Title: 3D shoot ?
Post by: fling on January 10, 2011, 01:13:00 PM
what would you say is the average distance at a traditional 3D shoot. a friend of mine who shoots compound is allways inviting me to 3D shoots. he says most of the target are about 40-50 yards with some out to 80yards. would love to go but that is way out of my range. just curious about the average range at a traditional 3D shoot.

10-30 yards. Most are setup pretty close for traditional shooters. 3D shoots are great fun. Do go. Mark your misses well.. it can be easy to lose the arrows.

We used to have a "Traditional/Bare Bow" stake and a "Sights" stake for each target.  Most of the bare bow were 15 to 25 yards.  You don't have to shoot from the stake if you're not going to turn in your card for prizes.

If they put you at 50 yards sneak up on it.  If anyone says anything say: "Shhhh!  I'm stalking it."

Most of the shoots I go too have a 25 yard max for trad class. But they will sometimes have a few out close to 30.

30 yards is the IBO limit for Traditional.

Here in the Netherlands the distances vary between 12 yards (very few) till 60 yards, but I would say the average is on 30-40 yards.
I get the impression the distances are becoming bigger each year.

Here in Oregon, competition shoots are usually set up with the youth stakes the closest, followed by a trad stake, and then the farthest is the compound stake.

A lot of the fun shoots (no scoring) only have a compound stake and trad guys just move to a comfortable range.

I usually don't go to 3D shoots to keep score, so as long as the shot is safe, I pick my own spot.  I treat most shots like I would if I were out hunting.

Hello. Ive gone to a few wheel shoots and as long as your going to have fun you will have lots of it. The ones ive been to i notice that after about 4 to 5 targets i get dialed in and do rather well. You should see the looks you get when you drop one in the spot at 65 yards. I remember one shoot they had a 50 yard running pig. I took a shot in the dark and put my point on the tip of his ear and droped two arrows in the 10 ring. Them wheel guys were freakin and i just acted as if it was an every day thing.

Trad shoots here in Cali are normaly 10 to 35 with a couple longer tosed in and one long one and a steel target here and there.

I usually only go to traditional only shoots anymore and shot distances are generally 10 - 30 yards.  Like was said above, shoot from where you like and don't worry about turning in a score card.

The smaller the target the closer it is and visa versa.  Groundhogs at 10 yards and moose and elk at 50 yards.  Buffalo at 60 yards.

We never shoot from were we like! Here the tournaments are real tournaments and everybody shoots them from the official distances.

Vermonster got it, IBO max is 30,however most clubs are clueless in our area probably due to lack of traditional involvment.I'll do like Frank and shoot from where I choose or Me and the other trads agree on a questionable distance. One thing for sure trad guys always have more fun.If you want an unbiased view find another forum!Shootem straight.

let's keep this thread in its proper perspective for the powwow forum.

basically, there are 2 ways to look at 3d shoots - hunting and competitive.  you can't do both.  no you can't!  we are trad bowhunters, no?  then competition takes a backseat to practice for killing kritters.

with that said, i attend 3d shoots as if i'm hunting, with a hunting weight bow and compatible hunting weight arrows.  i don't shoot for score, i shoot to kill.  one arrow.  one shot.  dead foam critter - hopefully.

mostly, i'll move up and shoot at MY realistic hunting distance, and shoot from cover - not upright target style.

i'm not a target archer.  i'm a bowhunter.  having been the former in a very serious way for decades - there ARE big differences 'tween the two, indeed.  ymmv.

In our area, the max distance for trad is usually 25-30 yds.
