Title: Now that hunting season is over, DIVERSIFY!! (four top recurve PICS.)
Post by: Straitshot on December 31, 2010, 03:22:00 PM
With the many bowmakers today I realise it would be impractical to have and be able to shoot one of every kind out there. I do believe, however, it would be a hoot if one could. I have often envied those who test bows and would really like to do it myself except for all the report writing that would be involved. I just plain enjoy shooting different bows. I enjoy stringing up several bows and taking turns shooting them. I like to see how quickly I can adapt from one to the other. Some require little adaptation while others considerably more. I find crossing over from longbow to recurve to be more difficult than going from recurve to recurve or longbow to longbow. I have dedicated most of my efforts over the years to the recurve but when given the opportunity I do enjoy a good longbow.

Today I spent a few hours shooting four of the best top rated recurve bows out there. I know there are others out there and believe me I would love to have some of them but common since and certainly finances dictate otherwise. Here are four groups shot at twenty yards, one bow right after the other, Black Widow first, then the Silvertip, then the Tall Tines, and finally the Blacktail. For me these four if tuned properly take little adapting from one to the other to shoot and get to group decently.

What varity of bows, if any, do you enjoy shooting?

Louis

I like doing the same thing. In fact, I'm shooting two of same combination you are shooting!

I shoot most of these recurves every day:
-Schafer Silvertip
-Tall Tines
-Rose Oak Super Wildcat
-Bear Takedown (Supreme A Riser with RO limbs)
-Strickland's Stick

I try to shoot each one the same although the SW has a more narrow shelf and I tend to cant it a tad to keep the arrow in place.

I shoot a 1-piece Blacktail occasionally but I've put my BW PSAIII in its case. I should get it out. On Monday, I'll rack the Supreme and in favor of A and B Mag Bear Takedowns.

I own one Longbow, a very nice bamboo-limbed one but I don't shoot it.

I shoot 6" cardboard squares or turkey head/neck silouettes trying to keep 5-shot groups on target. I always note where the 1st arrow of each group goes.

I actually just walked in from the range. Was shooting my 3 recurves:
-Robertson
-Tall Tines
-Dryad Orion

All felt good and shot well.

They are all 60" bows, BW is 49#@28", ST is 50#@28", TT is 50#@28", and BT is 50#@28".

Yes, the BT is a Snakebit.

Would really love to try some of the three piece take down longbows. Maybe in the future.

I've been shooting my 58" Stalker Surge, my 58" Zipper ZSR, and my 64" Longwlker longbow. Lately my 60" Zipper SXT has been resting. Great high quality bows that are fun to shoot and I feel comfortable with each of them.

What a quartet you have there!  Slip in a Morrsion, Robertson, Brackenbury and Wes Wallace and you would really have superstar line-up. I've always dreamed that if I ever won the lottery I would immeadiately start calling every bowyer I've ever heard of (and ones I haven't heard of)and order up their top of the line bow.

Burnsie,

You are correct in putting those four among the top and I can think of others like a Dale Dye, a Brandon Stahl, a Jack Kemph, and a slew of others. I sometimes hate to mention names because I know I leave some out. I used to trade every once in a while to get something I really wanted. Everything I have now I really like and want to keep so trading is no longer an option. Consequently having any, other than the ones I currently have, is not very likely at present. I still like to look though.
