Title: Hog hunts with traditional equipment...
Post by: Lee Robinson . on January 30, 2011, 12:00:00 PM
Some of you may have seen the videos and photos of my daughter shooting her longbow. She will be practicing a lot and will be building up towards a hunting weight bow...but when the time comes I would like to put her on a hog.

I saw a sponsor here that had such hunts, but I would like to ask...does anyone know of anything close to central MS? Alabama and Louisiana are acceptable distances as well. Most of the places I know of will only let you hunt a hog with a bow during deer season. I think she will be ready in a few months...and of course deer season (next year) won't begin until October.

I would prefer to find a place that promotes traditional archery.

Giles island may offer something for you. They have lots of hogs.

Lee,

You are not that far from Texas and there are a bunch of hogs there and can be hunted year round. Louisiana is the same I believe as for hunting pigs year round. Georgia, they can be hunted as long as some season is open, ie Turkey, deer, I think the season is only closed for a month or so in the spring prior to Turkey opener, that is on public land of course.

Ray Hammond offers hunts in South Carolina, but that may be too far of a drive for you.

Mississippi should have lots of hogs, are you saying you can only hunt them there if deer season is open? Kinda crazy.

Danny

Ya...I have thought about heading out to TX maybe during the summer when I am off work. Being a school teacher that would be a good time for me to take my daughter on a road trip.

Here in MS, we can hunt hogs during any open season, but we have to use a weapon appropriate for that season. That leaves deer season or turkey season. It will be tough for her to be ready to hunt a hog by the time turkey season gets here. I am not too interested in letting my daughter try to take a hog with a frog gig. HAHA.

Hogs can be hunted year-round in MS, with any weapon, on private land.  The weapon/open season restriction is for federal land.

Hunt hogs 24/7 & 365 here in Texas where they are every bit a nuisance.

None of the private land in MS that I have access to has hogs...but...if you know of something please let me know.

I would be willing to offer a reasonable payment or one of my bows to someone that can put my girl (or even better both of us) on a hog once she is able to handle a hunting weight bow (as long as it is NOT a penned/canned hunt). It would mean a lot to her.

Lee and others, the rules have changed in Mississippi for Hogs and you can now hunt them pretty much year round here the link for the public notices and what has changed.  I'm also interested in getting together for a Hog hunt with some of the Mississippi boys and girls if you don't mind company

She will need a little while to build up her skills before moving up to a hunting weight bow for hogs, but she would certainly enjoy doing a little stump shooting and maybe coming across an occasional opportunity to take a shot at a squirrel.

I picked up some hog sign in the Homochitto last week. No hogs seen but I'll be checking back on them over the next few weeks.
