Title: Build-along - First time making wood arrows - Pic heavy
Post by: MO Bow on January 23, 2011, 08:56:00 AM
I'm a newer member here and asked a few questions about cresting paint.  Ya'll asked for some pictures of the final product, so I figured I'd post pics of the process.

Keep in mind that this is the first time that I've ever done this, so I may mess something up...

Enjoy the pics...

Here are the 12 shafts that I picked out of 3 doz.  They're all matched to 70# spine.  Port Orford cedars.

Sizing them up to my bare-shaft arrow that I used to tune.  Shafts were cut to 28.5".

Each end was tapered using the Woodchuck.  Make for quick and easy tapering...

Taped off roughly where I wanted the stain and cap dip to meet.  I used Minwax Ebony stain.  Just did 1 coat because I didn't want it too dark.  Matches almost perfectly to my BW PSA Greybark.

Using a dip tube and gasket.  I used the 3Rivers brand of clear gasket lacquer for the finish.

Here they are, dipping complete.  White cap dip is the same brand of gasket lacquer, but white.  3 coats of each did the job.

This is my home-made cresting jig.  It ain't pretty, but it does the job.  Black and Decker cordless drill.  1x6 pine board and 4 drawer rollers that I got from Lowe's.  I pinched some paper towels between the wheels to prevent and rubbing or nicks in the finish.

Cresting complete.  I used Testors enamel for the job.  I did a black base coat the full width and painted the bright orange and gold pinstripes on top of the black.  In hindsight, I'll do separate bands in the future.  I had to thin the paints out and the black would bleed a little into the orange.  Plus, the orange will be brighter if painted on the white background of the cap dip.  Lesson learned.  Still looks pretty good though.

Now for the fletching.  Just got the multi-fletcher new for X-mas and I set it up according to the directions.  It required some adjustment because the arrows were canted way to far off center to get the feathers on correct.  The cock feathers had to be stripped and re-glued, so 6 of the arrows have a little bit of scarring where the bad glue line was.  I used 5" solid black shield cut cock feathers and orange and black barred for the other two.

Finished product...kind of.  I glued the points on last night and shot them a few times.  Found out that I'm an idiot.  I cut them about an inch too short for my bow and draw length.  They're flying too stiff, so I'll have to stick some heavier points on them.  I only have 125g points.

I'm actually thinking about placing an ad in the classifieds section.  Definitely not going to ask top dollar for these.

Sure they're straight as all get out and will fly great for someone shooting a heavier bow than me, but they're what I call Bar Hot.  They look awesome at a distance in partial lighting, but when you get close to them, they don't look as good.

Let me know what you think.

Thanks for reading along.

Honest to God, this is the first time I've done this.  I've spent the last 3 months or so doing a lot of research online and asking a ton of questions.

I bought a cheap set of brushes from the local hobby shop.  The wide black base was done with a #6 round brush.  The orange bands were painted with a #3 round brush.  The gold pinstripes were done with a #0.  To get a thinner line, I guess i could have used a 00, but it worked fine.

The shafts were cut to 28.5" and were spine matched to 70#.

I just put them up for sale on the Classifieds board...just looking to recoup costs for materials.

Just looking to get everyone's opinion.  Trying to see if I'll be able to turn this hobby into a small business and get my arrows out into more hunters' hands.

Take it easy.

I think they look beautiful, nice job.  I'ld try the heavier point before I sold them.

maineac, I would too, but I've got 100 125grain points laying around and 2 190s.  The weight is just right with the 125s.  I don't want to have to get used to shooting 2 different weight arrows, so I think I'll just sell them.

If nobody wants them, I'll pick up some more 190s and use them for stumping.

Nice job.  The best part about making them to short, is that now you can make more.

Too bad I dont have T-Rex arms like you or I would allow you to give them to me. Just a partial payment for all that I do for you. All joking aside, they look really good.

They look real fine to me. I'd like to see a picture up close of your homemade cresting machine without the paper towels in the rollers. Do you have the drill fastened down? That is a great idea. What brushes are you using? You should get a small chick feeder trough at the feed store for a spillage catch and you will have the "Ultimate Redneck Cresting Machine" I like it and you did a really great job!

tradshooter,

I'll get some more pics of the crsting machine after work today.  The drill isn't fastened down.  It's just laying there.  I've got a long enough piece of surgical tubing attached so I don't have to worry about alignment.

I used a #6 round brush for the big black band, a #3 round brush for the orange stripe and a #0 for the pinstripes.  They all came in a pack of 6 for about 8 bucks at the local hobby shop.  I like the round brushes because they come to a clean tip to keep the edge of the bands under control.

I had to mix a good amount of thinner into the paint to get good coverage without being too thick.  Unfortunately, the black underneath the orange bled through because of the thinner.  Next time I'm going to separate the bands.

I started on my second set last night.  This time, they're the right length.  30.5".  They'll look the same, but I'll separate the cresting bands over the white cap dip to prevent paint bleeding.

I should be done with them tonight, so I'll post as soon as I can.

Thanks.

Adam

Excellent job!    :clapper:

That's the trouble with wood arrows.  As soon as you finish a batch you have three different ideas you want to try.

Better order more shafts!

I agree.

I started another set a few days ago.  They're cut, sealed, crested and just waiting for feathers.  I ordered some more a few days ago and hopefully they come in soon.

After completing 1 full set, I'm addicted.  I might have to start making arrows for other people...help me feed my addiction!!!!
