Well I have finally worked my way through all the other orders that were ahead of the St. Jude Auction Piece. Haven't even started yet, but just printed the pics I will be using.
I know Pete is down visiting Les right now for a couple weeks of hunting hogs, so it will be interesting to see how far along I get before they notice this post.
I am doing something a little different o this piece. I am making it bigger. The actual burn area will be about 11 inches wide and 12.5 inches tall. Why am I doing this? Number one, just because I want to. Number two, Les made a very generous donation to a great cause. And number three, Both Les and Pete are like family even though I have yet to have the privilege of meeting them face-to-face.
Still trying to decide who's the ugliest mammal in the photo. Out of the four in the pic, I am pretty sure it ain't the two hogs, LOL!
Also, just a warning...this could go fairly slow for a while as I will be traveling for work most of this coming week.
This is as far as I got tonight.
First pic is just the outline of the areas that will be carved.
You might not see a big difference in pic number two. I took a carving knife and cut as deep as I could on all the lines. This is called a "stop cut" and helps you from cutting into your figures when you remove all the excess wood.
In this last pic I have power carved out all the excess wood. In other words, created the different levels.
My next step is sanding each level. Usually 180, 220, 320, 400, and then 600 grain sand paper.
I'd say they'll notice this pretty quickly. I just got back from down there. The hogs have disapeared. There are so many acorns on the ground that they aren't moving at all during the day.
8-(
Hi, Biggie! Just heard from Les that there first 5 days were a bust. He said they saw 6 bucks, some doe, and a group of hogs on the way in, then never saw anything on stand. I told him it was because they saw them on the way in and knew to stay away from the feeders.
Anyway, they are taking a couple day break and then heading back out for another 5 days.
By the way, seems like an odd time of year for acorns to be dropping!
Just amazed at your work, cant wait to see this one progress.
Some people work with wood, some people can turn it into art. I've worked with wood since my dad started making me as a kid.
You turn it into art.
Yeah...that's the problem! Too many nuts in Florida.
Hurry up and get that one done so you can do my moose 8-)
Can not wait to see this one. Your work is always amazing!
that is awsome. most i can do with wood is build a live trap and a crestor. u my friend, have talent!
steven
Biggie, you got a ways to go at number 9 on the list.
Steven, but all my work does is look purty on the wall, you traps could keep you fed!
Very cool work you do there sir! Can't wait to see your finished masterpiece!
You make it look so easy, Hooked. Yet i know it takes a very special talented man with spirit to make them seem so real. Every piece inspires me to get back to making picture quivers again. Walk in Beauty Bro. :archer:
i cant wait to see the finished art work. that is somthing else Man.
WOW!That's interesting,can't wait for next

That is just awesome!! It's going to be way better than just hanging up a picture!

Chip this is way beyond my expectations. I think you have created the first "Traveling Burn". Pete will never forgive me if I don't allow it some hang time at his house.
some more progress...

VERY VERY COOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Awesome, would love to see how you do it!!
You are an incredible artist. What a great moment frozen in time
AMAZING!!
Can't wait to see patches come to life. I kept his tail.
Les,
your mossy oak jacket is killing me! I like mossy oak when I am wearing it, not when I have to draw it, LOL! I work on it a little and then go to something else.
By the way, I am not done with your faces. At the very least I need to darken them up. But they will change hopefully for the better.
Chip
How cool is this? Way!!!! I'm saying...
I am constantly amazed at the different and in dept talent I see here.
Yours is certainly no exception!! Totally awesome!!
Thank you for sharing.
God bless,Mudd
When I saw the photo I wondered how you'd handle the glare on their glasses. Looks like you're going to handle it just fine. Beautiful work!

How do I order one? I got a pic or two for sure...
Dang Chip, don't tell me that you were at Western Veterinary Conference. I was there all last week and would have loved to see some of your work first hand and to get to meet you in person. Oh well, too late now.

How's This?

Go for it. Very special Chip.
Just thought I would share with ya'll how this piece just did in the 2011 KC Woodcarvers Show and Competition.
Well, Les and Pete got 1st place in the shallow relief carving category. Also, the judge liked it so much she picked it as 2nd Place for Best of Show. It is the first time a woodburn has ever placed in Best of Show in the 38 plus years that they have been doing this show.
It must have something to do with the brothers' good looks! :scared:
Congrats,it was well earned
I'd like to see the "best in show" considering that second place went to such immaculate artwork! Amazing quality work, Hooked!
Thanks!
Dryfired, The best of show was a big chip carved bowl. It was a woodcarving show after all. 42 categories and only 3 are for woodburning. Pyrography is kinda an afterthought at these shows. They let us participate but most shows only have one category for us and to even be considered to place in best of show just never happens. The judge even told me that after the show. Makes it that much more rewarding!
I sure hope to get one of your pieces before they start getting priced at the fair market value of your talent!
Chip,
Absolutely Beautiful workmanship/artistry!
Off subject question: What were you doing at Western States Veterinary Conference? Doc

Hey, Doc!
I'm in sales. Started a job last September as a regional manager with a company that manufactures and sells digital dental x-ray sensors to dentists and veterinarians. Almost embarrassed to tell you who because we are trying real hard to turn around the poor reputation for support they had developed over the years. We are making real progress! The company used to be AFP Imaging, but is now ImageWorks.

Shaun, prices are going up. As much as I love doing these pieces, I just can't keep making 4 to 5 dollars an hour with all the time I put into them. Also, with the recognition I am getting there is starting to be real demand for other types of pieces. Like this one:

Here are all the pieces I entered, photo isn't the greatest

Chip Congratulations and thank you.

Beautiful work!
May be alittle early, but thought I would bring this post up to try and promote the St Jde auction. Hard to believe this was 6 years ago. Better bid high and often! Might be another 5 years before I offer one in the auction again ;-)
