way cool i do like the haversack
-
Lookin dapper!
From his lodge went Hiawatha,
Dressed for travel, armed for hunting;
Dressed in deer-skin shirt and leggings,
Richly wrought with quills and wampum;
On his head his eagle-feathers,
Round his waist his belt of wampum,
In his hand his bow of ash-wood,
Strung with sinews of the reindeer;
In his quiver oaken arrows,
Tipped with jasper, winged with feathers;
With his mittens, Minjekahwun,
With his moccasins enchanted.
-
Great look!
I would make a suggestion to make your look perfect.
Ditch the camo pants or at least minimize them with leggings.
A solid olive green trouser would be awesome added to the outfit.
I am just one person and only have one opinion so don't give this post any more weight than it deserves.
Thank you for sharing.
I give the outfit an overall grade of an A but could be A+.
God bless,Mudd

Speechless
-
Looks like a winner to me.
-
lpcjon2: I know what you mean. The things we'll do for our spouses, sheeeesh! :D
-
Haversack is awful bright colored
-
nice.............
-
Dave, I'm gonna wax the haversack and that'll darken it up a bit. Plus with use over the spring/summer, I figure it'll be about ready for hunting season.
-
I think one of Mudd's style hat will go great with that look
-
Oh yeah!! you gotta get a hat from MUDD!! Then it'll be perfect!
-
Roy suggested a trade off but, I burned up my wifes sewing machine making this last one. I'll need to get some more material and then buy her a new machine. She wants a heavier duty one for her birthday next month then, I'll see if Roy wants to make that trade. :)
-
Green tights, Robin Hood hat and a pencil mustache and you are Errol Flynn. :)
-
I don't even know what a haversack is. Good luck killin' stuff with it, though.
-
Like MUDD would say WOW and double WOW!!
-
pdk25: A haversack is the bag hanging from my right side. It is used to hold essentials while afield. This one is made with all period correct materials.
-
Guess me & pdk are the only ones that don't know what a haversack is. I thought it was the shirt; but, it's dark already. The bag is cool but pretty distinguishable. It could use some dark. Cool anyway. I too would vote for some deerskin leggings. The Hill goes good w/anything.
-
Here on Tradgang, we all love it... but just to be sure that we have taste, you should show up at a major 3D competition for a second opinion.
-
lookin good buddy,steve

I've done it before, the other shooters might have been jealous of my kilt or buckskins but they were nice about it.
TW is just the man to show'em how a real traditional bowhunter should look when properly attired.
God bless,Mudd
-
I am glad to know that I am not the only one who thought the haversack was the shirt....
However, what do you put in it?
-
Thanks Roy! I've got no qualms in wearing that attire to a 3D shoot. I like to make my own trails and go as I see fit.
Gen273: I keep my stringer, flint and steel, compass, pocket Bible, tags, wind powder, snacks, lint mix from my dryer for fire making, map and just about anything else a person can think of to stay alive in the woods.
Folks have been caring them since before this Nation was a Nation.
-
Nice work, and the look is just right.
-
+1 for a Robin Hood hat from Mudd...
-
I just choked on my cheese popcorn trying to picture Mudd in a kilt! :p Whoa mama!
-
Wannabe1, that is neat and Thanks for the info!

Try to keep your coke or other drinks away while viewing..lol

I also like the haversack...practical in days-gone-by.. :saywhat:
-
Roy, now that's what I'm talking about! Love it. :biglaugh:
Semo: The shirt is one of Ron LaClairs long hunter pull overs. I love it and it surely will keep you warm on a cold day!
-
Looking good man. Don't listen to these haters - that stuff is pure dynamite in the deer woods. I think our hunting kits were separated at birth...
It wasn't quite cool enough that day for my longhunter shirt or my GFA pullover but I'm usually rocking one or the other (or both when it's really cold).
-
Isn't a haversack one of those things the kids kick around the parking lot at the 7-11???
-
Deer don't mind being shot by Calvin Klein or Paco Raban, they just don't to get caught.Nice medieval look set up.
-
Looks Good.
-
I have found that if a hunter dresses properly then
you can just "ugly" their small game down.
You just have to be careful how outlandish you take it because you can tear them up too badly sometimes...lol
God bless,Mudd
-
Not sure about a kilt but spent alot of time in a breech clout and a pair of leggins (yes your safe I won't share that image). But Mudd that was one image I was fighting visualizing. Wannabe I think your outfit will work great. Darken the bag with some walnut hull dye if needed then wax it and your good to go. But green wool pants would work really great out there come hunting season.
-
Mudd,
Your wife is going to be PISSED when she sees what you did to the tablecloth. (Psssst - your sporran is open!)
First thing the local native Nations did when trade opened was to lose the buckskin and get wool to make leggins and breeches. I figure they were no dummies.
:biglaugh:
I keep an old towel in my haversack (a gray canvas WWII surplus Swedish gas mask bag) so if I tuck a bunny or two in to carry it the blood doesn't soak the bag.
-
You guys all look great, Mudd- I gotta ask is that kilt drafty or what You might get buy until mid october with that here in Ohio after that I think it would be to cold. You all look great and you have great spirit.
-
dressed for success!!!
-
Mudd that outfit is pretty cool, but I wouldn't wear it in the Appalachian mountains on a canoe trip.Wannabe you may get away with yours, as long as you keep the knees covered up. :goldtooth:
-
I have a pair of olive drab wool WWII pants that I wear when it is really cold. As for darkening the bag, that will happen, plus with use over the summer it will tone down considerably.
My next item up for thought is some kind of mountain man hat. During the warmer early season, I dress a little more lightly. :)
-
hey bro how about a toque? its a heavy knit, wool hat that looks like a deflated football untill you stuff one end in to the other, most common were the red. i have a couple nice HEAVY ones, just say the word iffin ya want one!
-
i like the "old ways" too.

Ken, before I am to old to hunt you and I will see a hunt together! To bad we live on opposite coasts!
Great looking capote! I want one in a green color.
-
I happen to have a hat fetish, so if you were offering one up to me, I accept.
If it wasn't me you were speaking to then all I can say... sorry!..lol
I'm not bashful enough not to ask!!
God bless,Mudd
-
Wannabe1, you could easily dye your haversack "as is" and without damage by throwing some black walnut hulls into a gallon of water and let it sit for a few days before tossing the haversack in. A little bit of heat to the natural "dye" and occasional stirring will produce a nicely browned color that is "period correct". Similarly, staghorn sumac berries and a few rusty nails produce a nice bark gray color.
-
hey Bro i love yer snow shoes they are awesome
-
Mudd let me look around i only have 2 toque's and i'm sending one to Wannbe. i do however have a PILE of hunting hats and wool caps i'm sure i can find ya something!

Seriously I'm digging the capote - cool stuff!

i swear we must have been seperated at birth bro AWESOME frock and cold steel rifelmans hawk!
-
Thanks Ken. I had the frock made a couple of years ago. The plains quiver is from our own Jeremy here on the site. It is made of elk leather and is one of the softest quivers I've ever used.

All good ... now get out there and get some meat !

I'm on hold for the meat gathering right now. Well, at least 'til spring turkey if I get the time to go.

Trad to the bone... Love it.

Ken don't sweat it but I would love to see a picture of one of those....toques.
Thank you!

LOL!!! what he said!!
-
Ken you are one Big Dude! I love the outfit and you look like you just walked off the set of Grizzly Adams in that pic. You make that big ol dead snag behind ya look tiny!
Mudd- Thanks for the pics, it takes real strong character to stroll around in that attire and most importantly a guy who is definitely secure in his manhood. :saywhat:
I thought I could hear bag pipes in the background somewhere when I saw your pic of you in a kilt.
Don't you have a clan emblem or seal on your outfit anywhere? I didn't see one.
-
Wannabe1,
I hope that you didn't take my joke, the wrong way... I really like that type of clothes and even wore a buckskin fringed coat to my daughter's and my son's weddings.
-
A real Scotsman does not wear underpants under their kilt'?'. How does one tune bagpipes? A man purse for every purpose? I finally convinced my wife to carry a billfold for hunting and canoe trips and now this. While I don't mind the bags and the frocks, the camo pants just do not go with them. The ensemble needs go all the way to the ground or it makes no fashion sense.
-
All I wear under me kilt is me shoes..lol
Can't play a lick on the bag pipe but can stretch a cat till he yowls like one!...lol j/k
God bless,Mudd
-
Well be sure and cross your legs when you sit down Mudd! :saywhat:
I know.....this could go on and on.....but I couldn't resist the tempation to take a jab at ya!
Your a great guy Mudd, I hope you know I'm just picking at ya.
-
Not a problem at all Semo...lol I got some tough ole skin..lol
Besides if I can dish it, I will take it as well.
God bless,Mudd
-
I would not wear a kilt around here in the spring time. I am already a tick magnet, hate to think where they would end up if i couldn't tuck my pants inside socks.
-
Wannabe,
I wore an identical white fringe frock to the one your wearing on page 4 when I got married! Only difference was I wore white colonial button up period trousers with fringe around the knees.
We had a mountain rendezvous style wedding, and it took place at Fort Christmas in Christmas Florida. A reproduction of the original stockade style fort from the Seminole Indian Wars. And it was my Brides idea! Most of the guests dressed in period attire. Even had buckskins and some carried muzzle loaders.
After the ceremony the reception was BBQ Venison(2 whole Deer), smoked chicken(130lbs), swamp cabbage, baked beans, cake, champagne, beer and Blue Grass music.
The county that operates the Fort even let us have a little archery competition during the reception! But they wouldn't allow a black powder turkey shoot.
You fellows would have fit right in.

Harold, that sounds like it was a grand ole time! I would love to attend something like that. One day, I'm going to attend me a rendezvous.
Ken Taylor: No problem my friend. I never took it as anything serious. All is well!
-
This is great gang. I always like seeing the traditional side, I'm working on getting my own get up together. Can't wait to get it all.

Nice!

Mudd your form is improving!!!
-
Ya know Mudd, if you got enough people wearing one of those hats, you could have an "Archers Society of the Green Hats!" :D
-
Mudd,
Where did you get the hat pattern?
-
I bought a hat somewhere and used it to cut out a pattern.
They aren't hard to cut out and either glue together or sew together.
I can cut you out a paper pattern that you can transfer over to cardboard.
Just send me a large manila "S.A.S.'ed" envelope.
God bless,Mudd
-
Hey Mudd - another question for you. What is the bow sock/skin material on the lovely lady's bow in your hat image?
Wherejageddit?
-
Those are limb skinz from Alaska bow hunting supply.
I have another pair and a half..lol (yeppers I lost one half of a set.)
I'd be happy to send you one of these sets so you can try them out to see if you like them.
You just slide them on like putting socks on a rooster..lol
God bless,Mudd
-
Get some mud and dirt on that new stuff!♠
-
Great pics from everyone. Glad to know that I'm not alone when I "dress for success"!! :clapper:
-
Round his waist his belt of wampum,
Proof positive that Longfellow was unacquainted with either the habits of deer or the properties of wampum. :D

52yrs WOW!!! Congrats to both of you :notworthy: lucky gal to have arrows named after her.Ya I just figured that part out. :D
-
Ron, that is awesome to say the least! Young folks today could learn a thing or two from you and your wife. Thank you for sharing your pics.
I was looking into some buckskins yesterday and man were they expensive! :scared: Someday maybe...

If you save your own hides and have them tanned then do your own work, it can be done fairly reasonable. I had a girl friend back in the early 90's that is Native American and had all of my deer hides tanned for her out in Sherwood, OR. Her mother used to brain tan hides, but it took a long time and was a nasty job.
The tanning was cheap back then, but I think it has increased dramatically.
-
Paul, I've gotta get a deer to save my own hide!
-
My old buckskins, pants and shirt are still in very good condition. I haven't worn them in awhile....well because they seem to be a bit tight.. :o I haven't sold them because I'm hoping someday to be able to fit into them again...
-
Ron, here in Oregon where it rains a lot, what would be a good treatment to keep the life expectancy longer?
-
Anyone can do their own brain tanning. It's not mentally challenging but sure is labor intensive.
If I can do it then I am positive that anybody can.
Go for it!!!
God bless, Mudd
PS: Never use porch and deck stain to color your leather....lol Don't ask!!!!...lol
-
Hey Mudd, how many deer do you figure would have to die to cover your frame?....
:biglaugh:
-
Great pics Ron, I could answer that question you just threw at Mudd except I would substitute myself in the equation.
I believe I would be better off just going with an elk hide for myself and I may have enough left over for a pair of moccassins or a haversack?
If I don't back away from the ice cream and peach cobbler I may not have enough left for a knife sheath! :goldtooth:
-
I think if they were large deer I could do it today with 8-10.
About the same for a small tipi...lol
God bless,Mudd
-
I think I would like a set made out of elk hide. The quiver in my second picture is one made of elk by Jeremy and it is extremely soft.
My question again is, what would be a good way to treat the garment if it is to be worn in a wet environment?
-
Elk is ok for a jacket but is too heavy for shirt and pants... stick with deer skin and do not treat it with anything. When it rains leave your skins at home.
Here's my first set of skins that I made myself. I wore them for many years rendezvousing. The black on the pants is from grease from many cooking fires over the years. They're hanging on the wall of my shop now.
-
Thanks for the heads up on the Elk Ron. Deer it is then. Those look to be well used skins you have there. Bet they could tell many a story.
-
I like wool and linen a lot better than wearing skins, although I would like a nice pair of braintan leggings some day.

Were wool pants a regular of Mountain men? I have an old wool blanket that I was thinking of turning into some wool pants but, want them to be period correct. If this was something that they wore, then I'll do it.
I really like that shirt!
-
I'm not sure about "mountain men" - the time period I'm interested in is a little earlier (1760's & 1770's) - but the white woodsmen did adopt some of the native Indian dress. You can't see it but I'm wearing black wool leggings over linen knee breeches in the photo. Leggings would have been worn with breech clouts (loin cloths) as well and held up by tying the tops to the belt that held the clout. A garter was also tied below the knee to keep the leggings in place. (My garters are smoked braintan with white quillwork.)
If you want to be "period correct", try to narrow down as small a date range as possible as well as a specific geographic location.
There are generally two types of leggings... side seam and center seam (Side seam were more common in the east.) - and wool was very commonly used for them. Leggings are real easy to make... they go from mid-thigh to the ankle...
Leggings (http://www.nativetech.org/seminole/leggings/index.php)
-
By the way, the shirt was made from the typical 18th century shirt pattern but from a coat-weight twill wool and a size larger than my regular shirt. (It's usually called a frock or a hunting shirt.)
Here's some info on an 18th century shirt: Shirt (http://www.marquise.de/en/1700/howto/maenner/18hemd.shtml)
Thanks!
-
Gene, very much appreciate the info and the links! Good stuff right there.

Hey Mudd! The toque is a knit cap... most people think of the Machault cap when they think of a toque...
This is a "rolled toque"...
I wear a "Monmouth cap"...
I had my Monmouth cap knit EXTRA large so that I could "full" it or "felt" it (wash & agitate in hot water and put it in the dryer) - it shrinks it down to size and makes it very dense and warm... practically a helmet!
More good info: Historical Knit Caps (Mara Riley) (http://www.marariley.net/knitting/caps.htm)

Thank you Gene!!
I love the look of your hat, shoot I love you whole outfit.
