When I first joined Trad Gang 5yrs ago, I was really excited to pursue getting my first deer/trad harvest. Somehow I got caught up in the buying and trading of all the different trad archery equipment this sport has to offer and realized that my focus had shifted. I was more into the equipment than the hunting!
Don't get me wrong, I still hunted every year and was having lots of fun but, I think I need to switch my focus back in order to loose the Wannabe1 status. This year I will no longer be buying and trading, only selling a few items I no longer need! Instead, I will be practicing and studying my foe, the Blacktail deer. :D
My equipment will be one of two Howard Hill longbows of the same specs. I will practice with both, one primary and one backup. A back quiver and well tuned arrows tipped with 2 blade BH. I will spend as many hours as allowable (by the boss) scouting the area I plan to hunt to better know my quarry. This is my New Year resolution. Wish me luck! :archer:
Sounds like a good plan and a nice re-focus.
Best of luck!
Kris
Easy to get caught up in the fun of traditional archery and lose focus on traditional bowhunting. I think you are wise though to become proficient with one bow and learning all you can about the quary. Good Luck!
You're in a pretty sweet area for CBT's, tried it three times and enjoyed the challenge.
Good on you. All the best. Good choice with the bows, too.
Good luck,I hope your successful.
Great post TW! I can learn from this also.
Let's get back to it!!
Yep, Real easy to get caught up in all the fun. I have already gone back to the simple D bows and Doug fir arrows with a back quiver and loving every minute of it.
Good luck bud and have some fun!! :D
Tracy
Enjoy the journey...........
I TOO UNDERSTAND .........
That's a great goal and I'll be rooting for you TW! :wavey:
If there's anything that I can do to help you keep that goal just let me know and if it's within my power I'll do it!
Happy New Year!!
God bless,Mudd
Sounds like a plan !
Good on you. I have said before traditional archery doesn't need anything that is described as "new, radical, improved, advanced" or that has been patented in the last 50 years. That's new stuff. Not traditional stuff.
Bow, string and arrow. Can't distill out pure hunting much more than that. Probably ought to wear some warm clothes, though.
It's a really honorable goal your trying to attain. And I wish you all the luck, it's never a good thing to lose your focus on the quarry even if it is to focus more on toys. Perhaps you could start by trying to block all trad equipment classifieds from your computer.(yeah, like that's really gonna happen)Or maybe a short stint with bowaholics anonymous.
Good Luck with your endeavor, and I hope you succeed!
Good luck on the Blacktail. Keep use posted on your progress....Phil
Now thats what Im talking about
Thanks everyone. To be honest, I was really burning out on trying to find that perfect setup. I am re-reading Howards Hunting the Hard Way and know I have really been missing what I was looking for. I think I've found it but, still have some learning to attain it. This site and all who are a part of it, have and will be a great help getting there.
a+...wish the boss would let me out...

Good Luck! Your journey starts..................... again! May u not get lost this time. GOD SPEED!
Identifying and taking steps to remove the barriers should enable you to more directly follow your true desires.
Would be interested in your sense of enhanced fulfillment later in the year.
Good luck, I have noticed some of the same now that I am up to 3 bows. I have all I need, i have to work on using them for my intended goal, putting meat in the frezzer.
It's a good reminder for me too. Thanks for posting!
Right On The Button TW! Just the other day I said to myself... "Self, try not to spend any hard earned cash on archery stuff this year." Maybe I should be happy with what I already own and USE IT!
Maybe... This year, maybe.
... mike ...
I too feel motivated to join with you in your quest but I need to finish out the stuff I have on the table and back burners before I can begin such an admirable quest.
I'm still rooting for you TW!!
God bless,Mudd
Sounds like a great New Years resolution. Good luck to you as you pursue it.
There is a fellow named "Dan" in the Grants Pass, OR area - he makes custom POR arrows from scratch -- yep starting with the tree. He is an expert BT hunter and very fine fellow. He used to run an archery shop "Wapati Archery".
The perfect setup is the setup that has been perfected, they seldom come straight off the shelf.

Appreciate all the encouragements! For those who will remember this post, be looking as I will periodically report on my progress as I wait for the next hunting season to arrive.
This is a very attainable goal for me as I have the desire and determination. The Lord will be my guide, Howard my inspiration and Trad Gang my support rally! :D
I thought I was done hunting but as it turns out, I think I just need a good change of scenery
I'm right there with you!!!
TW, I wish you luck! I personally don't have the money to have to many toy's, so it limit's my options. I have one bow and I've gotten very acquainted with it. I tend to spend most of my money on arrows these days. Jason
Yes we do lose focus on things and get caught up in the whatever. Good for you on recognizing it and redirecting your passion. Best to you.
Earl
Good plan,we all get caught up in it all from time to time. Find what works for you and stick with it.The old saying...."heed the man with only one rifle for he likely knows how to use it" can be said about archery too.Good luck!
Good luck T W !
I said the same thing this year ,I was trying to concentrate on a hunting bow ,And I have purchased and traded about 7 to 10 of them .
But no more ,I have found a person that has made me three fantastic bows 36# 43# and 47#
Chad Holm ,I use a 36# to get my form down 43# For target practice , And the 47# For hunting .
I just said to myself just two weeks ago ," yep this looks like hunting ,you pick a spot set by tree and wait for deer to come by ,Who was hunting who " !
Well now to have my own 40 acres ,I should be able to figure out the trails and the habits .
You know they start threads on elk hunting "How already are you "
Maybe we should start a thread on "Back to the basics and on target "
You could be the leader that focuses us !
Let's do it how about it a Terry !
Carl
good luck I hope you make it.
DeerSpotter: Appreciate the vote of confidence but, I don't think I could be the leader of anything 'til I've had my first harvest. Still got plenty learning to do. ;)
What we want and what we need are two different things.
Good luck, T.W.!!
You can change your member name from "wannabe 1" to something like, "I AM 1" :bigsmyl: -------------course you'd have to get a new member number, and start over, again..... :campfire:
Good luck!
That is a very admirable goal. I too have been getting too many toys and not focusing on the practicing and research that goes into be a better hunter. I think I have now found another new years resolution...focus on hunting...not buying more hunting stuff...thanks
