Title: 8gpp or less?
Post by: Barry Winner on February 01, 2011, 11:00:00 AM
Does anyone shoot 8gpp or less from their hunting bow?  I always try to be 9+, but I've got a combo right at 8gpp that shoots so well out of my 54# Hoyt GM2 that I don't want to change anything to make it heavier.  It's a 29.25 inch GT Trad 3555 with a 50 grain insert and a 125 grain point.  The broadhead will be a 125 grain 2-blade Magnus Stinger.  Do you think it'll be OK for whitetails?

It should be fine. Weight forward, two blade, 54 lb shoot be a good combo. most however will say to stick with heavier set up but you probably know that or you wouldnt be asking. You will increase noise going lighter and may void warranty on some bows.

You will shoot through every whitetail you hit through the lungs at reasonable distances every time. I like a lighter set up myself and would not be afraid to take on any cervid with your set up. The overly heavy arrow thing is not for me. I have yet to leave an arrow in a whitetail with 8-9 gpp. I dont have any bows set up with over 10.5 gpp.

I have a friend that shoots super lite rigs.  His heaviest arrow, he told me, was 290gr.  He usually shoot about 45lb.  It speaks volumes about how tough a RER is.

He thinks I am crazy because my arrows for my 67# Robertson are 600 gr.

God Bless,
Nathan
