Braved the cold Saturday Evening and was able to score on a nice big doe. She'll be hanging for a week or so in the barn until it's warm enough to butcher her as she's froze solid now! 17 degrees Sat evening and the wind was biting like crazy (20 mph gusts), but I really didn't get that cold as I dressed in good layers.
Layer 1 Gander Mtn Polar fleece thermals,
Layer 2 fleece bottoms and APX2 fleece top,
Layer 3 - 18 yo insulated bibs and a down vest (Vest came from Salvation Army for $5, but man is it warm!)
Layer 4 on top only..... I carry in my Parka and put it on in the stand...Great new coat..sure cuts the wind. Russell Outdoors Parka..
Head Layer Fleece balaklava w/ tobogan on top of that.
Feet Lacross 1200gm boots w/ 2 pairs of Merino wool socks.
I felt like that kid on "A Christmass Story"....LMAO...
A actually stayed fairly warm and comfortable other than my eyes watering from the wind.
Had 2 does and a fawn come in at 5:30 and made a picture perfect shot on the first one to give me a braodside shot at about 18 yds. Didn't get full penetration as it angled forward and hit the offside front leg. Watched her go down 50 yds away.
I was actually able to come to full draw without the normal cold weather problems. Hand warmers in my parka pockets and just wearing a pair of deer hide leather work type gloves.
Great times!

Great job! Re-size pic and give us a looksee. :clapper:
I did have one issue to contend with that night. My son Jared (12) got to asking if I thought she was pregnant when I was about to field dress her. To which I said...."lets see"...knowing full well that most every doe I've shot during the KY late season is.
I field dress her and he took his flashlight and a stick and poked around until he found the sack and 4+" fetus. He was absolutely imazed! He said "Dad...you're right...life does begin at conception"....
I went up the hill to try and bring an atv down thru the woods to get her and he told me "Dad...that's it...I've decided to be a Biologist...this is what I want to do"
I really hope he does as I believe this would be a rewarding life for him.....

So, did you have five doe tags? If you'd have asked me when I was 10 that's where I thought I was heading.
Surprise, surprise.
Great job hanging in there Mike. Jared has the smarts for it, I bet he would enjoy it.
LOL...Sorry StumpK.....I should have written that better....she only had one...4" long or so.
Old doe...most around me carry at least 2 fawns, but she did only have one.

I believe it's just covered up w/ the snow a little. She looked normal...
Nice job.
Great job.
Congratulations... there's one more weekend left to hunt up here, but I'm out due to shoulder injury. If I wasn't, I'd brave the cold and give it a try... since it worked for you!

Try as I have to find another bow that I enjoy hunting w/ as much as that bow...I've yet to find one. She is deffinately my "go to" and is a proven killer of critters! I couldn't start to put a number on them. Maybe it's the bow...maybe it's all in my head...but I'm so confident w/ that bow in my hands. It's just one less thing to think about out there.
She ain't pretty...and she has a ton of battle scars, but daggonit she is beautiful to me!
Congrats! Still 8 and a hlaf months til we can hunt again. This helps pass the time though
LoweBow,hey if it works it works, confidence means a lot.

Nice doe LoweBow! Those red cheeks are probably the best way for us to gauge just really how cold it was... All I can say is Brrrrrrrrrr! You "da man" for sticking it out!
Congrats bud! :clapper:
That's some serious hunting. And I had already talked myself out of going this weekend. I may have to rethink it. Congrats
Congrats Lowebow!Plus great story of the education with your son!

way to go. That hard quartering away is my favorite shot. They don't go far. It must just scramble everything inside..
Excellent!
Conratulations! Nice job and some true grit to be out there.
Wow! 17 degrees and windy! That was brave indeed. Nice shot....dedicated hunter..
Thanks fellas. Like they always say....you can't kill em on the couch!
I finally learned a few years ago that if you dress properly cold weather ain't as tough on you. Not that the weather we get here in Ky is cold by many's standards..LOL
