With the great weather we had here yesterday, I decided to head out to the woods with a quiver full of arrows and see what stump shooting was all about.
I HAD A BLAST... I get it now! I learned learned a few things and developed more confidence in my shooting ability.
First thing I need to do though is get some judo points, I lost three arrows yesterday, two were burried and one skipped off into a thicket never to be seen again.
I can't wait to go agian!
I know I don't do it as much as I should. Every time I go out I come back swearing I'll be back out soon. Helps with my shooting and learning to shoot at un-specified distances. Just a blast. Can't wait for the snow to go.

That's exactly my thoughts!
I need to start doing it!
It's a good way to scout,too...
Is there ever enough stumping? I would do it every day if I could.
Stump shooting is by far my favorite way to shoot. Every spring there is a weed that grows a seed pod about the size of a tennis ball. When hit with a judo it explodes in a spectacular way. Never get tired of shooting them!
Only kind of shooting I do really. Once the snow melts I'll do it every day. I dont even have a target outside, so stumpin' is it for me. Never get's boring.
I need to get out more, too. The snow is too deep, though. I do snow shoe, but don't stump shoot much because I lose too many arrows. I always find a few in the spring when the snow melts and before it greens up.
Yep. I went with my son yesterday on our lease here in Georgia. I took 6 arrows and came back with 5. I thought that we would do a little stumping and scout for turkey. In a little over an hour, we saw one squirrel, one rabbit, and three deer. We had a blast. We missed the squirrel (still in season) and didn't get a shot at the rabbit. Naturally, the deer stood there looking at us without a care in the world. I swear they keep calendars.
Yep, it is a lot of fun. Great way to do some preseason scouting as well.
Loads of fun, alone or with friends. Always enjoy the practice, various angles and distances. But you do lose or break a few arrows. Keep at it Don

Yeah it was interesting to try different angles and cants. It really improved my confidence, so much so I'm tempted to take my longbow on an upcoming hog hunt next month.
I don't know if I could afford enough arrows to do much of that kind of shooting, but it sure sounds fun. My new bow won't be ready until March, so my only fun is reading what everybody is posting on here, can't wait to get out and start shooting.
I do it a lot. always fun
yep, it's a lot of fun
I dont own a target either.Glad you found out just how much fun it is.
I love stump shooting as well. A good friend and I shot every Sunday afternoon for 3 years. Now he shoots trap....I will start with my son when this snow melts a little....Bobby
Ha yes,stump shooting's always a blast!
Went today on snowshoes in the Adirondacks, great time!
Nothing like it. Glad you had a great time.
Earl
i have gone out hunting with my dad in the morning and when we are on our way in we will do a little bit of stump shooting. i know i have lost a few arrows but i have found that i have been getting better at hitting the target. its a load of fun.
I love to stump shoot.
It's great, isn't it? Even when I go to the range, I keep a bunch of empty soda bottles in the bed of my truck and, if no one else is around, I will put them out all over and just shoot at them from unmeasured distances.
They're not stumps, but it's the same effect.
In the summer I can spend a whole day stumping.
Me and my son went out yesterday. Took the dog and the bow for a walk. Shot a few stumps and looked for squirrels (no luck with squirrels) but did kill some stumps! Had fun and that's the most important part! Jason

Yeah, most of what I was shooting at was leaves or dried cow pies...stress the dried lol
when the snow melts im going to give it a go. just afriad my arrows will break
Did a little stump shooting in the 'glades yesterday with a buddy. We only lost one arrow, and one broadhead we couldn't dig out of a tree.
Also found the remnants of an old pickup truck
with the gas fill/cap on the hood?We also found some fresh panther tracks. (http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn66/tarponnut/008-2.jpg) (http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn66/tarponnut/005.jpg) (http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn66/tarponnut/003-1.jpg)
If you think you shoot alright across the lawn. After trying it you may feel a little different about how good you are.
   Do it all the time. As a matter of fact my 6 yr old niece went with me just this afternoon and enjoyed watching me so much she asked me if I would get her a bow!

Lots of yucca here in NM...those pods make outstanding targets! Those red prickly pear fruit make good targets, too. But ya hafta be careful getting your arrow if there's a big patch of the spiny devils!
sure is alot of fun, you are hooked now

My favorite - as if you couldn't tell from my camp name.
You don't have to drag out or clean stumps!
:archer2:
Not my favorite to eat, but man I sure love killin em.
stumping is not only a summer time event!

Good to see so many folks approve. Stumpin ain't just fun, it's the best hunt practice IMO! Was in the woods all day myself killin clods & other suitable expendibles w/a Reparrow Rick made me. Nailed an oak limb hidden behind a nice pile of dried leaves. Wups! Thought the arrow bought the farm. Not a scratch.
Stump shootin can sure teach you some things. I was out stumpin in the sagebrush/pinyon/juniper hills behind the house this last week. A Pinyon pine is OK to shoot if you have a nice, fat trunk to aim for.
I had carbon arrows with me and decided to see about putting one through the multiple branches of a big Pinyon to hit the large trunk of a second tree on the other side. Nope! Not sure what happened but the carbon arrow was busted off slick as if it was cut right below the fletching.
Lesson learned--be really careful around those Pinyons. They are one tough, mean tree!
my favourite way to spend a day afield !
