Title: Removing tape residue

A buddy just picked up an old kodiak that has had tape on it for several years. What's the best way to remove the residue without damaging the finish? Thanks in advance...

WD40 or Goof Off. Do a little test spot first to make sure you don't make a bigger mess.

I used Goof Off on a Damon Howatt I picked up the was covered in camo tape. It worked well for me.

Goof-Off has always worked for me to get tape residue off.

I have used both wd-40, goof-off, and flitz metal polish (I like the flitz the best).  With wd-40, I spray it on the rag, then wipe it on the bow rather than spray it on the bow.  You can control how much you get on stuff that way.

Like some of the other fellas, I have always used wd-40 with excellent results.

I guess the products mentioned above work real well, likely better than my way.  That said, I can tell you I recieved a bow for my daughter a couple of years ago and it was ripe with tape residue that had been on for years.  I did not know what to do, so I took nail polish remover (with a wife and daughter I have plenty around)and used that.  The finish is beautiful and all the tape ... after lots of rubbing with cotton balls and N.P.remover, all the sticky crap came off.  The bow now looks incredible.

So I guess if you do not have Goof Off or WD-40, you can try nail polish remover.

Depends on the type of glue. Zippo lighter fluid cleans some, acetone others, white spirit, paint thinners, the list is long. Always test first as some will strip the surface and damage the wood. Warm soapy water is the gentlest and where I usually start.

I hear that mosquito repellant containing DEET will remove tape residue.  :knothead:

Old tape residue can be harder to remove than old oil paint. Always start with the least invasive first; and the old Fullerplast may be less strong than the tape residue you are trying to remove. Consider leaving it alone unless your name is bowdoc.

Auyo body supply stores sell a product for removing pin stripe tape residue.  I've used it on a few different bows and it does the job without harming the finish.  Jack

Alcohol and brass wool done lightly may help.
