A parent came to our archery club to see if we could help his 12 year old handicapped son shoot a bow. This is the issue. Because of a birth defect he is missing his right hand mid way between his elbow and wrist. He would pull a bow left handed. The problem is figuring out how he can hold the bow with his right arm. Does anyone have any experience or ideas on how we go about doing this?
I saw a photo of an Aussie lass who shot her tradbow using a mouth release aide because of similar circumstances.

Contact New York Bowhunters. They have a Physically Challenged Committee and have been helping those with disabilities through the use of modified equipment for some time now.

The host of KY Dept. of Fish and Wildlife Resources' weekly TV show lost the use of his right hand in a motorcycle accident years ago. He shoots a bow using a bite-assist tied on to the string. Attached is his blurb from the KDFWR site:

I've worked with these folks in the past and they do have adaptive equipment. If you see nothing on their website that may help- CALL THEM. I highly recommend these folks! Good Luck and....thanks

A back tension release would work.Does he need a bow I have a few fiberglass low poundage ones I could send you.
As posted above by ike 403 KDFG would be a good contact. Also try Ky Afield he works with them alot,he has put on demos on their TV show. I might add he is a very good shot too.

Suggest a carefully constructed prosthesis which will hold the bow tightly in his right hand. Might even be whittled out of wood or otherwise. No need to spend big bucks. My friend has a leg prostesis he sticks his leg stump in to play golf.

Kent, I called Drew, he is going to help us out! He was a super nice guy to talk too! I really appreciate all the input guys! It just goes to show you how special this place really is. :) I will try and keep everyone posted on the young mans progress!
Our club, has two physically challenged shooters. One lost his right arm, and changed to shooting left handed with a prosthetic. He hold the bow with the prosthetic, and shoots with his fingers (and he's one heck of a shot!) The other guy, shoots with his mouth as does Tim Farmer of KY Afield (as has been mentioned).
