Just got home from 5 days of hog hunting with RC and Steve Grice (Jacobsladder) down on Ft Stewart GA. A bit tired from the 1200 mile drive home, most of it it in a snow storm that started around the Ashland NC area. I expected snow once we got to Ohio but NC, TN and Ky?
RC is the real deal. He's a hunter, not just a guy that likes to hunt. Animals are in trouble when he steps in to the woods and I learned more about pig hunting in the time spent with him than I have on all my other pig hunts and I've been on a bunch.
More stories about the hunt later after I take care of business around the house.
This is a story I've just got to hear!!!
:campfire: :archer:
OK! Now I'm ready,....... bring it!!
Thanks in advance!
God bless,Mudd
Ok we need the next chapter. :coffee:
Been looking forward to this one.
:campfire:
Do tell, I have a hunt planed next month to the same location with Apex Predator. I am as excited as a kid on Christmas morning.
:campfire:
My legs will not let me do some of the hunt's I would love to do. The next best thing are your story's. Bring it on.
Looking forward to the stories of the hunt! RC is a true woodsman, I'll bet it was great hunting with him!
look forward to hearing more ! I hope you have pictures!
Had a great time hunting with RC and CJ.... RC is a great guide and was very patient answering all of my stupid questions about hogs..He's a heck of a shot too! Here's a pick of R.C. and C.J. standing next to a big oak just outside of one of RC's honey holes........

OK, sorry about that. I had more emails from work to answer than I cared for. Some moch for PTO.
Steve and I pulled into Hanesville GA about noon on Monday the 6th. Wal-Mart sold license's so we stopped there first. I feel sorry for folks in GA that don't have humans avalible to process a small game license. Wal-mart is one of those places. An hour or so later we got tags and then it was to the Ft Stewart permit office to get hunting permits. Long story short, Ft Stewart has rules, lots of them. Obey the rules, get your permits, call in to hunt, call out when done and it's a breeze. Fail to follow the rules and life is not a breeze. Roberts help in this department was a blessing.
Tuesday morning rolls around and 7am sharp RC shows up at our camp site. I liked him right off when he ripped me about my small backbacking tent I'd brought asking if it was my kids tent. My kinda guy. Off to the woods and at 8:30 off to my right 6 or 7 pigs are scooting through the bush 100 yards off. They had someplace to be and I couldn't catch up to them but it was a great way to start off the day.
Enjoyed these Fellers company.I really like the people I meet on these hunts. So far they have all been good Folks.
I always have a fear of taking Folks hunting that have traveled a long way and bombing out. Not seeing anything. Not the case on this trip or any other for that matter. I met CJ at 7:00 on Tuesday Morning and by 8:30 we were looking at pork in the swamp. I don`t want to tell these fellers tales for`m so maybe they`ll get on with it.
I will say that Winter time is the worst time to get after pork here. I`m sure Ray will vouch for this as well but a fella will get chances and shots . We had planned this hunt for Sept/Oct but due to work CJ asked to come later and that was good for me. actually worked out for the better because I tore my Calf muscle about that time.
I will say this. CJ and I got on one of the top 5 Big Boars I`ve ever been on in the swamp. Steve had pork at....5 yards and we all had fun .The beauty of these hunts I do on public land is that both of these fellas can come back as many times as they want till next year for just the price of gas. Tags run for a year to the date they were bought. From now till around Nov it only gets better then the deer hunting pressure makes it tough.Good Friends made on this trip that I look forward to hunting with again.
I am gonna post a swap hunt on that forum if any of you guys are interested. RC
Can't wait to hear the rest of this tale...but it's a good one!
Big pigs at dusk look just like big logs at 30 yards even to the a swamper. Until they turn sideways and the big log turns into a big, big pig.
I love these hog stories.
:campfire: :coffee:
:biglaugh:
Yep....i had pork at 5 yds.... ran a bunch into a thicket....had sows hollern on both sides of me at 5 yds...too bad i couldnt see them... Just a black outline in the brush that looked like a blob... The pigs were squirting thru a 3 foot path from one side of the thicket to the next... they were on the move and 1 little guy decided to stop and face me.....Lesson #1 to a hog hunting newbie.......If a small one faces you at 10 yds.... drill it ...... little booger squirted back in the thicket and that was my only decent shot opportunity of the night....... But being surrounded by 30 pigs in a thicket with low light, with boars bumpin sows and hollern loud enough to make you deaf had this michigan boy checkin his drawers on the way back to the truck. :)
That's a spooky sound for us northern boys.First time i heard a pig let out that squeal i wet my pants.
I could tell Steve was very excited as he talked about the evening.Pig hunting is fun...if you don`t believe me ask him.RC
Now that made me chuckle! :campfire:
I forgot to mention .....stay clear of that chinese joint in Hanesville....... spent 1 night squirting out both ends....and missed a morning hunt..... :readit: :help:

I wa stationed at Ft. Stewart back in the 60's before we were sent to Vietnam. Never saw any hogs but the snakes were terrible.
Sounds like a great time. Keep it coming!
RC showed us hog spots through out the base that were really rooted up and we saw pigs every day. As Robert said, this was about the worse time of year to go but it looked pretty good to Steve and I. On Thursday not to far from where RC and I saw pigs the first day I spot 10 or so hogs doing there thing in a thicket. I was by myself and they let me get to within 25 yards and one about 50lbs walks out to look me over. From my knees, 25 yards broardside and the arrow goes over his back. At least I got some shooting in.
Later that day at about sun down, Steve was working a herd when I bumped into him as I was heading to the truck. A pile of hogs were in a field close to the road so I hot footed it out to the road and down a ways just as they were crossing. Two long shots as they scooted across were both high again. Dang that was fun.
RC why do you say that winter is the worst time hunt hogs?I dont know hardly anything about hog hunting just trying to pick your brain. :dunno:
Sounds like a great hunt!! I'd love to take my Big Jim Thunderchild back to where it came from to chase hogs in the swamp.....
Thanks for sharing :)

Sounds like a great time. The only hogs I ever see have wannabees in leather vests riding them.

You could substitue the word Hanesville for just about any U.S. City name.

Just a presumption on my part, but I would say that deer hunters have the hogs all spooked and not easily paterened

Yep, the orange army has been invading their territory for three straight months around here. They are largely nocturnal right now. A few weeks after deer season is over they will start moving more in the daylight.
What Marty said.
The big pig CJ and I got on the one afternoon was a very close call.WE were "hanging" out in a spot I have had a lot of good luck in on past hunts. We heard some squeeling and it was a bit confusing. I heard it in one direction and CJ in the other.Easy explanation...two different groups of pork.We stood there trying to figure it out when we heard one kinda close. We headed for the pork.We knew they were close and we were sneaking but not stalking. I looked up at about 35 yards and there is a BIG Black stump. Its getting late and I look at it a second and it don`t move. CJ does the same...Big Stump. We press on a bit litening for the pigs we heard in here and then the BIG Stump stands up and starts clicking his teeth. I`m in front of CJ so I drop down to allow him room for a shot if one presents itself and the Big pig and his Buddy ease off without giving CJ the shot he wants. BIG BOAR. If I had thought pig instead of stump we could have maybe injuned up on him but I thought it was a stump. My Bad.RC
All in all in was a great time with great people and we were able to help the kids at St Judes. For 2011 bid high fellas for the next hunt, it is well worth it.
Thanks again RC,
CJ
Mistaking a big hog for a big black stump.......low light........I guess it's understandable.
NO WAY! I taught you better than that RC!!!!
Just kidding, I've done it too
I had two excellent opportunties.... ended up missing a small one at about 20 yds trying to catch up with the rest of the group..... The pigs were there , the sign was there, and the swamps are beautiful....Lateseason hunting anywhere is always a tad harder because the game has been pressured and the deer were extremely jumpy. I will be back for sure. This was the most exciting hunting this northern boy has had. Now I can see what all the fuss is about hunting these pigs......and R.C. is as fine as they come... A true woodsman and gentleman......
Again I enjoyed you fellas company and look forward to it again. I`m looking forward to Turkey season and snapped this pic on the third morning when TJ and Steve hunted together and I hunted my Turkey Drain. Can`t wait till March...Look in the center of the pic standing on the horizontal limb. RC

Great story and pictures guys! Thanks for taking us along!
Hats off to RC. He does this for the kids of St. Jude every year. Two things for sure, he has a big heart and he knows pigs. Congrats to all and thanks for sharing.
Great story and thanks for sharing. Spotted the limb chicken RC
Yep....you addicted now....I remember taking to PA boys on a St Judes hunt....and they got bit bad too.
Bet you are already planning anther hog hunt!!! :D
One good thing about hunting the Fort this time of yesr is no snakes, gators and skeeters to worry about. Those 3 things plus the heat can be nearly unbearable, especially to those from up north, when the hunting is great - RC seems to be immune to it.
One of the most interesting things about hunting there is how the animals react to the target practice. Kinda distracting to me when the machine guns open up nearby, but the hogs don't even care. Also interesting when a wayward tank comes blasting through a firebreak or road, where they are not 'sposed to be. And I've had hogs rooting right around the tent at night in the base campground. Very interesting place.
Thanks for the answer.Hog hunting is a rush.I cant wait to go again.
I knew Fort Benning had a lot of pigs...i guess Fort Stewart has a lot as well.
