What do you prefer to stain your wood shafts with???
I use Minwax. Many different options though.
Love Minwax.
Oil-based wood stain, water-based wood stain, analine dye, Rit dye, natural pigments, leather dye, it all depends upon the look I'm going for on that particular set.
Guy
Three Rivers alcohol based stain. When that runs out I'll probably go with MinWax.
I hope to be building my own woodies soon and would like to make them a darker brown than the wood arrows I usually see. Any suggestions for a specific Min Wax color that will do this?

Dark Walnut or Jacobean. It also depends on the wood you're using. And you can let'em soak longer for a bit darker finish.
Powdered rit dye disolved in alcohol. Soaks in and drys pretty quick.

Thanks.
Dark brown leather dye (Febrings) I think its called.. get it at most shoe repair places and tandy leather or a saddle shop... works awesome and can change shade by just adding a bit of water and drys super fast and dont get sticky or smell like minwax does :)
Try it and you will never use anything else I promise
Ken
Kens right the stuff works incredible.
Saw a nice article somewhere about taking your osage shavings and boiling them, and you get a great medium yellow to orange stain. You can also use the sawdust to do the same. I think I am going to try it.
I use minwax, works great and alot of colors to choose from.
Don't forget the water based Minwax choices either. You can get a couple nice yellows in it too.
Im with hvyhitter, been doin it that way for better than 20 years
I will be trying used coffee grounds on some here soon.
Ive used water based and alcohol from 3r. Ive used minwax too. Polyshades with the stain mixed into the poly is great also and I am doing a dozen surewoods with it as we speak. All good stuff! The alcohol takes longer to get because it has to ship ground. All good stuff tho!
I used water based analine dye when I was working with ash.
Fiebing Leather Dye, Fiebing Professional Oil Dye, or Minwax Wood Stain, depending on what I grab. I I have used them all regularly.
RonP
Blueberry or raspberry juice...PR
Minwax here too. It has a sealer in it that seems to make my first coat of poly not soak in as much so it gives it a higher build.
I use brown latex paint. I wipe it on and rub it in, when I reach the shade i want, I wipe with a clean cloth. Dries in minutes and holds on to the poly or oil finishes.
aniline dye powder mixed in water, or min wax resin based stains right outta their cans.
I use the water-based 3 Rivers Archery stain and then a few coats of tung oil. Nice tough finish.
The Fiebings Leather dye really does a good job, especially on woods that don't take stains as well.
spirit dyes as they soak right on in then i spray with poly done deal  hey Magnus let me know how the coffee grounds go as my wife drinks that much coffee that i would have a life time supplie :biglaugh:
I like the coffe idea. We go thru so much at work, I started saving some of the grounds to ferment a few days, and see how it turns out.
I sell an alcohol based stain and we always sell a bunch of it at the shoots we attend. There must be a few people other than me that like it. 12 different colors.
i use minwax or cabot oil stain its easy to get and comes in 1/2 pints quarts and gallons
I usually used minwax special walnut. Apply more coats for a deeper color. Once I tried gasket lacquer squegie system I never sealed with anything else. Good Luck and have fun.

I sure will Jeff. I'll probably give it a go tomorrow and see. It's not my idea though. Saw it on here awhile back.
Coffe works okay, ive used it.. wont get real dark though..
