Turkey feathers for flu-flu's, will the tail/fan feathers work better? Or just a uncut wing? Both?
Also, is there a good way to color the feathers? The brown doesn't show up good, and I lose every arrow I shoot at squirrels in trees. (Not that I take too many tree shots). I was thinking of spray painting them flo.orange, arrow and all, but not sure if the paint would interfere with the function of the feathers. Thanks.
i know you can dye them in coolade. as for flu flus i dont think it matters. stringstetcher will chime in on this one and tell ya whats what
You can use feathers from any large bird. The wing feathers of turkeys are more durable and will last longer than the tail feathers. You can use them though. Dyeing brown will be difficult to brighten IMO. You could possibly try fur tracers. They have them in bright colors. Good luck.

When I went to visit my dad he wanted me to make him a spiral flu flu to shoot. We didn't have any feathers at the house but dad came up with an idea. A neighbor down the road had peacocks. he asked if one of their tailfeathers would work. I said I don't know but lets give it a try.
We got the tail feather and I spilt the quill and wrapped it onto the shaft. Turned out really nice and kind of cool to boot.
In short I know peacock tail feathers work for a spiral flu flu.
