Title: Maps and GPS's
Post by: lpcjon2 on December 31, 2010, 01:48:00 PM
Does TG have a forum for GPS maps downloading or swapping? If not is there any interest in making one. If your going to hunt an area thats out of state it could be helpful. Not all GPS's have small scale maps loaded into them.Just a thought.

I would also recommend learning how to use a compass too. I use it along with my GPS and I know my compass will never run out of batteries. IMO both tools have a place in the woods.

I'm brushing up on my land nav skills also.

Here is a good primer:   http://www.pursuithunting.com/2008/10/navigation-getting-from-here-to-there.html

I've also been working with google earth and purchased a really good compass. Patrick smith of Kifaru also has great info on the topic. PM me and I can provide more links and discuss further.

The relationship between the compass and GPS is like the slide rule and the calculator. Ummm...............where did I put that slide rule?

Having a compass and a GPS in the wilderness areas are an absolute must IMO.  There will be areas that are just too dense for the GPS to get a decent signal.  Also a GPS does require batteries that can be affected by the cold and/or die.  A GPS is usually more convenient to use etc.

compass and map for... GPS's are a great tool, but they can at times not work due to batteries, dropping them on a rock or in the water and in deep cover like the big woods.

If My compass brakes I can still use the needle and some water (liquid) and a leaf so it can float on and still point the way..

LOVE my GPS but was fortunate enough to have a Dad that was well schooled in map and compass, and taught me alot.
Having map and compass saved my behind this yr, and a SAR team some time and effort! GPS just refused to grab satellites. I usually have no problem getting through trees but this one swamp is like a Bermuda Triangle.

Delorme has a GPs I am looking at getting for my Bday. They have a site you can get maps off of/download?
