Just getting into trad hunting. Missed a few deer this fall, but what a rush! I'm using 2119 arrows with a 175gr. VPA terminator BH. They fly great but should I use a heavier arrow for elk than what I have? 52# at 25.5" draw, 26 1/4" arrow, 510gr total weight.
865 grains

I think if you go with the 10+grains per pound formula you're on tract.
I shoot between 10-12 gpp for elk with high FOC these days. Still don't know if I'll use WW or Abowyer heads.
Mike
I like at least 10 gpp. with a good % of FOC.
The same that I practice with :) They are 680 grains out of a 62# longbow. Get close, keep them sharp, put the arrow in the right place.
I shoot carbons with 2 blade Magnus for a total of 640 grains out of a 54 lbs at 26" longbow. The penetration on a bull I took with this set-up was impressive.
I am just under the 10gpp so I guess I should be ok. Thanks for the input guys!
steadman, I have a eight year old, and sometimes they make more sense than we do. gotta lov em'
Paul, Ithink you have it going on. Just perfect to me. I like my 20 20 20s but They are a ditto. god Bless you all, Have a great day, Steve
I shot a 618 grain arrow with 250gr broadhead with FOC in the 20's on my elk this fall. I think also the 10gr formula is best.
Like most 10-11 gpp and not les than 600grs with 650 being my most common.
i like 10-11 gpp ... ull be fine if u keep ur shots at resonable distances and put the arrow where it counts.
I shoot and hunt with bows weighing between 53 and 58#.. I shot the 58#r's for elk with Gt5575 and a 250VPA's and they come in right at 585 gn, but then I use this same arow set up with all of my bows.
Gene
"Like most 10-11 gpp and not less than 600grs with 650 being my most common." :notworthy:
650 grains min. with about 28% FOC.
Kris
740 grains out of a #60 at my draw (30 inches)and an ACS CX. I don't want to lose one because of not enough penetration. Gary
584 grains out of a 55lb R/D longbow drawn to 30 inches. FOC 29.7%. It took me 2 years and a lot of money to work these arrows up. For dangerous game as in Grizzly, and Large African game I am planning to hunt, I am shooting 650 grain arrows out of the same bow at 654 grains, FOC 22%.
The next time I hunt elk or moose, I'll likely use the same arrows I was successful with last time on those two species -- 500-grain carbons with 125-grain 2-blade heads.
The last bull I killed was with a 640 grain cedar tipped with a woodsman, out of a 58# bow. I got a pass-through with the head, not all the arrow.
I like 550-650 grain arrows with my bows in the 56#-59# class.
same arrow I shoot for everything, wether it's bunnies and squirrels or Moose and Brownies. 655 grains at 29% FOC.
650-700 with +20 FOC; 54lb longbow and 4 blade Eskimo. Plan to try WW
All my arrows weigh about the same 600- 625 gns.
I use the same setup as Bjorn, with good success.
I like 600.You need to double lung em,as they are tough animals that have an incredible instinct to suvive.Id like to see you get your weight up to 550 anyway.Once again also, and I only know this from Tradgang here, but when it comes to arrows, anything Bjorn says is right on!Mr.Stefano is expert too.
Only killed one - a mature cow. 450gr worked great and I would use it again.
I never knew about FOC till now, Thanks! I am at 19% FOC. Did I read wrong or don't you want the FOC to be lower for better penetration.
Last thread on this subject, a good point was made for arrows <600gr for bows in the low to mid #50's! Ive made up 2 doz arrows that i plan to use for everything this year, and it goes like this...KK German Mountain Pine arrows that i soaked in Watco for 6 days, then a few hand rubbed coats of spar urethane, fletch, and a 160gr tip! They came out to 675-685gr with about 13.somethin' FOC! Should be a bonafide killer outta my #55 Bear Montana longbow! Love threads like this as its goin to be my first elk hunt this year!
will a 125 gr head be sufficient to take these animals?
Im sure a 125gr head has killed several thousand elk, but usually with a heavy arrow comes a heavy head!
liv2hunt - Studies show that measureable pentetration gains start at 19% FOC. FOC increase above 19% doesn't not appear to have a linear relationship.
For ex. - each 1% gain above 19% up to ~25%, may yield up to ~5% increase in penetration where as each 1% gain over 19% to ~32% Ultra-EFOC may yield up to an ~7% gain. This information is still being further evaluated.
What appears quite visible is as FOC continues to increase above 19% the pentration increase percentage is increasing at an increasing higher rate.
Friend, thanks for the info! I am new to trad and trying to gain info. much appreciated!
Even though there are few on this site who "think" they are superior to us that are trying to learn. They must realize that we are all in fact equal and will be judged in the end. My days on this site are finished, as for I am only trying to gather information on bare bows to better myself and my two sons. The administration of this site does not like my threads and I can feel free to speak elsewhere. I thought this would be a good place to learn. I should have listen to others when I was told that this site does not offer one a chance. To all those members good luck and farewell. To the others, you will be judged and I wish you luck.
What's the deal with this? I believe I read every post on this thread and didn't see anything to warrant an attitude like this.
Stating that a thread is a dead horse and has been beat to death sounds like a negative comment to me, and believe me I have heard my share of negative comments.
The guy asking the question is new and trying to learn the ins and out of traditional archery, give him a break admin.
I must say I'm not surprised.
Really is a shame to push away a newby with the typical elitist attitude we trad guys get accused of so much. I guess theres some truth to it. Sad. Oh well liv2hunt your in good company.
Alot of good fellas here, sad theres a few that are rude. Thats life I suppose.
Hey LUCKYMAN hows it going. Been a while since we spoke. Why did you change your handle ?
Wow you boys are being a little to sensitive to quote R Lee Ermey "maybe you guys could skip off to mamby pamby land and get a little self confidence" if you don't want help don't asked there was nothing wrong with anyone posted but yours.
Before everyone starts judging the admin click on Liv2 hunts name and read his profile. Attitude is super negative. Sometimes we do not see everything that is said or done./
CA BOWHUNTER,
Check a few threads back, liv2hunts response is based on another thread just to clarify.
I don't suppose he thinks it's beating a dead horse.
Sorta like a baby asking how to walk and you tell him to shut up.
Possibly just lost a new trad hunter to arrogance.
What's his profile have to do with how is legitament question was answered. If his profile is an issue shouldn't that be dealt with through PM. I see nothing he's posted as negative or offensive.
Come on.
Name: nonyabusiness, That is a terrible attitude. It has nothing to do with this thread . However it has everything to do with respect to the forum and the people on this forum. I did not say it is why . Maybe he is a bit thin skinned though.
From what we can read on this thread he got respectful and thorough answers to his questions. If he has a problem on another thread or even another forum, perhaps it should stay there since it has nothing to do with this one. I also highly doubt what happens on this or any other forum will effect whether or not someone is or becomes a trad archer. If so then they are doing it for the wrong reasons.JMHO.
My point is I was feeling kind of sympathetic until I checked to see what his name was and where he lived. Not now.
God Bless you all Steve
What happened ?????
I just read this again and ????

your on track and should do fine with that set up, especially if your getting perfect flight. I'm always for heavy is best, but flight is important. I got a complete pass through on a moose with a 58 pound recurve and 600grn arrow, and magnus 175gr head including going through the entering rib.
Keep em close.
This is just another example of the garbage/spam we have to put up with. Bogus registration.
jct, ....you've had a bug up your a$$ for me and Trad Gang ever since Sam Roberts changed the Paradise......
Funny, you haven't posted in over a year, and now you take a jab at us on this thread....with it a bogus registration.....maybe you were in on it.
Time for you to move on. ....I hope you can find a place or way to get rid of all your bitterness.

I'll respectfully disagree with that one. (sorry) This heavy head syndrome just started a few years ago. Before that, it was hard to find anyone shooting over 135gr.
Duh, I re-read your statement. S L O W E R this time. I agree that several thousands of elk have been killed with a 125
Is there a sheepish grin in the gremlins?
Haha, no problem Biggie!!! Been away from this one for a while, whats the deal with all the shots at the top! Ive read this whole thread, and there are some very valuable info on here for equipment recommendations! Its not a matter of superiority, but a matter of experience in my mind, and ill take that experienced prowess from all you fellow Tradgangers every time!!!
10-12 GPP works the best for me!
My whitetail set up is 55lb bow 600grain arrow three blade head. For elk I just switch to a two blade head and use the same total arrow weight of 600grains. Switching arrow weights has cost me critters in the past, mostly switching back to lighter arrow after elk hunts.
Mine are 10.6 gpp.
Im 12.36gpp if anyone cares!!!
I use almost the same set up. 51# with 510 grn arrow with sharp 2-blade.
