Hey guys,
Last year was a great time, and a great bunch of guys that got together for the winter/spring stump shoot off Rt. 29.
It's not too early to start thinking about doing it again. Who's in?
In!
Six hour round trip to go shoot stumps?
I'm in! :archer:
See you there Thorny.
Just dont let Domestic Death bring any armadillo burgers. :nono:
Cabin fever setting in fellas?????
When and where?
If I remember correctly, I will want to shoot last, unless you guys dont aim for arrows anymore :smileystooges:
I'll come out and play if I'm not at Ray's. In May though I will be Turkey Hunting and Striper fishing.
I'm in again. May is for turkeys though. Great time last year & look forward to seeing you guys again.
Last year I think we waited for the beginning of April.
Any preferences on when?
April sounds ok. At least you have a chance of finding wayward arrows.
Grouse
Count me in have some woodies to try out.New bow
to show off also!!!!!
April is a ways off, but it is something to plan for with the snow this deep.
I'll be in touch as the time gets closer.
Would you be interested to have it in the same place or some other area???
The place we hit last year worked out pretty good, but I am always up for something new. Got any place in mind?
There is State Forest Close to where you guys shot last year. Ron pointed it out and said he has stumped there before and people do a lot of horse back riding.
Its not a mountain which could be both good and bad, and looks like there is good parking. just a thought.
Tim, would you be referring to a bow with initials BJ?
MAYBE................................
:bigsmyl:
Charlie,
What state land are you referring to?
Grouse
Charlie,
It sounds like the place we DID go last year.
State land, lots of parking, and lots of horse back riding. But best of all it has MANY rotten stumps.
Check out "Trad Events and Gatherings" fellas...
... mike ...
Sounds like we can firm it up at Mikey's
We could also do 2.... :readit: :archer:
i'm in.

Ken Thornhill is right, I thought it had a different name but I was referring to
Rockwood State Forest. Great place!
:knothead: :archer:
My wife's from Rock Tavern in orange County, would that qualify me for in-state stumping license :D
Well, we ate at the Rockwood tavern after so I guess that would be a yes. Any out of staters that would like to join us are welcome of course.
Charlie,
When are you going to Ray's? We don't want the stump shoot on that weekend.
Ken, PM sent.
Dont hold the bus for me ;) I would love to come out and shoot but would rather who ever makes the plans, to schedule it for whatever works best for them.
Add me and a couple younguns to the list. Sounds like fun!
With the amount of snow on the ground here, I dont think it will completely melt till July. Im bringing my bowfishing rig for stumping. It will make arrow retrieval MUCH easier.
I cant wait for this.
Hard water Bowfishing? I have seen guys do it in WI, not a great Idea for stumps but it would be good way to practice with your old bear bow. Just dont set it down you will lose it :knothead: . let me know casey when you want to go, I can come down or you can come up, we'll get you a carp.
Terry may agree with you to do as I say and not as I do ;)
Everyone had a blast last year at the stump shoot, this will be good.
This is shaping up good. I would like to suggest the third or 4th weekend in April at the Rockwood state forest, where we had it last year.
I know it is early to start working on April, but that gives people plenty of time to plan, and RonW was right; cabin fever is setting in.
Sounds good to me hurry up april.Would anybody want to head over to tollgate some weekend and
fling a few in Georges in door range????????
I should be there the day before Valentine's day Tim.
Well guys, now that it is March, I'm thinking spring isn't far away.
I am thinking that April the 17th would work out pretty good for our shoot, with a start time of 10:00 at the forest. That should give the guys with a bit of a drive plenty of time.
We are talking about a simple stump shoot here with good people and lots of stumps.
The 17th is a Sunday. I am looking for any and all feedback.
sounds good to me Mr. Legend! maybe a few of the regulars could get together before that, walk the course (so to speak) and set up a few suprises?? i will also arrange to have one of the local taverns ready to accomodate us after the shoot.
 I hope'n the snow is gone....but that sounds good to me. It is the week before Easter but if we wait to much longer it's Turkey season. I will again provide a prize for the longest distance traveled to the shoot......in state or out of state!! Hope we get a bunch.......if you have kids that shoot they are more than welcome!!!
Ken- That sounds great to me. Maybe we can get out there the weekend before.
Ron- Good show. It almost makes me wish I lived farther away to get that prize.
also had an idea. how about before or after the shoot we have some type of trade blanket, ya know everyone that has extra gear ( i have a TON)we could give/trade/ or sell, maybe help those out that need a few things? if anyone thinks this would be something they wanted to do i could think about a bit more and have a better game plan. i have a ton of things i could part with and people could use!
This sounds great. I hope to make it. Ken, The trade blanket is a awesome idea.
After the week Im having right now, Im gonna need a break in the woods soon.
I hope to be able to make this . Ken , you know how I feel about spreading the wealth so to speak . Drew
that would be AWESOME brother drew!!!!!! maybe come in on a Friday or Saterday night, ya know there is ALLWAYS a place for you!!!
The trade blanket is a cool idea. As long as the boys dont have games that day, Ill be there.
can ya bring the boys Izzy?
I sure can if everything lines up.I plan on this being Nates big break out year where he steps out with big bro and I.
wanna go tomorrow :knothead: cant wait.... That should be the week after Rays. I hope I'm recovered by then.
BTW. Ron, I traveled from WI, does that count? If Casey comes he'll have me beat :smileystooges:
Sundays are bad for me.... shoot a stump for me.
So does longest distance mean from where you live or how far you drive...if the latter I'm in luck as I can drive in circles for hours...lol
Gonna try to make it...
Looking good guys. I will bring Ed again & his "special stumpin" arrows. I let him know the 17th looks like the day.
Ken, good idea for the blanket.
Can't wait.
Tell Ed that his 'boomerang' arrows are welcome. This should be good.
Will make sure he has some pretty pink ones all set up. Looking forward to it guys. Snow is still pretty deep in my neck of the woods.
rain is removing a lot of snow, should be good when the shoot rolls around!
Hmmm, I'll be on vacation. This is sounding like a really good time. I'm in. Tomorrow is my last Scouting event as I am retiring from any official capacity. I don't think I have anything going on. :archer2:
Izzy if ya grab me I will go with ya!! Hopefully I can be shooting by than! Shawn
Shawn even if your not shooting please join us bro!!!!!!!!
Brian you BETTER make this man and bring the boys!!!!!!!
I sure hope there is a snow shovel on that trade blanket. We might need it.
Yes Ken, it has b een snowing here since mid morning & still coming down fast & heavy.
AAARRRRGGGGGHHHHHH we shall see this is CRAZY!
well i guess time to seriously think about changing the date? i know that the ski trails will stay pretty hard for a good while know.
You are probably right, but lets give it a little more time.
The week after is Whittingham, and then we get into turkey season.
Lets not give up hope on this one. How is the weather looking up by you guys now? Its starting to look good down south, and April 17th is still a ways away. Lot of time for it to burn off. :archer:
Quick question: Do you need a hunting license to stumpshoot NY?
F-Manny
Not if you practice catch and release.
Manny drag yer carcass up here bro!!!! i will take a hike around the area this weekend and see how bad it really is. i know last weeki went sonwshoing a little farther up North and it was DEEP! if anyone wants to stretch their legs and join me this weekend just give me a hollor.
I'm in brother, let's plan where and when!
:)
F-Manny
Snow is quite deep yet, Cant imagine what its like up north.
Took a hike with Ken Sunday afternoon, it was up to my knees in a lot of places.
Took a hike up to my land up north today. Snow is still very deep. 2-3 feet in most places ¬ going anywhere fast in the woods. How is it around you Ken? Hope there is less by you.
HA HA where i hunt up on the mountain is still DEEP! no deer that at all. i plan on getting up there for a quick hike Saterday morning, i'll take some pic's.
What's the area of this shindig?
Ttt
The area is Rockwood or Johnstown, NY. Pretty much the Fulton-Montgomery counties. Very nice area.
How you gonna shoot stumps up there? I thought all their was grows up there is reindeer moss and lichen.
Its going down bout 30 miles southwest o' that.
auctually looking pretty good now! by next weekend i hope to walk the land and shoot. took a quick hike with Adirondackman today and lost a few arrows in the snow but should be GOOD in a week!
Thats great news!
I'm in!
I'll try to convince my hunting pard, and we'll go meet with the gang!
F-Manny
TTT
There might be a little snow on the ground, or it might be standing water. Either way, wear boots, and you should be good to go.
Sounds like we are going to have more people this year than last year.
It's a stump shoot. How can it not be fun with this group.
Guys, this sounds awesome!!...I'll be thinking of you all when I'm sitting....at work....
Have fun!
April 17th is looking good!
It's Palm Sunday but I should be ok to make it.
I can do the 17th. Let me know! Shawn
Don't forget....for the person who comes the farthest there is a prize donated by me.All this fun and a chance to win something to!!
Does that include the mileage for getting lost and doubling back to pick-up the breadcrumb trail several times?
No bread crumb trails are allowed.....Blueberry Muffin trails are a different story!! :biglaugh:
trust me Manny will win the award!
Lol!
Looking forward to it, seems to be the 17th?
F-Manny
Hasn't changed. April 17, and starting at 10:00 for those who have to drive some to get there.
Judos or blunts work great here guys. The stumps are mostly very soft.
Had a hand injury this past week. Taking steriods right now. Should be fine by the 17th. Either way Ed & I plan on being there.
In case folks missed it there is a 3D shoot April 10th in Vernon Center. Very nice people putting it on & hope some of you can come. If anyone needs info just PM me & I'll get you the info.
In case you want us to bring snacks all the smoked buck nuts and porcupine kidneys you can eat are on me!!! You fellers are gonna love em cooked over an open fire.Hudson river carp with wild Arbor Hill onions for the main course. Keep in mind, these treats are for you fellas. Ill stick to granola bars.
Izzy, That sounds delightful  I wish they had a Graemlin puking
i'm your huckleberry fire up the grill!!!
If Ken can eat it, so do I!
:bigsmyl:
So hopefully my hunting partner will join, but in any case I'll be there the 17th.
It will be a lot of fun!
F-Manny
I'll stick with a blueberry muffin thank you very much.....Arbor Hill onions?????
Ronny, would Hamilton Hill onions do you better? :biglaugh:
Izzy, That would be closer to home but still have the distinct tainted flavor.
I think whatever is in the soil can make them onions addictive. They must fertilize with little zip lock capsules. :readit: I see them little baggies all over the place
Don't matter what hill the come from , I still don't have a clue!! :dunno:
ok now what bow is everyone bringing? i believe i will take my Kanati.
I will bring my BigJim's buff bow
My brand new Holm-Made Osprey......just to show it off!! Feel free to ask to shoot it,I think you'll be impressed!
Either my Lost Creek NAT or LC Life Ender. Depends how my hand heals. Ed will be bringing a riser (ILF) he made himself with either my Morrison linbs or some he just ordered. Very cool riser he made.
Us poor folk will just be bringing the same old bow that we used last year.
Dan- make sure Ed brings an extra string, just in case.
Kat, Same old bow from last year :saywhat: , which one would be........... :biglaugh: I feel sorry for you!
1966 Browning Explorer. Probably others. Depends how many bearers I can get together for my safari.
I most likely will be shooting whatever I want to turkey hunt with.
Thinking about a little G&L bow on my rack right now.
Don't worry kat, Ed also makes his own strings. He is quite the "maker" of things.
If someone could get some good pics of Ed's riser and send them to me I would appreciate it. I'm looking at a similar project and looking for ideas....
Thanks.
Dan- That's good. It really irritates me when he outshoots me with my own bow.
Keith, I'll see what I can do.
Will see Ed either this weekend or Monday. I will Rey to get some good pictures & send them to Ken to post on here. He is the most impressive person I have ever met. Can't wait to shoot with you guys. I'm still on drugs for the hand but hope to be able to shoot. Would it offend anyone if I have to bring a compound if my hand isn't healed? Hate to even ask & hope it isn't an issue by then.
Dan
training wheels are fine bro, wonder how many arrows ya loose??? i can take some good detailed pic's for Keith when you guys come up. i know Ron W has some real SMOOTH leight weight bows that i bet ya could borrow to shoot if it helped? bet he will only charge $100 a day!
If it doesn't heal to where I can shoot my left handed bows the first thing I will try is switching to righty. I have a 55# @ 28 one piece Pearson RH that my dad bought me 30 yrs ago. Didn't realize it was RH & the guy lied to him about it. Would be so cool to kill something with it. If can't do that then try a release on my trad bows then if all else fails go to wheels. Don't have to go there just yet though.
I have a 43# Ben Pearson Colt (RH) you're welcome to borrow as a loaner.
We understand the stigma of needing to use a bow with prostetic devices like wheels or sights. You don't have to be ashamed. :archer:
Wow Ive been busy. Cant belive Ive missed all this chatter. 17th Looks good for me so far.
Izzy, I'll eat anything wraped in bacon. So maybe I'll bring bacon? :dunno:
Its too early for me to think of which bow to bring.
Daniel, I have a dual shelf 56 Bear Kodiak thats 38# @ 28" I can bring for ya. You decide which side to shoot from.
Unfortunately, we can't make this shoot! Hopefully we will be chasing some hogs in Florida on the 17th.
Good Luck Terry.
You are only allowed to go chase hogs if you bring back stories.
Daniel, I have a 43 lb bear recurve that you may use if you need to.
Casey, where have you been?
I can bring a D longbow 56# @26 if someone needs a bow
F-Manny
I give a big THANK YOU to all that have offered bows for me to use. Ed actually has 35# limbs I could use on his Palmer to practice form & strength until I could shoot the 55# bow I have. My hand is healing & I hope to be shooting my lefty bows in another week or so. Won't know til I'm shooting but hopefully!!! Looking so forward to the shoot. If anyone wants to come to the 3D shoot the tenth it will be a real good time. Let me know.
Dan
Dan,
i'll try to make the shoot on the 10 and see if i can get a few others to come.
If you need directions I can give you Bills #. Great guy & a family of trad hunters.
Dan
Hand is getting better guys. Hope to start shooting my longbow this weekend. If it goes OK I will be good for the stump shoot.
a little tease for the donation table :0)
Drew, those look great! Anyone would be happy with those.
OHHHHH BOYYYYYYYYY
ok now on the trade blanket i need your thoughts. i was thinking of everyone drawing a number from a hat and pick in that order? should we have it before or after the shoot? any other ideas? if someone had a few things they want to sell that is fine but my idea for the blanket was for everyone to bring the extra gear you don't use for the blanket and whoever might need/want it? what do ya think?
Drawing sounds good to me , just looking to share so it really doesn't matter how it gets done.
i would say we could shoot for order but ole Thorny would clean house and we would only have an old wool blanket for trade!
I think any way you do it Ken would work fine, Nobody's coming to this event to go home with armloads of gear.
I think picking is better than randomly winning unless random winners are choosing their prize? :dunno:
I just want to meet and greet some great people.
looks like Drewsbow and FrenchManny will be coming up early on Saterday!!!! if anyone else would like to come up Saterday i do have a lot of room at my house and my mothers, we can put you up for the weekend, ya need NOTHING, much food and drink for ya!!!
Well it's confirmed I'm coming! Gonna drop my wife and 3yo at my M-I-L's near Newburgh Friday night, head to Troy for a reunion Saturday night and head to the Adirondacks early AM Sunday or maybe Saturday night depending on the festivities in Troy...
Besides the blanket swap or whatever it's called what else do I bring?
NOTHING, just yourself! as far as the blanket you need nothing, if you have extra gear you don't use bring it and throw it down. the trade blanket like Charlie said is just a small thing, the best is to meet new faces! look forward to seeing you!
Looking forward to meeting everyone. I get to NY a lot for my wife's family. Would be cool to have some like minded folks to shoot with when I get tired of the in-laws homestead.
Extra gear is an understatement...lol
Went all trad 18months ago and have 8 LBs and 2 RCs on my bow rack...don't even get me started on the small stuff!
You can always throw a bow on the blanket :archer:
Cant wait fellas. Should be shooting again. Hate to say, we are looking at more snow Friday if the weather man is right. I know, they usually aren't but lets hope that they have it wrong.
Numbers out of a hat sounds fair to me.
Anyone have the address/coordinates to plug into Mapquest or Rand McNally for driving directions?
Charlie, That equipment doesnt sound very traditional :readit: :biglaugh:
Hopefully Ken will come through with an address soon.
Antonio, there are a few great Guys around the Newburgh area for future NY visits.
I think Thorny is right. Numbers would be an orderly way to play. If people are all set with gear they can "pass the buck".
If you go to Mapquest maps, and type in Rockwood state forest, a map will pop up. Then just click on directions, and voila.
QuoteCharlie, That equipment doesnt sound very traditional.
Equipment? It will be printed out here at work and then stuck in the pages of my 20 year old New York Gazeteer topo map book . . . and most likely then both left on the kitchen counter Sunday morning beside my finger tab. :banghead:
I'm doomed. I typed in Rockwood State Forest and it gave me directions to Tennessee. I kid you not. :biglaugh: They'll find my bones in the summer along some Adirondak logging road.
Look at your Gazetteer and find Johnstown N.Y.. Then follow Rt. 29 west for about 8 miles give or take. That's where Rockwood State Forest is. Big parking area on the south side of the road. Not sure where your coming from but that will get you there!! :readit:
i can meet anyone thatneeds me to meet them at exit 28 on the throughway which is just a few minutes from my house.
Charlie,
Try Rockwood state forest, Johnstown NY. If you drive to Tennessee, I bet you would win Ron W.'s furthest traveled award. :readit:
If you head out on 29, you would see a big group of cars on the left hand side of the road if you follow Google maps recommended travel routes.
I'd offer you my spare set of tabs but I'd probably leave them on my table too.
Can't wait!
Most likely I will arrive on Saturday, it will be fun times!
If somebody from the Champlain lake area North NY wants a ride, let me know
F-Manny
:banghead:  :banghead: weather forcast!
Relax Ken....the stump shoot is the 17 th........

Have it all plotted out with twenty-seven 8 by 10 colored glossy pictures with the circles and arrows and a paragraph on the back of each one explainin' what each one is

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v169/Stumpkiller/StumpySays.gif) Yeah. I get that a lot. (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v169/Stumpkiller/aga_pirate.gif)
Just NE of Binghamton near greater metropolitan Tunnel, NY (I-88).
What's another foot of snow among friends. It will melt off quickly. We still have 2 1/2 weeks.
Just wear higher boots. Should be ok by then. Maybe just a little sloppy.
Looks like the big snow forecast was a April fools joke......We should be good in 2+ weeks.
i'm thinking about taking a walk around the trails tommorow morning and shoot a few stumps. looks like it will be great in 2 weeks.
also for those coming early on Saterday we can have a nice dinner at my mothers, swap lies and tell stories!
Can't wait!
I'll be in on Sat for sure.
Last things to do: Pack and load the rendez-vous in the GPS! :) :)
F-Manny
I can't wait. I'll be in Albany the night before for a fraternity reunion...it's the perfect plan. that way if i miss alot I can blame it on having too much " fun" the night before...lol
Manny : Look forward to meeting you , i'll be down Saturday as well. Drew
Getting closer now. Can't wait guys. We will have a good time. Shot the course in Vernon Center today. Great course. The shoot next Sunday should be a blast. Hope to see some of you there. Prizes, raffles & $5 breakfast for those who are interested. The shooting is great, but meeting & talking to other trad guys really make it a joy.
Looking forward to meeting with you all!
That will be a nice ride from Montreal, like said I can pick someone up on the way South
F-Manny
looking good to go, rain is a good thing!
for those of you who want a solid address for map Quest use 141 Church Road Johnstown NY 12095 which is my mothers addy and she lives 1/2 mile down the road. also as stated if anyone needs to come up early on Saterday i can put tou up for the night.
Please take pictures, for those of us unable to attend - will be following the thread and wish all a good Stump hunt.
If we get 1/2 of the people that showed interest, it will be a big group. I have shot at a lot of leafs and so on, but never as many actual stumps as there are here. Rain or shine, it should be fun for all.
Don't forget about the trade blanket.
Ken,
i'll have to up date ya on the pm's as there are people coming that have not posted here yet!
ttt
ttt
beware you rotten stumps!!!!!!!!!!!!
Geting close.
Weather may not be great Sunday early but looks to clear out by noon. Izzy, phone is screwie, but I will call ya. New phone lasted all of a couple hrs. and doing same thing. Shawn
Kat,
You done good in getting this shoot rolling. It was a great time and as good a bunch of folks as could ever be hoped for. Thanks a bunch.
