How many of you shed hunt? I have been looking into it but dont really know any "tricks of the trade."
What time of year should somebody go looking in ny?
Are there any spots to look for? bedding areas. trails, ect.
Thanks
Alex B
if you know where the deer traols and funnels are then you know where to go to look for sheds. but i was also told that if you have alot of squirrels and other rodents around the sheds wont be on the ground long. ruddy
feb- april is the best time that i have finding them! beding areas and a food source is where i find the most, but a well used trail turns a few up every year for me! good luck its real fun looking for them and some great trophies, and a good way to track what bucks you might not have seen or got pics of during the season!!
I'm not sure about NY, but here in IN we start looking around the first of Feb. We always look around fence crossings, brushy areas, bedding areas and about anywhere you find deer sign! Jason
throw corn in honey suckel or a viney area there racks will fall off when they go for the corn.check the area every3-5 days add corn as needed 50lbs in a 75 yrd area in other words bait abit heavey an then add corn as needed. good luck
i went shed hunting once. i actually found one side. a small 6 pointer. i went in march. i went to an area that was well traveled by deer and concentrated on the thickest, brushiest areas. i figured that if the antler was getting ready to fall off. maybe they would get a little help by getting hung up on the brush.

i have found only 2 antlers. 1 in july after i ran it over with the brush hog. the second was today walking through mmy niegbors field. it also was hit by a brush hog. ill be going here soon im waiting to get some pics of antlerless deer then go out and start looking.
March is a great time or April while scouting for turkeys. Putting miles on your boots finds some antlers.
Feeding & bedding areas are good. Trails where bucks jump fence crossings, creeks, and ditches.
They say if you find one antler, start working concentric circles out from that point (paying close attention to used trails) and you will often find the other one.
