Seems like a lot of bows just flat out smokes an arrow. lb for lb Morrisons are the quickest bows I shot.
Yaa,Morrisons flat out smoke an arrow.
I dont know where that phrase got started. But it has a nice ring to it.So its popular to use desribing a fast bow.
I confess.I have said it.
I agree. Morrisons are fast and quiet.
Benny
I have both Morrison carbon foam and A&H carbon bamboo they both smoke arrows, I use 8 strand strings super quiet.
Black Swan bows smoke arrows.
My Dwyer Endeavor smokes an arrow.
I think it is supposed to offer images of an arrow traveling so fast that the fletching catches fire while in flight. Seems to be a positive connotation. Course, it is relative. If you have been shooting 130 fps and shoot a bow that is 160 fps, then it flat out smokes an arrow. I see it alot when people are selling bows, that way, you don't have to quantify the actual speed.
Bought a 54" Super Shrew Deluxe off here that was advertised that way,and they were right,it does.
Well,..... The fletching on my arrows is still warm when I go to pull them out of the target after shooting them out of my Daala, does that count as fast enuf???
:biglaugh:
:p
"Flat out smokes" is at the upper end, followed by "really spits them out."
By the time you get down to "very forgiving" it's a bow that allows you to reach out and manually correct the arrow in the early stages of flight.
Say, maybe that's how they make carbon arrows? Shoot a cedar out of a Morrison?
I guess you will have to ask the each person who says it.
Well my bow will flat out lob a woodie, and yes Charlie it is very forgiving. :biglaugh:

At what speed does the cedar smoke and turn to carbon :dunno: :
I reccomend using fire retardant on the fletch if you shoot an Eaglewing. You might find out what flat out smokes an arrow means !!!!!
:campfire: :archer2:
God bless you all, Steve
Every bow flat out smokes when you're selling it..just like they all been shot very little or they hate to do this. ;)
That being said Morrisons are decently fast.My ILF recurve will huck a 600+ grain surewood with some good authority.
My griffins will flat out git it down there!!! :archer2:
Every year at our first bonfire. I light it with a flaming arrow. That is the the only time I get an arrow to smoke.
Kids DON'T TRY THIS AT HOME! I am a trained professional.
Make sure you check all your bows with a scale. Don't go by what's writen in the bow for weight. I think all the highend bows are about the same.

I smoked an arrow once, didn't do anything for me. Then again I didn't inhale.
compard to my other bows the new one really fire an arrow. likes it. might build some heavier arrows up
"What does flat out smokes an arrow mean!!!"
That describes an arrow that flies "flat out to 20 yards" and of course "hits like a ton of bricks." ."
Flat out smokes an arrow is Redneck language means MORRISON in english. :readit:
It is a bow shooting an arrow at such a high velocity that friction with the atmosphere raises the temperature of the arrow's fletching right up to near kindling temperature. If you were of an inquisitive mind and had access to a chronometer, you would be looking at 175-180 f.p.s. but much higher if the bow's speed was only estimated by it's owner.
One persons smoke is another persons dog.
Doesn't mean a darn thing.
It is a subjective term used to describe any bow that a person is either trying to sell or brag about. The term is often deflated or destroyed by the simple use of a chronograph or proper weight hunting arrows. Slang terms simply can't stand up to facts and science. :banghead: :biglaugh:
If I wanted to smoke em in there I would be shooting a muzzle loader.
My Morrison has taught me bout arrow smokery...can we say 210? Smoke is not necessary, but it shooore is sweet.
They all smoke when shot at 10 ft. HA ha
Never realized how slow my PCH and Schafer were until I shot Bobs ILF
Vapor trails work
I have some friends who are fond of saying "It's a hammer". I also shoot 3-D with a friend with a R/D Morrison and it is not only a hammer it flat out smokes and arrow! He's never let me shoot it though.

:saywhat:
I went to trad archery cause I was tired of thinking about how fast my bow was. Now with that said I have decided that somewhere between 170 to 180fps is the speed that I tend to shoot well. So I shoot the heaviest arrow I can that does that speed and flys well. And with that said my Horne Combo smokes a 660gr arrow out at 189fps! So far I think all the Horne bows are up there with the fastest out there.
Dan
Any bow sending a arrow down range quiet enough to kill a deer before spooking the deer. That is a bow that smokes an arrow or at least smokes a deer. 150 fps is smoking fast. That is 50 yds in one second so if you shoot most deer at 25 yds or less that arrow hits home in 1/2 second or less. :coffee: :deadhorse:
Well said,S.C. Hunter!
'Flat out smokes an arrow' means one of three things: 1) my bow is faster than your bow, 2)I have a new bow I'm bragging about, or 3)I have a bow for sale! :readit:
:biglaugh:
All the bows that I have had that "flat out smoked an arrow" I ended up selling, they just didnt seem to shoot consistant for me. Maybe it was the smoke getting in my eyes that caused me not to shoot them too good :)
What is there, maybe 10 fps that seperates a really fast bow from a average bow?
More like 40 or 50fps.
Fastest thing I ever owned was a Dan Quillion Patriot of 70#@28" I drew to about 29". It was probably well over 200 or even 210fps with hunting cedars. It was also LOUD and there was not much seperation between the "KRACK" of the bow and the "Thwack" of the arrow hitting the target. But I never caught the fletch or nock entering my focus zone and I missed that. I don't look at the arrow but I guess I need to see it hit to be happy.
Much of the smoke was from my ears and nostrils trying to draw a 70# bow. I didn't keep that one long.
What does flat out smoke an arrow mean??I don't know.. What does Real Buckmaster mean?

Since you laid the gauntlet:
I'll say a '72 Howatt Hunter marked 55lbs (but really 58lbs @ 28), drawn to 30 inches (so actually 63lbs) and throwing a 530grn arrow smoked more of the arrow than any other bow I have ever shot- A light arrow for that bow don't ya think?
Joshua, longbow person.
My Dad would say "stone cold flat dab smokes an arrow", following up after the shot with, "thats just plain jane insanity." Im pretty sure my kids will pick up some of those corny lines from me, I guess its heredity.
