:deadhorse: I poly like Under Armour it's light and warm I buy different brands, I wear mitchem no scent or arm-n-hammer antiperspirant, and still the stuff smells. Don't know what else I can do?? Anyone
I sweat something fiercely stinky in synthetic fibers so I know your dilemma. The only antiperspirant that works for me is Lavilin. Expensive but worth EVERY penny.
You can get it online or at markets worth their salt. Oh, and you only use it like once a week, so you don't have to keep it on-hand for long trips.
Trade it for wool.
I might just try the wool Tree Rat!!
NCH do you have any web sites you could post?

 I have um.....tested my wool longjohns by not taking them off and not taking a shower for a couple of days while camping/hunting.They(longjohns) still didn't have an odor.
I can wear polypros for two hours and I smell like a locker room.

If you want to stay with synthetic base layers try some with silver made into it. I have been using this kind of baselayer for several years now and it does not smell when you sweat. The silver stops bacteria that causes BO from forming when you sweat. A few brands are Medalist, Redhead, and XGO. XGO is my favorite but it is harder to find. It is made in the USA so that is a plus!

I'm glad it works for someone because I dumped a lot of money on "silver" under clothes that did nothing for me at all...
Thanks NCH!! Al this is the kind I am having the most trouble with I have a shirt on now it's the x system from Bass pro. I have also tried the Gander mountain house scentcore. Tried Patagonia and some really cheap stuff from Wally
I am a big sweater. Medalist base layers with the silver in it has worked the best for odor control, in my case.
Put 4 marines wearing poly-pro longjohns and nomax crew suits under kevlar vests inside an armored vehicle for a week with no showers and you get a stench from the lower rings of hades !!!!! I will NEVER wear poly-pro of any kind again, the smell never realy goes away after washing and comes back quick ....wool all the way for me.
What kind of wool are you all wearing?
the poly-pro or synthetics amplify your scent,I tried everything and gave up i wear wool by woolpower or ll bean. you can sweat in them for days and just hang them for a while and no smell,no clammy, stickey feeling when you sweat either.I used to do a tent camp for deer lasting 7 to 10 days and alternate wool underwear between two sets the whole time.wear one and air the other.
Unscented baby wipes go along way when one wants to clean up under adverse conditions.
Silver lined has worked for me, so has unscented Arm & Hammer. I like wool very much but it does help to have some fleece under it.
On the other hand, Merino wool is also a very good as a base layer.
Merino wool or silk and my wife will put up with me, synthetic and I can't stand me.
Smartwool and Ibex use a very fine grade of merino wool. (smaller fibers) Almost no itch or stink.
Ulfrotte/Woolpower or Minus 33 wool here. Both are soft and warm.
I have been noticing more garments made with Smartwool lately, good stuff !
Be clean before putting them on and don't use ANY deodorant. Clean with All Free & Clear (unscented) laundry detergent or similar.
Merino wool all the way! I really like Icebreaker brand. If you check the outdoors camping/running sites you can pick up the Merino on year end closeout sometimes. I would never pay full-price for it, but $30 or so is well worth it. Get the finer (thinner) grade Merino because it is very warm and if you get the thicker stuff it won't dry out very quickly if you do get it wet.
I ran quite a bit last winter training for an ultra-marathon and used my finest grade Icebreaker zip top almost exclusively. I can wear just that top down to about 20 degrees windchill and be perfectly comfortable (while running), plus I could wear it several times before I could really start to smell anything.
Just make sure you hand wash or use a gentle cycle to wash, and then just let it hang dry so it doesn't shrink (same with synthetics actually).
I like the quick dry properties of some of the synthetics, but Merino wins hands down overall for me!
You use to be able to get this crystal looking thing called the"Rock" deodorant for hunters for deodorent that one of my ol hunting partners use to swear buy .He claimed the regular primos or scent shield stuff I used lit him up.I still have one and it looks like a clear rock that you moisten and rub with. But now,I dont see any one selling it anymore .Someone said that it is just aluminum chlorate I think and that you can get it at some of your better health food stores. As for the polyprop, when I use to be a novice mountaineer, after a while you would get it stenched up and then it just was done. And Ive never gotten into the underarmour stuff, cause I couldnt bring myself to pay what they get for it.The merino wool is the bomb and the peices that I have,Ive gotten used.Just hand wash with scent free, hang dry and wear and it wont smell up for quiet a while.Wool will still keep you warm when it is wet too.
Just switched to Merino wool midweight from Smartwool been in it two days now and it barely smells like anything. Comfy too.
Yup, quit wearing synthetics, there is NO advantage over wool and silk. The merino wools are softer, warmer or as warm, feel dryer, and insulate when wet. What to guides in the mountains wear...not synthetics!
Wool has natural antibacterial activity, no silver necessary. Look to Wool Power, Smart wool, etc.
Synthetics have their place, but using primarily wool and silk you should have less problems. Like you I sweat a lot and stink most of the time...usually from smelly hockey equipment and I use a few specific things now. I use the Hunter's soap from 3 rivers, it is a natural oil soap, the oils fight bacteria and although it is refreshing smelling when you shower (nice odor), it is gone when rinsed and you don't get the weird clammy sweat that the scent killer type soaps leave you with later on. Also I use a scent killer type shampoo with conditioner without the antibacterial agent triclosan that is commonly found in some soaps. It is a known carcinogen and many hunting type products have it in them. I get a really strange feeling on my skin when I use these products, kind of a clammy, smelly sweat...
For deodorant I use just unscented speed stick, it doesn't clump and fall off like the hunter brands, although I only use it during hunting season because again, the aluminum is known to cause alzheimer's disease.
With these few products, I know my scent volume is lowered, and I will wear the same undergarments without washing for several days on deer stands...and I put up and take down stands virtually every sit...unheard of with the hunting market products on every shelf. I notice a huge differene with my nose alone.
Like NCH, I think Lavilin is the BEST defense out there. It has no aluminum for those that are concerned with the Alzheimer's link possibility. I have used it for 10 years, now, and can often make it two weeks or more before I need to reapply. To a human nose, I smell like... NOTHING!
Paul Brunner introduced this product to the hunting market as "Pit Stop" back when he had the Screamin' Eagle catalog, and it is very good stuff.
That said, I have a couple merino tops I've used for years. Was never willing to spend the $$$ on high-end polys that didn't feel or look right to me.
Good luck figuring it all out!

There's your answer....merino thermals is all I use for that reason and the fact that its warmer, and warmer if you sweat getting to your stand.
Just can't beat Mother Nature.
I wear a thin cotton t underneath. I dont care for the poly feel next to my skin and they do get to stinkin. This has worked for me.

Thank every one for your suggestions I just ordered a Minus 33 mid weight shirt I'll let you know how it works out in a couple of weeks. Thanks again :campfire:
Wool is good stuff and doesn't smell... the only three downsides are 1) some people's skin reacts negatively to wool 2) the merino wool garments are way more expensive than equivalent poly garments 3) the merino wool garments wear out much faster than high quality poly garments.
I now save my wool for hunting because I shred it too fast if I wear it all the time.
Tracks,
Have to disagree with ya about wool wearing out. We have been wearing and washing our Ullfrotte now for 4 years and it looks new. Can't say that about our old military poly pro ! It pills up and shrinks like you would not believe after one year of washing and drying. I think if we washed it only it would do better, dryer is what wears it out. Skin side goes from nice soft and comfy to a totally different texture. Wool only for me now that I have seen the light. Wool...... God's miracle fiber !
