i've shot trad since 78 and love it like no other thing I do. My youngest son started shooting a bow at 4. As he has grown older he just didn't want to shoot much. I started him out on a compound as I wanted him to take an interest in archery an get some confidence. He is 13 now and told me dad, this isn't fun anymore. I was devastated that this is my last son at home and he doesn't have the love of archery like I do. What he was trying to tell me is this compound just isn't doing it for me. He said he wanted to start shooting trad bows like I do. So I picked him up a recurve and he started shooting some of my arrows. The boy is good. Brings a tear to my eyes that he has made this choice on his own and we will share this love together of archery. Anyone elses son or daughter made that choice to shoot trad like you do. It's the greatest feeling in the world. Thank you Shawn Michael for making daddy proud. (http://i1220.photobucket.com/albums/dd444/stick-um/mikespics008-1.jpg)

GREAT !!! hope I can post a pic like this of my son one day

Mike,
I love to hear the stories of kids following their parents in good things. I also have had the greatest love for archery since forever....and like you I had high hopes of teaching my son Andy the finer points of hunting with trad equipment. We will now often shoot together when he can find the time. It's a great time together...
Great job dad!!
Lucky man, lucky son!
Congratulations, perhaps you and he can escape to the HH shoot in Al.this June.Shawn would have the time of his life!

Thank you for sharing with us.
God bless,Mudd
Congrata, nothing like having a son to enjoy doin it the right way with you.I am lucky to have 3 sons to enjoy our sport with.2recurve shooters and a longbower
any time you can find a common interest with a son it is a blessing.congrats
For me it was the other way around! I was always shooting bows from a very early age. I started with hand me down recurves and I moved then to "bows with wheels". I shot them for quite some time. In the last 9 years I have more or less stopped shooting on a reagular basis. My son will turn 9 in June and four years ago he told me he wanted a bow for christmas and this sparked my intrest back into shooting the bow. He told me he wanted a bow with out wheels. Santa brought him a nice little "bow with out wheels" and some arrows. that same year for my birthday I received my first longbow from my girlfriend.
Now my son (8), daughter(6) and my girlfriend(better not say) all shoot traditonal equipment and love every bit of it. I could not ask for anything better to have my loved ones share and enjoy this fun thing in life with me.
I am in the same boat and it's a great feeling.Congrats to him for finding his way home. And congrats to you for showing him the path he should take.
Congratulations to both of you.
You have every reason to be proud.
My son has given up his compound, but has yet to pick traditional.
College baseball, and studies take most of his time. Some day maybe.
Thats a great feeling knowing your son wants to follow in your footsteps, hope he has many happy memories of the experience.
Congrats now you better hide your arrows and bows, Shawn keep at it
That's cool,happy for you.
good stuff :campfire:
I was a devout compound shooter. I just dabbled w/ a longbow. My son could care less about shooting a compound when he saw me trying to shoot trad. equipment he wanted to try it. We started going to 3D events. Then he wanted to hunt with a longbow and called me a wimp for using my compound. So I switched and have not looked back best move I have made.LCH
My boy is 12, been shooting one since he was 6 or 7. He has always shot a recurve. Tryed to get him to try other things, but he don't want to. That's fine with me, I love it when he hangs with old dad. We do alot of stumpin and shootin together.. I hope it always stays that way!! Jason
Excellent!
I think you are a very lucky man. I have a 9 year old grand daughter who is so far loving the Bow. Good luck Don
I just got my 4 year old daughter her first bow for Christmas. I couldn't believe how proud I was when she started hitting the target in the basement or how quickly she has taken to it. Hope I have pictures like yours when she is 13. Thanks for sharing!
That IS a hero pic.
I applaud all of you parents that posted here so far for taking the time to work with your children. They are, as I am sure all of you know, our future.
This is just another area in which TG'ers shine...
Good stuff
i was the other way around! i started my dad on traditional. my dad started me out on compounds when i was 7 or 8 and when i was 13 or so i was wanting to get started into traditional but he wouldnt buy it. well it was about a year and a half ago that i brought it back up and i bought my first trad bow. he still wasnt buying it very much. now he's putting up his compound and says we're going out with longbows next deer season. i couldnt agree more. and im ready for next bow season to get here already. great to see your son getting into it too!!
