bear! I wasn't running he bid up! I wanted it!"
Bemusedly he told me that, that wasn't THE arrow. Just AN arrow.
A week later I got a long, skinny package in the mail from Browning. Yep. It was THE arrow that he killed the bear with. Inscribed with the date and his signature along with a handwritten note that said if I ever tired of having it, that I use it somehow, for the betterment of bowhunting.
You can't make this stuff up folks........
Biggie...thats a great story..im glad i have met him...
You need to kill a deer with that arrow Biggie!
I also wanted that arrow Biggie I was out of the running very early though.Come to think about it that was my last banquet.I need to get to Portland.
My financial position is better now though so the next time one of Mr brownings arrows comes around I'll be ready.I only met him breafly and he did seem like a very genuine guy.
I love to read Monty's stuff, I wish he would write a book..or has he? Jason
Biggie has kill arrows from lots of his hero's! Even Joebuck! Show em your trophy room Biggie! Neat man cave.
Jeff, we've been wondering what happened to you!
Marty, we need to design a fireplace or the middle of the room......

Cool story and picture, Biggie.
I got to read the story this morning, it was a great read.
Monty is just a regular working man that loves hunting to the point that he just does what it takes to go. I believe most of his trophies are displayed so the local kids and others can enjoy them.
Had the pleasure of talking with him for about an hour last year after his Alaska hunt.
Truly a Southern Gentleman!
I have the magazine with the article stashed away, think you can still backorder them from TBM?
Great story and read, I do hope Mr. Browning is going to write a book! be worth any and every penny!
J
I guess in my earlier post I was thinking of a different hunt. Monte had killed a caribou and got pretty close to the kill site a day (or so) later only to find a sow and two cubs on the gut pile. Pretty spooky tale....
He told that story at Cloverdale a number of years ago.... There was no bear killed in that one.... so this one is diffrent.
Sorry for my confusion.
I gotta go with Biggie on the fact that Monty is one special person idea. I had the privledge of having him come stay at my house a whole weekend. I had never met him before that and it amazes me how much impact one man can have on another persons life in only a few days. Great Man
Another story that might be of interest...when Mr. Browning killed his world record water buffalo, he was guided by Andrew Mackay. Andrew told me that when Monty arrived in Darwin he asked Andrew to please stop at a hardware store...he needed to pick something up. Monty went inside and came out with some kind of hinge and Andrew asked him what it was for. He said that his longbow was too long to fit with his luggage so he sawed it in half at the handle right before he left home. He "simply" bought the hardware, fixed his bow back to working condition and then a few days later, killed the buffalo that was (and maybe still is) the world record. It was with one of those big fiberglass arrows as well. If anyone can clean this story up...please do- but I think I'm pretty close on this one.
Water buff, water buff......you mean THIS water Buff?

There aren't many stories to compare with Monty telling the grizzly story in person. In the article he writes that it was like a 27' shot, but he says it was really only about 15'. He said he changed the story cause he didn't think any one would believe the 15' shot.
Thanks Biggie for the picture...I've never seen it bofore. What a monster!
That is a big buff.
the story i was talking about in the post was called "solitude" i had someone email me the story an another is sending the TBM mag to me from B.C. you guys are awsome..i think the story was from around 2006...he wasen't hunting a bear he was Moose an Bou hunting in this one..
Thanks Tradgang..the best people anywhere...at least in turned into a goodpost..Scott
T.j told me Monty Browning Grizzly bear story was in Aug/Sep 1996 issue of TBM.
