Title: Will this setup work?
Post by: Blood Trail 2 on January 28, 2011, 11:32:00 PM
I'm new to trad and I recently got a recurve to cut my teeth on. It's 45#@28 in. My draw on a compound is 30. I was planning on using Easton xx75 2216's I think (don't qoute me, though) with 125 grain Magnus. WOuld this be good enuff for deer and hogs?

depending on what your actual draw length is will determine what weight you'll be pulling. From there you can determine what spine arrow will work for you.
Back to your question, yes. You'll probably be pulling around 50#' and that is enough for deer and hogs.
More importantly is that you start with a draw weight that you can handle and learn the basics and good form with. After that you can always shoot heavier bows

Don't know anything about aluminums but I approve of your choice of broadhead.

2216s will likely be way too stiff.  I have two 50 lb. recurves and they shoot 2016s and 2018s with 125-grain points well (50 pounds @28 inches with 29-inch draw.  Search for Stu Miller's spine calculator here on Trad Gang and download it.  It will give a you a good idea of where to start.

get an arrow that will fly straight out of that bow.
Learn how to shoot well.
Put a sharp broadhead on the tip.

Aim small miss small.

Eat meat!

Your energy is there. Just get the setup tuned in and make meat!

Might have to get a little closer to the piggies. They're more tough than a deer.
Have fun

With a 31" arrow and depending on the point weight, you might want to look at a 2117 if you're interested in a heavy arrow.

Like above, get it tuned & go. Suggest you look at "RC's" posts. He's the hog king & has your setup nearly identical.
