Title: Locust Beans ?
Post by: NoCams on January 08, 2011, 11:37:00 PM
Found a huge grove of locust trees and was wondering when and if the best time is to hunt them ? Heard that deer liked the beans but never have hunted them.

They eat them around here.  Cold, crops gone, acorns depleted. . .  time for locust pods!

You better hunt them today since it is the last day of deer season! Hallelujah! Sorry, little game warden humor. Well, technically you can go with Mason next weekend for the last juvenile hunt.

Nathan, we also found a, "Deer Graveyard ", here in this grove of locust trees. At least a dozen deer carcasses in a 200 yd square area. Not a single buck skull, all does ? Bones were pretty clean except for very end of lower legs still had hair on them. I looked at the hooves to see if they had sloughed off but they looked normal. Blue tongue ?

We did find droppings that looked like they were full of the locust beans. I was just wondering from those with experience if this could be a gold mine or specifically what time of year is best for locust bean pods to be eaten by the deer ? Today is last day for us so we will go back to this spot early next year and see how it turns out ?

Man that's a bummer about the dead ones...

On my place, the deer hit the locust pods randomly.  And they really only start when the acorns are gone...

If you don't have much else for a food source close by, then it might be a honey hole.  You will probably have to put some time in watching or a game cam to figure out the best time to hunt it.
