I already filled my buck tags this year (allowed 2 in my state)and was very greatful. Last week, I got back in the stand to take a doe and a 170 inch buck presents a great shot. I was so tempted. A minute after he passed, a nice antlerless deer walked by and gave me a shot. Food on the table!!
your a good man for that.
Integrity is doing the right thing even when no one is watching.
look on the bright side, if hes 170 now, imagine one more year on him!
Seems like you were rewarded fir making the right decision. Good for you!
Keeping the Faith!

God bless,Mudd
A 170 incher in Delaware?? Things sure have changed since I grew up in the Hockessin area. Next time you see him can you bump up into PA for me!
Well done. It is tough.

I tell all the guys I hunt with the same thing: If you think you are the only one looking over the barrel of that gun or down the shaft of that arrow thats when you need to be on your best behavior.
I love to hear stories of guys and gals who do it right when they know no one else is looking over their shoulder. I wish there were a tall shiny trophy for every time it happened.
You did the only thing you could do. Even if it was a new world record if you shot it illeagly you are nothing more than a poacher. In the future you may want to keep one of those buck tags in your pocket. But on the other hand it's tough to eat a unfilled buck tag when you could have filled it. I know I have been in both spots !
I hate when that happens lol! I killed a spike my first year bowhunting 3rd day of the season and had a 160" pearl white 10 point walk by mere yards TWICE during late season. sniff. He sure was purdy! I just watched him. Never did see him again. It is what it is lol.
Frustrating yes, tempting no.
ill give you the third attaboy.
you would get the attaboy award of 2010 , but you forgot to submit pictures in triplicate form.

Good Job,I hope to see your picture here next year with him as a booker.
A couple of years ago I shot a buck early in the season. Like you I was doe hunting and a 160" 8 point buck walked by me at 8 yards. I just looked and admired him. About a week later my son in law got a shot at him.
You did the right thing. And, you have some information on a buck that will be even bigger next year!
It was a 170 until you get a tape on it!
What Joe A. said.
Good for you.
Good man. My brother and I used to teach hunter education and all my kids, neices and nephews took the class from us. This year one of my nephews had a nice 8 point at 12 yards broadside but it was on the wrong side of the fence (where he did not have permission to hunt). He said that he was not even tempted to shoot because he was taught to do things the right way. I have always been proud of my family, but it is especially nice when they do the right thing when no one is around.
Nobody ever said doing the right thing was easy! Great choice.
What Burnsie said!
Don't surprise me any that you passed on that buck. It seems all the good guys are on this site.
Buck tags filled for the year - not sure an attaboy is in order for not poaching another one.
Yes the temptation must have been great.
Your realization that this was a temptation and your standing by your integrity makes you a hunter that I would wish to share camp.
Hopefully, you were able to take in this majestic experience.
